: which engine to swap?
mud-magnet 07-04-2002, 01:53 PM ok, a 85 nissan truck engine with auto????? worth putting in???? 2.8L chevy, with adapter for stock tranny, i know about that engine, but it should be good enough for my zuki...... what about a swift 1.3L???? sounds like a good swap tp me, but i don't know much about that engine......... still undecided on what engine to drop in it.....
thanks
-Mike
zukimoo 07-04-2002, 05:25 PM one of the local guys had a nissan truck motor in his zook. As far as I know it still runs but never had too much power for the big tires. He really liked the auto tranny....but it was a small motor...
I shouold have the plans for the 2.8 conversion in a week or two....I'll get them to you.
Rockrat 07-04-2002, 06:16 PM Im very cureous about the swift 1.3 seems to me it would be a good swap should bolt right up to the stock tranny then put one of the sumo heads on it dont realy no enough about what parts are interchangable, so many diff combos you could do and that people are doing but I dont beleive Ive ever seen EXACT specifics there's always that lingering oh ya you have to get that part or do this So ill worry more about it when mine blows-up Oh ya Mike are you chasin off the newbies again
:D

Shrock 07-04-2002, 10:22 PM Why not a 1.6 16V? Easy bolt on. 50% more power.
Shawn_C 07-05-2002, 12:07 AM stay away from the swift unless your doi9ng the gti bottom end thing. I would go with the 2.8. Anyway on the swift conversion you have to swap distributers and cams. + My father in law got one done and it was a total dog. It couldn"t even keep up w/ my old leaky 1324. Same tires on both rigs. It's my understanding the swift motors have a rep of being doggy in the sammurai's.
Redfive 07-05-2002, 01:17 AM In reference to Shawn C.-------I'm short on time so i'll make it quick. As I discussed earlier with Mike I have had awesome results wth my swift 1.3 (not a GTI) swap into my zuke! Definately not a dog at all. I did put on the EFI from the sammi motor though which obviously helped out a bit but not sure what happened with your Father-in-laws to get negative results. Later:trooper:
mudlite 07-05-2002, 06:09 AM why would you spend time putting in a 2.8 that is marginally better in Hp than a built 1.6 and weighs twice as much?
If you are going to a 2.8 , you may as well do it right and go 4.3.
Wyld Bill 07-05-2002, 07:00 AM If you wanna come to Maine I can hook you up with a mint V6 FKA motor out of a totalled Nissan 300ZX for around $300 US. IF the guy still has it.
mud-magnet 07-05-2002, 07:15 AM i would john, but its the wiring i don't know how to do........ i would, if there was someone down here i knew that would help me......... and i don't think i could afford to change the engine to 4.3, tranny, t-case, stronger axles ect.......... just wonn't happen till i get a job.....
so the 2.4L nissan with the auto sounds pretty good, cause i can still use the zuki drive train, such as the t-case with my baby lobster for now, and the axles should hold my 33"s with the 5.13:1's......... the nissan engine has 105HP, more than the stocker......
are ya almost done with your 2.8 gaetan??? what did you do for motor mounts??? just fab up your own???? or move the stock ones to fit?????

Shawn_C 07-05-2002, 01:50 PM There is a guy on the off-road bbs that has the 2.8 and he loves it. On the swift 1.3 thing there are a few people I have talked to on the off-road bbs that also have problems with the swift motor. I think I have read similar posts here as well. as for the 1.6 16V well unless you run it carbed it will not even be close in price to a 2.8. You can pick up the 2.8 fairly cheap in a bone yard, then throw in a quick rebuild and some motor mounts and your set. Why go threw all the trouble and money of building a 1.6 when you can just buy a motor that stock will make much better HP and torque. Of course the best motor is one that you can get the cheapest.

regardless of price, the 2.8 is :rainbow: and sux tailpipe:flipoff2:
Shawn_C 07-05-2002, 07:18 PM Yeah, OK........i think the 2.8 got a bad rap. If you take care of any motor it should last you. If your rebuilding it anyway who cares.
OCNORB 07-06-2002, 05:24 AM I say go the Nissan route- I put a z24 in my SJ410 (it came from canada too eh) It had great power and fit rather well. I raced my brothers 3.8 buick with it and blew his doors off. I took it to Moab several times and was very happy with the way it handled and climbed. Worst part of installation was building the adapter between the tranny and t-case. I used the five speed and first gear in the nissan was alot lower than stock. I sold it to a freind who put a 2.8 in it and hates it. The nissan motor was a better all around motor for the zuk. He wants to swap in the ford 3.8 from an aerostar next!
Wyld Bill 07-06-2002, 07:38 AM Mudmagnet, IF your interested, I have a ford ranger with a 2.8 carbed. V6 sitting in my yard. It's got a 4 speed with a hydraulic clutch. It's got powersteering that could perhaps be used too. I got it off my father in-law last year to fix up & run on the road OR use the motor in my Zook. It was a rust bucket so I gave up on fixing up the truck. I was all ready to swap it into my Zook but then I found 96 tracker that ran GREAT for $300.
It ran REALLY STRONG before I cut the frame off behind the cab to make a trailer. Since your a Zooker from the far east.....................
If you showed up with a tow truck or a trailer behind a truck & load the whole cab on, IT YOURS! So it's only gonna cost you gas & a ferry fee.;)

re-read my last message.
I said if you are going to bother doing the lack luster 2.8 , you may as well go to the 4.3. But why bother????????
You can get as much out of a 1.6 that you could out of a 2.8
:flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2: Honourable Newbie's:rolleyes:
mud-magnet 07-06-2002, 02:28 PM lol............ no, i went to look at the nissan and the tranny is huge, not a chance it'll fit......... if i didn't just get my shafts made i'd move the t-case....... but i just got em.....
i'm going to look for 2.8L.............. good enough for me.....
and is there a way i can change my status from granate guru to honerable newbie without buying a red star???

Shawn_C 07-06-2002, 03:18 PM Talk to Zuk Jr. on the off road bbs he did a good write up on his web site about the 2.8 swap.
SNOWzuki 07-06-2002, 06:48 PM I'd just go wih the 1600 16V.
It's working great for me!
I'm getting to try it out at Hummer World in Dayton, TN
next weekend.
mud-magnet 07-06-2002, 06:53 PM well good luck newbie, hope she holds up for ya but i'm going to go with the 2.8L.......... l8r all.......

Wyld Bill 07-07-2002, 07:50 PM Well, my offering of a 2.8 for FREE still stands if your interested.
mud-magnet 07-07-2002, 08:01 PM yeah, i vist the orc board often and talked to brian before, but he put the tranny, t-case and all in his, i'm only using the engine, with an adapter for the stock tranny.......
thanks anyways
and no, not interested in the engine, if it was close i'd jump on it but its not so sorry, i'm sure someone will be happy to remove it from your yard for ya.....:D :D :D
thanks though:smokin:
zukimoo 07-07-2002, 11:08 PM Mike,
I've got alot of pics on the digital camera, as soon as I get them I'll send them to you.
we moved the tranny 3" back(need to shorten the shaft) and we ran the fan in front of the rad(trying this out), as for engine mounts they are almost stock
We tried to run double pipes out the back but the gas tank is in the way......I'll get back to you soon.......
later from the Zukimoo............
mud-magnet 07-08-2002, 08:05 AM hey Gaetan, when ever you find even 5minutes, open ICQ i have a few questions to talk to you about conserning the swap....... thanks alot
