well on my way down to austin tonight I blew my front driveshaft. So I guess I can no longer say that I don't know anyone that has blown a DII front driveshaft. I'll attach some pics so you can see the carnage. Luckily it blew the rear uj so it didn't go through my oil pan although it did make a nice dent in the passenger side wheel well and managed to bust my exhaust in half. So all and all a productive night. Have to say thanks to the man that loaned me a 9/16th and a cresent wrench in Temple, Tx. Always something.

Sheeet!! bad news! :(

was this shaft on a disco or a defender? what do you think the reason was that it broke? too much an angle?

at least now you can change that front output seal that's leaking ;)

That's not leakage! That's the option RPS System! (rover positioning system)

yeah I really needed to change that seal been leaking for about 5 months just kept checking the transfercase for fluid. I am not sure why it broke it might have had something to do with running 5" of lift for about 6 months right when I put the shaft on and then changing back to 3" and not changing the uj. It was on a defender hence the title of the thread

It's things like this that make me wonder about u-joints that have no grease fittings to lube them up. It ticked me off that one from GBR I put on a friend/customers D90 didn't have any grease fittings on the front CV either. This may be ok in the desert but around here the entire driveshaft gets submerged in water frequently.

Hmm.

The replacement shaft I just got from Bill at GBR has grease fittings all over the place. UJ, DC and splines.

And others i've gotten from there had them too. A rear one was bought at the same time as the aforementioned front and it had the full compliment of grease fittings. I'm still making sense of it myself. I've heard that if they have fittings people grease them too much and blow out the seals making them leak more but I thnk I'd rather take my chances.

Regarding DII front drive shafts, I just took my wifes DII in to the Charlotte dealership to have some warranty work done. The DS was vibrating at highway speeds, so I told them to replace it as I didn't believe that it could be lubed. The service guy told me that it could and I called him on it. He paged the tech, who came out, and after pondering the question for a moment, said yes...it takes a special tool. Good thing I didn't ask him if I could see the "special tool".

yeah.... special tools consist of:

drill
tap and die set
grease nipple (AKA zerk fitting?/joint?)

they (the dealers) really do think that 'us' the customers are a bunch of wankers don't they?
