I am thinking of having louvers( I hope I spelled that right) put into the hood of my flat fender to improve cooling. Has any one done this? did it actualy improve your cooling? got pics? where can I get this done?

Another option is to use the plastic louvers off of another vehicle, like a Grand Prix or 5.9L Grand Cherokee. I found this pic on a BB, these are louvers from a Grand Prix. They are plastic though so they might look kind of <IMG SRC="smilies/rainbow.gif" border="0"> on a flatfender. It is getting hard to find someone to stamp them into your hood, try the hot rod guys around your area. If you are having cooling problems you can always cut out the inner fenders too.

go to a hot-rodder/ custom auto place, they should be able to louvre a flattie's hood for reletivly cheap

I hate to cut the fender wells out because they do a good job at stopping mud from being flung into the engine compartment. Thanks for the idea, ill start talking to some hot rod guys. Any body else got some pics and or personal experience. <IMG SRC="smilies/jeep2.gif" border="0">

A buddy of mine has them in the hood of his CJ5 and Scrambler. Do believe they cost around $1 per louver. Should help cooling at idle quite a bit letting the heat rise

i just used a couple of cj vent grills and cut rectangular holes in my hood. i put one on each side and they don't look too bad. cheaper and easier than the louvers.

I had a bunch of louvers in one of my Toyotas
to match the one I had put in my tailgate. I did not notice a difference in cooling. I don't think there is enough area to make a difference.

I've been thinking of doing something like this, too. Friends have done it and swear by it..

I'm not too familiar with how louvers are punched, so I may be talking out of my @ss here, but.......I've seen it done on tv, and the machine they used was a pretty large set-up. It wasn't just a punch type of thing you could get for fairly cheap. Just an FYI. Good luck.

For my XJ cooling was a nightmare because of the V8. I cut some holes in the hood and they hellped greatly. To cover the holes I just got a set of CHEAP vent grills from the hardware store. If you are interested in a nicer look hit the boneyards.

When looking at scoops and louvers remember that you want something to let air OUT not in. Air flow cooling problems come because the engine compartment is not allowing enough air out and getting packed with heat. This stops the air moving across the raditor from having good flow. The other down side is that the air you suck into the engine is now hotter and will cause the engine to make less power and runn hotter. Plus you have to work it harder because it is making less power. Old 280ZX's have a cool NACA style scoop that can be turned around. Look mostly at imports, they seem to have the most choices.

I was thinking of dies/punches that could be used in a hydraulic shop press. I've looked online but couldn't find anything other than $1k dies for $10k machines to do the pressing.

Great if I wanted to knock out louvered hoods all day long, but I don't. <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

A guy I knew was on a trip to the 4corners area and his 3.8 buick in his toyota 4x4 kept overheating (hauling a camper) so he stopped at a place in some little town and two hours later had alot of louvers put in the hood. It fixed his overheating problem and looked pretty good.

BTW Cruisers have them stock on the back corners of the hoods.

i talked to a local hot rod guy about 2 weeks ago he gets $1.30 per louver and you have to sand the paint off before he will do it.

They ended up costing about $1 per louver and they look nice. They should really help the cooling:usa:

I used an AC unit I found in a scrap yard. Just cut the hood welded them in filled the weld with a little glass. I would have to say that it droped the temp by 20+. If this thread is still going I will try to find a pic when I return home.

I did it to my CJ7. 454 in an 81. Didnt do one bit of a differance. I think it all depends on how hot you are getting. Dont expect a huge differance. I wouldnt do it again.

The hood on my 76 Cherokee is louvered.The only thing Iv found its good for is soaking my engine when it rains.

Since this thread has been revised I figured I would post a pic of the painted hood. This one is kind of junky but I will post a better one tomorow

they are not louvers but it definetly help cool down the engine temp
