I just bought a 1962 scout 800. I am not sure what kind of axels are under it and was wondering what would come stock. I am going to Moab and was told to weld the spider gears together or put a spool in the rear end. Is this a good idea?

Welcome newbie:flipoff2:
What ya got there is a scout 80 and the axles suck donkey balls. If your new to Scouts and don’t have much tools or fab skills the BB might suit you a little better….. Seriously

The 4:27 or 4:88 gears are nice, the power loc is O.K. The rest of the axle is too weak for anything over 31 inch tires and very much abuse. The front springs tend to break, and there isn't much flex to them. The rear drive shaft has too small of u-joints and will shatter them with any real torc. With the drag link in the center of the tie rod if you do a soa there are some real serious steering problems. You will like the removeable doors, and fold down windsheild but the best thing to do is remove the entire running gear and start over with heavier components. If not you just going to be stuck in the way of everyone else and get drove over. :D

I was out in salt lake visiting and looked at the scout hes talking about. We were thinking of doing a spring over on it and putting on some 33s on If I could make it out to Salt lake again.
I believe that it has had the drivetrain swapped out but unsure.
Could you guys help him out in determining what axles and tranny,T-case and motor he has?
It is a six cylinder motor I believe.
How can he tell ifthey are stock axles? Any Pics?>
The things runs awesome and is in nice shape.
He wants to run mild trails in salt lake area and also hit moab.
Would it be a waste of his cash to put a limited slip in the stock axles.
If he lived up where I live I could do an axle swap for him however he lives in Salt lake and I in South Dakota. He does not have access to a welder at this time.
He does not know any wheelers in Salt lake. Hes new to wheelin but wants to get into it after wheelin with me in South Dakota.
Any Salt Lake Wheelers feel free to let yourself be known to him .
Thanks for the Info.

Hey Flex,
Not trying to be an a-hole here but the Binder (http://www.binderbulletin.org) is the best place to start the information gathering process. I was unaware 800's were offered in 62 don't knowmuch about them. The six may be an AMC 232 if it's a straight six.
The Binder will help you ID the year and componets of the Scout. Once that is done come here and we'll set you in the right direction
Baahahehwwahawhaw

If your too embarassed to go to the BinderBulliton the check out this site. Tom's FAQ (www.tmcom.com/~tsm1/scout/faq/index.html) That probably is a 232 six someone transplanted into the scout. I have a 232 bellhousing and it would bolt to the t90 three speed in the scout 80's
