: SM465+4spd Tcase? Anyone done this?

Hey y'all, sorry for the silly question, but I see *everywhere* on how to adapt a SM460 to an early 3speed tcase, but nothing on how to adapt it to a later 4spd case (I have a late 84 FJ60).

I'm getting desperate for crawl ratio, but I can't afford an Atlas II (and all the required adapters) right now...

I'd certainly be willing to pay for a one-off solution, but I'd hope there would be more interest as the 3 speed cases are getting hard to find and it would be a lot more economical (and shorter) than a 203 doubler...

Thanks!

Are you talking about a SM465??
AA has an adapter for the 2wd SM465 to the split case

It looks like it ads about 5" to the length @ $120 per inch:eek:

Advance adapters is your only source, got one on Yeller, bad....length & dollars
good..... strong and has a OEM mount pad on the adapter.

Yeah, I meant 465... :D

Somehow I figured that AA would have the only adapter on the market...

Glo, Texas isn't THAT far away! How much for the combo?

Don't mess with a 3spd case in your FJ60. You don't get a better crawl (yours is 2.27 vs. 2.3 for the 3spd). Your FJ60 is a lot heavier than an FJ40 and FJ40s break 3spd cases frequently. Since the 465 has almost 2x as low a first as your H42, it will almost be like running a doubler. BIG improvement. Go with the AA adapter. My .02, sorry Glo, not trying to fawk up your sale just think the split case is a better choice for a 60.

you could also get a non-us 4 speed, it has an almost 5:1 first gear, its not a 465 and certainly not a 420, but for $600 bones you get a lower first and dont need adapters.

Dave is going to the 350 engine at the same time, smarter to go GM tranny also, Go with a SM465 2wd version, I can source them for $100 easy. Then go with35" tires, built in Overdrive....:D

Y'all don't know my "Big Plan" yet, tho... The reason I'm building up this drivetrain (TBI 2F, 420, 3spd case), is so I can eventually install it into a 40 (when I get the wife to agree). The reason I like that combo in a 40 is that its pretty much near stock lenght, so I don't have driveline issues, and it'll go in without much of a fuss. Plus, with that kinda gearing, who needs a V8?

Until then, I'll wheel it in the 60 with the tcase saver and be happy. I'm not a "go-pedal" kinda guy anyway. I like slow-n-steady, especially with the 60, as if it gets outta hand, I break all kinda sh*t...

Now, I DO plan to put a 350 in the FJ60 next year (when I can afford all the pieces), as I'm gonna go slush-box and NP205 (eventually Atlas II). In the 60, I can shove the V8 all the way to the radiator, and even with the auto, not have serious driveline length/angle issues.

If I do break the 3spd case? Well, I'll just have to source a GM transfercase earlier than planned... They're cheaper and easier to come by, and won't cost me $600 for a throwaway AA piece. If I'm gonna send big bucks to AA, its going to be for a Transfer Case, not some @#%^ 10 spline to 19 spline adapter. I can almost get a TBI 350 motor complete for that price!! (They know what they are doing: Make all the adapters so damn expensive that you "might as well" pony up the extra cash for an Atlas)

Right now, I'm looking for affordable crawl, and for the cash outlay for the single AA adapter+465+3spd bellhousing+chev clutch, driveshaft shorten/lengthen; I might as well get the 203 doubler! But then again, if I'm spending $1200 for the doubler why the hell didn't I do a 350 conversion?

You see my problem? The way the truck drives now with its pathetic 29:1 ratio, I'd love to just drive it off a cliff (assuming it could make it that far). Grrr!

By the way, check out my latest dumbass move (courtesy of the Llano river basin):

In short, another Wagon Guy going to the 40's :D

I have a 350TBI in my 60 with a Ranger Underdrive, h55f, split case, and 4.10s. I have adequate gears for the most part. I'm getting lazy and I don't want to shift anymore. I want to scrap my entire drivetrain and go to a 700r4 to a NP203 to a split case. The 700r4s are fairly cheap and if you find a 203 that came with a Turbo 350 it is adaptable to the 700r4 without an adapter. So you are left buying an adapter to go between your 203 and split case which is just over $500. In a wagon this combination should be near perfect as it will shorten that long rear driveshaft and tuck it up a bit higher so it is out of the way. I guess I'm overly paranoid about this rear driveshaft thing as I wrapped one around a rock on Double Whammy. I just thought I'd through this out for you as you haven't spent any money yet and it might be an option you haven't considered.

I agree with Ken that using a 3 speed case in a heavy wagon is not a good situation. Did you ever see Bruce Miller's exploded 3 speed case in his 60? And it wasn't just cracked, it literally exploded.

And I would say that there are far more 40 guys moving to wagons, mostly 80s now though. I would drive a 40 but it just doesn't go the distance. I drove 269 miles a few weeks ago for about 5 miles of trail, but probably 90 miles of the road was fire road unsuitable for a tow rig. That would have been a long trek in a 40. But the AC and length of the 60 made it pretty comfortable trip to the trailhead. No DUST!

Just a quick question: Don't 55s use the same tcase? Are not they *heavier* than a 60?

Did Bruce Miller run a 2F in his 60? Did he have >33" tires? Did he run a tcase saver?

I'm just trying to correlate the one or two examples of people breaking a 3speed case with a particular situation. I'm guessing 90% of them were running torque monster V8s and were probably running a carb, on a hill, that got flooded and they gassed it to clear it and boom: 330+ ft-lbs out the crank into the drivetrain.

My 2F dreams of making 200 ft-lbs! :D

Trust me, if it happens I'll be the first to post and say: "You're right, I'm a fawkin' dumbass" :D

I appreciate all the advice though...

"Did Bruce Miller run a 2F in his 60? Did he have >33" tires? Did he run a tcase saver? "

Bruce Miller was running a 2F, on 36" Swampers as far as I know. I don't know whether he had a transfer case saver or not, but I doubt it would have mattered. From what I hear it was a matter of being in a bind, attempting to reverse out, and popping the clutch. Bam!
