: Does this board let new members post?

My wheeler friends first told me about this site. They told me that some people (newbies) cannot post here even if they have a lot of knowlege in wheeling. They do not post often in the Internet but sometimes they do because they have a lot of knowledge. But they told me not to post here because I would regret it. How come?

Hey Newbie! :)

You're allowed to post here, but expect to have most of the regular posters be quite critical of what you post unless you have proof to back up what you're saying and have built up a reputation for knowing what you're talking about.

Notice I'm still a Newbie on here, but I'm by no means new to Suzuki's or to the off-road mailing lists and bulletin boards. I've been on the public forums since 1994 and have made literally thousands of posts on all the different forums, but I choose to mainly just keep quiet here and listen to what others have to say.

This board is a great source of info, as long as you keep in mind that most of the :flipoff2:'s aren't to be taken seriously. If you have some good info to contribute, there are bound to be dozens of people who would appreciate any posts you make!

Some of my wheeling friends know a lot about wheeling and building and fixing stuff. But for someone like me, I like to ask questions on what to do. One of my friends who is like me asked a question here on this board and he got flamed for asking a question that was tech related. He got scared so does not post here and told me not to either. My friend told me that this board has a reputation of only having the regular members post. They do not like new comers. They like to keep the board with a very small number of people posting. The newbies who ask tech questions get scared away. I do not think keeping this board small is benifitcial. You look at off-road.com. The Suzuki board is going to be the second largest board soon when it catches up to the Toyota board. I think the reason why that board is growing because that board has a better reputation. :(

First off, welcome to the board. :D Second, regrets are for :rainbow:. Third, as I have found out, use the search button located in the upper right corner. Try different word combinations to find the info you are looking for. If you can't find it there, then post your question. Yea, I'm sure somebody might pick on you, but it just someone having fun. This is about the only "serious" smile, :flipoff: so if you get that one, someone is probably pissed. Also, if you have a specific question you want to ask someone, use the PM button located on their post, this is just like sending a personal e-mail. Other than that, this is by far the most "informational" BBS board I have found. Good luck and :flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2:

All newbies get the :flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2: ..but its just a joke. The newbies that get truly flamed ask ridiculous questions worthy of Topica....i.e., What valve stem caps are best for mud? The newbies with good questions and tech generally survive unless they are too thin kinned.

We were all newbies once, the hazing process just gets rid of the riff-raff.

The main difference between the two boards is one is hard core and the other is not. If you are new to offroading , and want to know how to change a thermostate or head gasket, then ORC is the place to be. If you want to see how a 1/4 eliptic works over a coiled 3 link stick around.

spend the next month just lurking on the board. See who the players are. See who can be taken serious, and who you can take with a grain of salt.

The search button works great. Don't ask questions generally that you can find in the search first, or you will be told. Have thick skin when posting, because you will get some smart ass comments back. They are meant mostly as a joke, and should be laughed at. Don't take anything seriously. If you have some good tech, post it. If you have some awesome pics, post them. Generally specific questions are better than " which tire is better" type questions.

Some people tend to go overboard with the :flipoff2: but it there way of dealing with POR. Right MM :flipoff2:

You won't get flamed if you do a search first to see if your question has already been asked. Many of us are here because we got tired of reading the same old stuff on the other large boards. I'd bet 75% of the posts on the other boards are chit-chat. I just popped over to ORC, top post is talking about some guys 4 year old, next one paypal, next one how to put a caption picture in your post, I closed the window in disgust after that

Excellent advise from a smart newbie! Just do you due dilligence first searching. If you are feeling lazy and want to post a really basic question like" what size tires fit with X lift" post it on ORC.

If you want to post chit chat to get over 100 post and loose your newbie status, do it in chit-chat section...or the jeep section. :D

It's already been said, but just to reinforce this concept a little bit I will repeat it. USE THE SEARCH BUTTON before you post any questions. ANd don't be a cocky asshole who thinks he knows everything trying to make a name for yourself. There are lot's of pricks on this board, but get use to it cause it's part of life and it's a small thing to put up with if ya wanna use this board.

ORC is the biggest discrace to wheeling! I feel bad for that board and some of the people on it, cause a large majority of them are the pansie asses who left this board cause someone gave em a little bit of shit when they ask how to change their windshield wipers or how to instal a baby seat in the back of their sammi's.

Bottom line-Use search button, get use to criticism, get a red star so you can back up your shit and keep this board going and start searching cause you won't regret it!

WELCOME

Sounds like he is a pussy:flipoff2: this is the best hardcore tech bb on the net, and small? 330,000 people visted in may and 7 million page fits, it you don't want to know hardcore answers, stay on ORC, nothing wrong with that, this bb just doesn't cater to that low tech stuff, like fitting dinky tires and chit chat. we have a chit chat section, if only the assholes on this bb would use it instead of posting in the tech sections:rolleyes: that is done mostly in the toy section and general, not in here.

My advice
1. Buy an angle grinder, sawzall, and a BFH.
2. Learn to use them freely!!

and by the way, Welcome :flipoff2:

zukiman
07-05-2002, 12:19 PM
You can think of it like this: The ORC board is for discussing Suzuki stuff. The Pirate board is for discussing custom stuff done to vehicles that originally came out of a Suzuki factory but which tend to not be much of a Suzuki anymore, if at all. That's why the Sawzall, angle grinder, and BFH are the preferred tools of choice to these board members. :)

Now, if that makes the ORC board members disgraceful to the 4-wheeling community, then I'm curious to find out how certain Holier-Than-Thou types got to where they are today by bypassing the newbie stage themselves.

Anyways, an ugly, beat-up, hodge-podged, custom, and complex 1-off Suzuk-based creation can rarely do much better on the trail than a well-built Samurai. :flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2:

But to each his own. Everyone's vehicle is unique, built to suit their own particular needs. If a family only needs a reliable off-road vehicle to take them through the Rubicon or out into the desert, they have little need for a vehicular extension of their penis size. Not everyone looks at dents and scrapes as a sign of the driver's coolness factor. Rather, it may look to them like a sign of poor driving abilities or bad judgement.

Opinions are like a$$holes; everyone's got one, and they usually stink. If you don't like what I've said, you may ignore it. That's what :usa: is for.

Did he just say I had a Small Dick?:flipoff2:

They are simply two different style Boards.
Pirates guys don't wanna hear how to fix a sloppy shifter.
I think we all started there, but grew out of it. But not in the scence that we are better, just tired of hearing the same thing over and over. Some people are happy to run 31's and use their trucks as daily drivers. Pirate guys are hard core wheelers, that spend more time picking a line than oil to use. Its not about snubbing anyone. You have to read all the posts with a grain of salt, and take most all , unless someone flips you the:flipoff: as a joke.

zukiman
07-05-2002, 01:21 PM
I agree with you, John. But the reason why is because you don't present newbies with a Holier-Than-Thou attitude. You've never come across as being an a$$hole. You don't make newbies feel bad; you're someone they look up to. You're a nice guy, and your truck kicks ass. It certainly doesn't seem like your truck is in any way compensation for any particular shortcoming. :p

It's other people on this board that at times come across as quite a bit less than friendly. Not to say that they aren't nice people or skilled fabricators or great drivers. Rather, they present an attitude that generally speaking, is not as friendly as the generally welcoming and encouraging ORC board members' attitudes.

I'm not trying to change anyone or anything about this board. It worked great before I got here, has continued to work great during the time I've been here, and if I ever chose to leave it wouldn't change. It just caters to a different type of person, which is why I've tended to be much more of a lurker here than on the other forums, on which I have been very active since 1994.

The ORC board is great. In the past month or so that I've been here I have not seen any questions answered here that have not been answered on ORC. The ORC board IS more chit chat then here. People are def. develop more friendships their then here. I go to both now and I have not really been flamed but I don't post dumb @ss questions like does my samurai have a divorced x-fer or something like that. So if you wanna just post tech ?'s then come here, if you wanna post some tech ?'s and meet other zuker's then post there. Also it seems to be much easier to find used parts and such over on ORC, and people are much easier on you for posting dumb ?'s if their is such a thing.

This is an odd statement. I've seen some hideous attempts at rig building on other sites (hopefully their first try), nearly everything I have seen posted here is top notch (I am talking total rig build- ups). Also with the evolving nature of this sport the word trail can no longer cover every route. Stuff like Asylum is a true test of a driver and his rig and you can't tell me with a straight face a mildy built Samurai would manage that route. Since I sort of catalog routes on my site I have struggled with how to compare them so others have an idea of what their rig can handle without getting in too deep. I am seeing a bigger and bigger gap between the trails a mildly built rig can run and the hardcore routes where you need to seriously start considering clearance (both ground and body), tire compound, weight distribution and suspension performance to run. Guys aren't removing all their sheet metal down here just to look cool, there's a reason rigs are evolving onto two separate paths (rock buggy vs full bodied) and it's directly related to the difficulty levels of the routes we are starting to run. So I guess what I am trying to say is the days where one rig can run the entire spectrum of routes is gone. Build for one or the other or shoot for the middle (and try not to knock the guys who are building for a different level).
