i got an 89 chevy 1 ton 454/t-400 with 410s in the rear.

it needs tires

what do you guys think it would do to the truck to run 37 goodyears (hummer tires) i have a set of perfect hummer military tires

i know i will have to get 16.5 wheels for it ...not a problem

this is strickly a tow rig..
the longest run will be 6 hours but not very often....

Get a tow rig not a trail/tow rig, trust me your pocket book will thank you later.

Big tires gobble power, depending on what size tire you have now will determine if it is just marginally worse or terrible. I like stock size tires on a tow rig.

I tow with a 93 454. It needs more power, not less. I would sell the tires and get something stock height.

yeh have about the same setup with a 350/465 combo and i ran 41's plus i have also ran 285's on it too. needless to say id run the 41's. i have 38's(more like 36's) and the combo is great. run them and dont look back and mileage will improve at crusing ...not liek you will notice on that truck anyways

I'll start out by saying I run 60 psi in mine at all times (max is 65psi)

If you have power to spare (like we both do) your milage should not be to bad. Now I'm sure there is a point when to wide a tire will kill milage, but my 15.5's are not a issue. I just went on a road trip with mine empty got 16.6mpg and that was in the hills :D

Tall ant as bad as wide IMO....

The main concern I have with mine is brakes. The brakes get less effective the taller tires you get.

I have a 79 K30 with swapped in CTD on 35-inch H2 tires/wheels (BFG AT). It had 33's on it when I got it, and they were worn out. They were 16.5s so I couldn't air down for the beach. And with 4.10 gears, even with overdrive 5-speed, the Cummins was still buzzy on the highway.

Mine is great with 35s and overdrive. I can see 37s working well since you don't have overdrive.

I still have enough power to do what I want, the CTD is very mildly tweaked. On the highway, I never shift out of 5th with my 7k bumper pull trailer (we have some hills, but have not been to the mountains with it yet), and only go to 4th on big hills with my 14k gooseneck.

My mileage stayed the same, or went up a little.

But back to the brakes - I can tell a difference even going from the 33's to 35's, especially with the gooseneck loaded heavy (it has brakes on both axles, and they work). I would like a big brake kit for the D60, but have not been able to find one. Am getting ready to put on some Hawk front brake pads. Would like some cryo'd and drilled/slotted front rotors, but can't find any for this truck. Will likely be getting an exhaust brake down the road.

The brakes will stop the truck itself fine, and the 7k bumper pull fine. The gooseneck lightly loaded is great too. But if the goose is over 10k or so, you can tell. Like if you almost miss a turn, or a stop sign comes up in front of you on a country road you're not familiar with. I drive conservatively (not fast), and it still makes me nervous every once in a while. Last time I drove it, had 2 Camaros on the goose (10-12k? trailer weight), and had a stoplight turn red at the bottom of a hill. I was going the speed limit (55) when the light hit yellow. It was *all* I could do to get it stopped in time, and could smell the brakes after that. I'm hoping the Hawk pads and maybe new rear shoes too will make a difference. (sorry to ramble)

How much weight will you be towing?

My wife likes the big tires, and I like the change in final drive ratio they provide, but I think it would be better with some 31s and 3.55 gears. I just need enough tire for off-pavement towing/parking and trailer-less trips on the beach.

A heavy load and not enough gearing is a fast way to kill a TH400.

I've towed with those Humvee tires before, they're actually not that bad. The carcass is pretty stiff so they don't have a lot of issues with sway & lateral control.

As far as the performance...works great on the rig above, but it's got a worked 12v Cummins and a 5-speed. Yours might not like it as much.

How did you get plenty of power? It's a serious question. Mine doesn't have plenty, more like barely enough.

I wish my Bronco was built like that..

If your having to tune up your engine to make it pull what it should normaly pull then somethings wrong, unless you really havent tuned it up for a long time then again somethings wrong...
Long or not the engine will still be in a strain as will the tranny short hard trips will kill is as fast as long hard trips.
