I'm about to purchase a GM 330 hp crate motor and have the chance to purchase the 700r4 and NP205 with it.
Since I'm not a GM person (yet) my questions are:
Is is this set up trail worthy, or will it require a doubler to really work?
I didn't think this set up was available stock, has this been modified?
Are there any weaknesses I should know about?
What is a fair price for the 700r4 and 205?

Thanks.

by now most 700s would have all the updates.
that one, since it has a 205 attached that never came factory IIRC, most likely has been upgraded
ask the seller.
700s have a bad rep

I am a Chevy/GM guy all the way but 700r's are the biggest pieces of !@#$ money can buy. But since someone put a 205 on it, which never came stock by the way, they probably put a little work in the Trans. I am just tired of helping all my buddies swap the damn things out! But you can beef the things up to handle plenty of HP, it just takes money. I wouldn’t pay any more than 400 for the combo, unless it had super low miles. 700s are only good for about80-100 thousand miles.

My 700 r4 has 192,000 and never a problem but is has been serviced every 50,000 miles and it is a 89 that has all of the updates.

The 700R4 has a really low first gear and it has overdrive. Does that really sound too bad?

As you can see by the guys here, the 700R4 has a bad rep for falling apart. Keep it cool, keep good fluid in it, and it will do fine for you. The 205 did not come factory with that tranny. Someone added it.

It doesn't sound like too bad of a combo. Find out how much the seller has invested in it. If the seller didn't buy the adapter, offer $500. If the seller did buy the adapter, and he's a friend, be an ass and still offer $500!
