: building a "new" 1 ton scout 80- or -800
VERTIGO 02-05-2008, 08:31 PM welp... after years of destruction, cutting, pasting, welding, cutting again... I've decided to build a new rig. Right now i have a 72 scout, bigblock, C6, doubler, 1 tons, 40's. I was thinking about going back to a full bodied rig, and trying to keep her nice for a while... all the right tubes and sliders... cage, doors, top...
My new plans are some sort of scout 80 or 800
going with a fuely 5.0 mustang motor, c6, 203/205 doubler. and my 1 tons. My rig still works, and works great, but, no top, doors, and not to mention smashed to hell... and heavy. as she sits i believe its around 6500 pounds. things just tend to get outdated over time
What years should i look for as a decent start. My plans are to remove the body, clean up the entire frame, drop in a 302 / auto, make all my mounts, tabs, links and of course wire the whole thing. Then take everything off my other rig, and start swapping.
Can someone tell me the difference between the 80s and the 800s? certain years i should stay away from?
The reason i want an 80 or 800 is because the scout 2 is to damn big...
Thanks.. o and if anyone has a scout with no drivetrain, blown motor, and wants to get rid of it... please let me know.
here is a couple of how she sits now...
reckless 02-05-2008, 08:47 PM 80's have the fold down windsheild, 800 dont. the early 80's has slider door windows, the later ones had roll down.
BLK Scout 800 02-05-2008, 09:11 PM I can't think of any reason one would be better than the other after you gut it down to a body and frame.
Some 800's came with a V8 for me it worked out easier to drop a 350 in cuz the engine bay already had a V8 in it. I know they moved the front crossmember foward and I think the radiator mounted further foward also.
VERTIGO 02-05-2008, 09:17 PM are they both the same size?
inside the same? out side the same?
I will probably be making my own dash, seat mounts,
how can you tell the difference between the 80s and 800s besides the windows? or is it just based off year?

Hammered Scout 02-05-2008, 09:33 PM Since you got fabbing skills just look for the cleanest and cheapest one can find!
MochaMike 02-05-2008, 10:00 PM Other things too look at is the bulkhead: none, permanent or removable.
80 dash is simpler. (my opinion)
Heating vents differ a bit as well.
I think the 800s have duct work in the fenderwells, as well as mod to the tranny cover or floor I think.
80s only came with saddle style tanks...
I think the 800s came with a tank under the rear bed at some point (not 100% sure).
Hard tops are not inter-changeable without some drilling/fabbing.

not the cheapest, but a runner might be a good start.

lol... nice.. i just saw that one about 10 minutes ago. I searched all of craigslist, free would be nice too... found a few for $500 or less, looks like it is what it is..
binderbound 02-06-2008, 12:45 AM The best 80's are 63-65. Roll down windows, no bulkheads, regular heat/vent systems.
The best 800's are the newest ones. 69/70 had the most 'luxury' items.
All IMO of course.
I love my 63 to death. So simple. Easy to work on. Free. People just give the old ones away.
Post your build when you get to it.
NVScouter 02-06-2008, 07:07 AM PM Binderbasher. He has a line on one is Susanville for $100 that runs. It is rather rusty though. How good/much of a body do you want?
MochaMike 02-06-2008, 09:34 AM Check out the hood/fenders on this one...

VERTIGO 02-06-2008, 10:50 AM Hopefully, I can find something as straight as possible, lil rust is ok. What im looking for is to get back to a nicely done, straight scout that i can be proud of... lol .. with the right drivetrain, top, doors. Like i said, everything is getting swapped so a non runner would be cool...
Trust me I've searched alllllll of craigslist and found some pretty good deals for $1000-1500, but what im looking for is "free" - $500 tops. .. . and i will find one, it's just a matter of time.
just like the hp60 i got FREE!
I've just wanted to know the differences and what ... in your guys opinion are the best years, because of little things. And i got some great answers...
Thanks again, and as soon as i get one i'll post pics of the whole build. !

NVScouter 02-06-2008, 12:57 PM I'll keep my eyes out here for one.
MochaMike 02-06-2008, 02:20 PM I watch the BA Craigslist for them....
Around the Holidays there were a couple that came up in the $100-$500 range.
One was in Oakland, one in Pleasanton/Dublin, & I think another in Sonoma or Fairfield...
All were non-runners that looked like they were just parked & sat for 15 years.
Bad tires, dirty, bad paint, surface rust, etc, etc. great candidates really.
I wish I had the money at that time..

EXACTLY what im thinking... one of those.. PLEASE get this thing out of my yard kinda deals.... Like i said, im not in a huge hurry so a yard car would be fine...
I think what i need to do is drive around rio linda for a while and drag 5 home with me. .. . lol.. .
Snoopy 02-06-2008, 05:31 PM 800s would most likely be easiest to build for the engine bay alone. 80/800's body style is my favorite, I look forward to your build.
reuben 02-06-2008, 06:00 PM I did not read the entire thread, but it sucks going from a buggy to a full bodied rig. I tore down my 1 ton scout 2 buggy and built a 80 with all the parts. you cant wheel it how you want to because there is to much body in the way. I tore mine down after just a trip or two and am now building another buggy.
Brandon 02-08-2008, 05:36 PM it sounds like your building my rig. You should just buy it, sheez I'll never finish.
Might check out the build thread though. 5.0/C6/203/300, arb'd HP D44/35 spline disk D60, full sectioned body, etc etc

Personally I don't know why anyone would build an 800 over an 80. Ya gotta totally build either one and the fold down/removable windshield is a no brainer. Feel free to swing by and check out my hoopty for ideas if ya want. 80's have a flat like cj dash and 80's don't. The only things I liked on the 800 are the rear tailgate (can be swapped) and.. well that's about it I guess.
MochaMike 02-08-2008, 06:53 PM 61 & 62 80s tailgates came with the "IH" logo vs "International" as well.
And brandon meant 800s don't have a flat dash like a CJ.
VERTIGO 02-08-2008, 11:52 PM Ha, Thanks Brandon. Looks sweet! PM me and tell me where about you are in Sac, i'd love to stop in and take a look sometime.

jump on it!
VERTIGO 02-22-2008, 09:37 AM ya, kinda looking for somthing a little cleaner... thats why im starting over in the first place. I know i could probably piece together top, doors, and a few more dents,
What are the chances of finding a top and doors for somthing like this. It looks like a half cab which is sweet... Is the fold down windshield really the only thing different between the 80 and 800? I'll probably make my own dash so thats gone as well...
Brenden
Brandon 02-22-2008, 10:41 AM I got a top for $100, not ready to give it away though. I think I have spare doors too, gotta double check. I agree, she's a little rough. Wasn't sure how clean you were planning on going. I have a complete side (both sides) of a parted scout you could have to get it out of my yard. I have older 80 doors (no roll up windows) I'd trade for a case of SNPA. I was going to make some half doors with them but naah.
scout254 02-22-2008, 11:47 AM I got a top for $100, not ready to give it away though. .
Probably a full top:flipoff2:
Brandon 02-22-2008, 12:00 PM Probably a full top:flipoff2:
Probably :flipoff2: I didn't catch him writing about the half cab, there is no half/full differences, only the top that bolts on to it ;)
Although that does look like a solid bulkhead
MochaMike 02-22-2008, 12:55 PM Although that does look like a solid bulkhead
It is.
Brandon 02-24-2008, 12:29 AM It is.
wrong according to his for sale post :flipoff2:
MochaMike 02-24-2008, 01:33 AM wrong according to his for sale post :flipoff2:
Actually I think he is wrong....
It looks like a solid bulkhead.
Solid bulkhead Scouts (Figure 1: #7) do not have the support/rail/handle that goes from the wheel well up to the side of the body behind the cab.
Removable (Figure 2: #12 & #33) & Walk-through models do. (Figure 3: #6 & #12)

Brandon 02-24-2008, 02:58 AM mine doesn't have a rail and it is walk through..
http://whiteknucklemotorsports.net/gallery2/d/6249-2/DSC09488.jpg
I really don't think mine was modified either..
EDIT, I just realized there are THREE versions. So mine came as a walk through and never had an option of a "removable" bulkhead? I am confused..
Brandon 02-24-2008, 03:01 AM I just looked at his picture and I'd have to agree with ya, doesn't look very removable to me! Still confused on the removable and walk through though..

Scout 800, has been used sparingly since 2003, not registerd since 02, straight six, runs idles, rebuilt by previous owner, would take a couple hours to get it running perfect. 3 speed, roll cage, dana 44 rear and a 25 or 27 front, green primer color, no rust holes, some surface rust on floorobards but not through. pretty clean for an old scout, sits on newer 31s,
ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS or 500 bucks plus, looking for 63" chevy 1/2 ton springs, toyota dual case adapters and case, stock rear yota spring,
ar-15 upper receiver, toyota gears, V6 rear end, IFS steering box etc,
