i have a 76 gmc, is there any way to over ride the sensor that only allows it to crank over when its in park. I have to put it in reverse turn the key then put it in park pretty hard.:shaking:

its called a neutral safety switch. You can bypass it but its not worth it... buy a new one, they arent expensive....

I unplugged it and ran a jumper wire. When I get the truck at steep angles and the eng dies I like being able to start it with out putting it in park.

its very easy to bypass. it should only consist of two wires. If the circuit is open (R-1-2-3) it wont start. If its closed (P-N) it starts. Remove the switch and make a jumper wire between the two. I used to throw a toggle switch on the dash or some where hidden and also use it as a theft deterent.

It wont start in neutrul either though thats why i was thrown off. Could there be a problem with my ignition?

Maybe the bolts are loose and it just needs to be readjusted. It has a line up hole you can stick a paper clip or drill bit through to realign it and tighten the screw/bolts back up. The vehicle has to be in park or neutral, I don't remember which.
