Have recently purchased an '84 GMC 2500 High Sierra. Am trying to figure out what axles I have. Rear is a 14-bolt with the irregular shaped differential cover (for the 10.5" ring gear) but it does not have the axle shaft bolts on each end at the hubs. Did they make these in a semi-float configuration? Also, front axle is a 10-bolt but am not sure of manufacturer or ring gear size. What axles did they use in these trucks? I have looked a little with no luck but where might I find any markings on these axles? Thanks for your help!

GM CORPORATE 14-BOLT
The "small" GM 14-bolt has a 9 1/2-inch ring gear diameter. It was used in the rear of 1964-and-later GM pickups, and in the rear of 1984-91 3/4-ton Suburbans.

GM CORPORATE 14-BOLT
With a 10 1/2-inch-diameter ring gear, the biggest 14-bolt GM rearend looks much like a Dana 70, and is but a few thousandths of an inch shorter in ring gear diameter. This axle is commonly used with big engines and/or overly large tires. It

I would post pics but truck is at my parents at the time (50 miles away). Rear axle is the 14-bolt 10.5" ring gear that you have pictured above. If that is true, why does my axle not have the shaft bolts at the wheels as it should?

Umm I dunno? Maybe they have center caps that cover the axle flange. Other than that no idea's what to tell you man.

This is not a very clear question. Are you asking about the bolts that hold the drive flanges in place?

there is NO 10.5" semi floater, it was never made factory.
you have a 9.5" 14b with semi float and no flange bolts.

And after reading your bibles, there's not much you can swap on the SF to the FF.

if you want the FF they are everywhere and usually pretty cheep too. can probably score one out of a junkyard for $200 if you make them pull it off.
the front axle will either be a dana 44 or a gm 10 bolt axle. they both look pretty much the same the only difference visually that i notice is the pinion cover sticks out a bit more on the dana 44.
