i know they're right at 37" or close, but can they be moved inward or are is the one side part of the pumpkin like most other fullwidths? i have never seen a picture and am looking at purchasing one for decent price but NEED to have it at 31.5" center hole to center hole. possible???
thanks-russel
You can grind off anything you want on just about any axle. Even if it seems to be cast into the pumpkin, just grind untill your content. From there, make or purchace new mounts, and put them where ever you want them.

Russel,
Are you talking about the rear 60 or a front 60? If you are talking rear, no problem, just cut off the spring perches and reweld them where ever you like. Make sure to duplicate the pinion angle in relation to the perch. If you are talking about the front you will run into problems. One side will be easy to relocate as it is just welded on. The other perch is usually cast into the center section and would not be a candidate for narrowing.
Ultim8kaos is right. the cast purch can only be remachined as far as the casting will allow before you break thru into the gear area.

I used to have a photo of a late model axle, but can't find it. arrr.
I thought the late models had 36 inch spacing?
Ok, Just for kicks:
if I have a vehicle with 31 inch spring spacing that's 5 inches difference from the late model ford; 2.5 inches per side. Give or take.
I also have narrow 2 inch wide leaf springs. Will I be able to move my springs in a little over 2 inches? Or will I be through the housing? Guess I might be able to weld a plate on if I bust into the housing.

The other option would be to cut 4" out of the pass. tube. It would put you right about ~66", which would be about the same as a rear D60.
I don't think you'll get 2" out of the perch width by grinding anything. *Maybe* as much as an inch per side, figuring on the narrow springs and everything.....

And what would suggest to keep my oversize tires from hitting the spring?
(Notice how close the spring is to the WMS on the late model dif)
