I think I'm going to weld up one of my spare diffs for this weekend. Either tonight or tomorrow morning.

I got a D44 already set-up, chiped spider gears. Perfect canidate.

Question: Would it be OK to weld it without pulling the diff, or would it be better it I pulled it an pulled the ring gear off??

Also, I plan on not welding the gears to the case, as I *would* like to save the 4-serise carrier for future use (if I like the lincon, I'm going full spool later and would like to save this carrier for other projects). Has anyone had sucsess removing welded spiders from a carrier?? I *think* it might be possible, but at the same time IIRC how they come out, it might not work...

thanks

are you carrying the whole axle? i dont get what you mean pull the diff? pull the diff, weld the thing(to the carrier) and have a good spare. if you need just a 4 series carrier one of these days just trade the whole welded diff to someone for a carrier.

You can weld it "in" if you get the housing CLEAN afterward. That means removing all the slag and weld BBs and such so that shit is not bouncing around in your gear oil. If you end up pulling the diff then yes, remove ring gear and also put an aluminum bar or wood dowel in the spine areas of the spiders. You need something in there to keep weld spatter from sticking to your splines. Don't ask how I know
I have done 3 so far welding just the 4 gears together, not to the case. 2 rigs running 36s and 1 with 33 boggs with no problems so far.

DITTO.

Yes, you can weld it in the housing, and yes, it's better to weld it out of the housing with the ring gear off.

Oh, and one more thing. Yes, you can get the welded spiders out and salvage the carrier, but you might be better off to drop a few bucks on a new one if you ever decide to go that route. On one of mine, the welds were already broke, so the gears came out okay with a little persuasion. If the gears were still fully welded, you'd have to grind or torch the welds or something to get the gears out. The only time I've pulled the gears, the welds were already broke, so I'm not sure how easy or hard it would be to torch the gears out.

Better off pulling the carrier to weld it. The old timers around here like to use an old ring gear to stop the carrier from warping. Go slow, and weld the gears to the carrier. If you don't weld the shit out of it, it will break, and probably at the wrong time:nuke:

Hey RUSTO....

Are you going wheeling this weekend? If you are going to weld that thing then let me know how it goes or if you need a hand....

I would like to rent your services and 220 MIG to weld my rear as well...Really soon!

Weld it in place. I've done several and no breakage (yet). I clean the unit with break cleaner, air it out really well and then I spray the ring gear with anti-splatter. I just weld the spider gears to the side gears. I don't weld them to the case. Just personal preference I guess. It's been said before, just be sure to clean it well afterwards.

Now, weld it and Get It :skull:

Yeah... that.

Use the entire can of break cleaner and "air it out" with air from your compressor.

Well, I pulled the carrier last night and welded it up this morning :)

Didn't pull the ring gear, just duck-taped it and the bearings off. Seemed to work well. Started with just the spiders.... then went nuts and welded the crap out of the whole thing :D :D Nice and solid.

Cleaned all the BB's out and slaped it back in... nice. Whould make this weekend more fun

Thanks for all the advices, used a whole can of brake clean and the sun.

Hoop: too lasy and too cheap to go up to randys this morning. Should have though, propbably took longer to weld it with all the clean up, but I saved $80 ;)

Mark: Name the time.... I like glueing metal :D :D

well see how many shafts I can break tomorrow :flipoff2:
