: Spring rates

I'm going 14" coilovers on 4 corners on my rig and I'm now doing the calculations for the spring rates. Its so complicated and it comes worse by the fact you may order the springs with the shocks almost at the same time.

Unfortunately I have no option for trial and error, well there's but at a big cost, and the vendor has no real experience on rockcrawler applications. So I must get near the optimum rates at the first attemp.

The jeep is basically sleeper YJ, 35" tires that will come up to 37" and 4 link suspension 3/4ton axles growing to 1ton, No fenders or stingers but a low profile winch. Other than that is a stock rig. 4.0L -> 4.9L / AW4 /NP231+D300 but I don't think it matters. The overall weight at half tank is 3860Lbs and I hope it stays here after the cage build.

I searched for the average ratios but everyone has Its own approximation. I'm so confused at the moment. (200 over 200 to 300 over 375!) Whats supposed to be the safe numbers for a trail rig that sees some black band travel?

My calculations are 145/218 with a 87lbs base rate with 60% drop travel and 3" ID springs at the front. It seems to me totally wrong at the soft side. Doesn't you?

The shock valvings set to Light/Med in compression and Med rebound.

Well on the front of my bros we have 16" 200 lb/in and 14" 150 lb/in.

We haven't done much driving or wheeling on it yet though because of school :banghead:

Thanks Heep! I'm now writing down all the numbers I found on Pirate with the "feelings" from the owners and will be weighting the frog as soon as possible.
