: Exo Roll Cage question on bolting together section.
lowlypawn 02-08-2008, 11:57 PM If you want to make the exo cage removable I have a few questions on what’s the best way to bolt two bars together?
1) For example what’s the best way to bolt a “T” section together?
2) And what’s the best way to join straight sections “-------+---------“
3) Is there hardware available for sale on the web?
Thx in advanced! BTW I googled and found tons of picture of exo roll cages but no real close ups and none look removable.

Here are a few pictures of where I got my idea and a rough concept of what I am going to make.
And yes I’m not expecting it to help in a rollover, It’s main job is to hold the roof rack up, some lights and maybe keep a few small branches off the paint. Shopping carts is about all I’m expecting it to stop. It should be a fun project and make my titan standout from a crowd.

The Black Sheep 02-10-2008, 09:36 AM If you are not building it for a rollover whats the point? If you want to hold up a roof rack and lights, then just buy or make a roof rack and/or lightbar.
If you are just bolting it together then it seems like strength is really not a factor in your design, so as long as its sturdy and doesn't deflect or bend from normal vehicle bounce and wind and it looks pretty who cares hows its bolted together.
TAWL_BOY 02-10-2008, 12:45 PM The average joe's exo cage is not that good looking. Some great and creative fabricators have pulled off some really cool ones. No offence, but I don't think you'll pull that off from the questions you have asked.

I just wonder why he is exo'n a new Nissan P/U  He has to be still paying for it that is what I don't get.
lowlypawn 02-10-2008, 04:05 PM Finally some replies, thou not exactly confidence inspiring :(. But I understand, new member (thou I have been lurking in these message boards for a year) Most people talk a big game but don’t really pan out. Hopefully I can pull this off and make it look professional.
I located some hardware for joining two pieces together. http://www.polyperformance.com/shop/product.php?productid=66&cat=58&page=1
It needs to be removable so 1 can finish welding, paint and maintenance. The reason I stated I don’t expect it to save my truck in a roll over is I don’t think I’m committed enough to tie it into the front bumper like needed. To really make the cage strong enough for rollover I would need to make custom front and rear bumpers to tie it all together. I would also need tubes triangulating the rear like the Toyota picture. For right now my plans is something comparable to the yellow Axis armada picture.
I’m going to start of with 1st making the roof rack and see how that looks. I’m not crazy about just bolting it to top of my roof. I think the exo cage idea would be much stronger and look much better.
I have a jd bender and lots of time so I’m hoping if I take my time I can really make something that looks professional. I really want to make a 3 & 4 link suspensions and stuff but I better start off with the easy stuff first.
BTW my titan is an 04 and paid for.
Ian from Xtreme 02-10-2008, 04:31 PM For a "t" joint you cannot beat a tube clamp set up.
http://www.polyperformance.com/shop/O.D.-Tube-Clamp-p-1727.html
For straights. Weld a locating slug into one tube and then use tube flanges for hold them together.

A more trick option for staights is to use tube ID clamps.

I have cut and modified the tube clamps for "t" joints as well
Poly Perf is a great source for this stuff.
TAWL_BOY 02-10-2008, 06:45 PM Yeah, buy the episode of Xtreme4x4 when they build the FJ cage. It should be on itunes for a couple of bucks.
We'll if you know how to use a bender and maybe bendtech or somethin' you might be able to pull it off. Make some rock sliders to mount part of it to.

Those were the same kind of connectors that I thought of as well. Another place to get ideas from would be Rock Hard 4x4 Parts (http://www.rockhard4x4parts.com/index.html). They make bolt together roll cages for Jeeps, and use the same type of tube clamps as listed above.

lowlypawn 02-14-2008, 10:21 PM I finished the stand to my bender so now I’m ready to start fabricating! The shoe prints on bender are from me kicking it to see how strong it was. Plenty :)

I haven’t read all the directions yet but do you guys have any tips that might help me?
Like how should I keep it lubed? WD40?
And I think just through shear dumb luck I set it up where I will be able (have room) to bend a 20’ piece into a perfect square.
Ian from Xtreme 02-17-2008, 08:16 PM Tip....
Bend Tech Pro. Get it, learn it, use it, you will love it!!!!!!!!
