: Jeep Broke, engine died, need advice
Culpies 07-05-2002, 05:41 PM okay 93 wrangler 4cyl 140K. Driving to work and it just died on me. Engine turns over but does not start. Checked Electrical system, it's okay, I know I have spark. Fuel system seems to be functioning, have checked as far as the relief vavle on the fuel rail, but not the injectors themselves. Codes coming from the computer are normal, no problems there. Did a cold compression check and come and got 0, 20, 45, 0 (1-4) and the compression got no better with the addition of oil to the cylinders. Any suggestions? Are those compression numbers worht anything on a cold engine?
Meyer 07-05-2002, 10:16 PM Umm... if you're using a standard compression tester and coming up with two zero's  time for a rebuild. Normally, anything short of 90 IMHO is bad. They should be around 120.
My first thought when I started reading was fuel filter, but with those readings I think you have a more serious problem.
Culpies 07-05-2002, 10:57 PM That is what I was afraid of, just hoping that the cold engine might have screwed things way up or something. The question now is is it valves, rings, or head gasket. Hell I should probably do the all at once anyway
Radbassist 07-05-2002, 11:08 PM I got $$ on bent valves and a timing chain.

I second this one
ROKWALKER 07-07-2002, 03:43 AM You say turns over? Do you mean the starter turns the motor or is it firing? If you have both gas and spark........it WILL fire. If it jumped time it would probably still run.......badly.
Culpies 07-07-2002, 08:11 AM How about welded shut vavles and chunks of piston in number 4 cylinder? that is what I found when I pulled the head yesterday My number four piston had finally pre0ignited one to many times and blown a moltent chunk up and welded one of the vavles shut and then decided a few more chunks should come off and just sit on top of the piston. :nuke: So here goes the rebuild...let the fun begin (oh yeah and it probably was a bent valve that caused it)
Magoo 07-07-2002, 09:00 PM As for advice....
A small block of your choice (ford, chevy...) would be a nice replacement. :smokin:
Be different and install a BIG BLOCK
Or a 4.6L. Nothing like Stroked and Poked :D
But #1 would be one of them Aluminum Northstars!
Or rebuild, and turbo your 4 popper. :)
Or keep it stock :(
Culpies 07-07-2002, 09:06 PM I wish, I wish, I wish. Due to the need to get my daily driver back on the road and a low digit finacial situation about the only thing I can do is rebuild. what I wouldn't do for one of those northstars:rasta: :smokin:
cleenjeep 07-08-2002, 05:48 AM Look at the numbers. Closer. You might do better to get a used small block, find someone selling a tranny on a board, do as much as you can yourself, get a book and make a wire harness, etc. You may come out ahead that way, and you will learn a ton about your jeep in the process. You will NEVER regret leaving the 4 banger behind.
You WILL, however, be glad you took this advice.
My 4 banger is on its last legs, valves and timing chain, same as yours was. I expect it to either melt down, or just barely make it to the engine swap location in a few weeks! I have a Vortec going in, and I will probably sell the old engine and tranny for laundry money.
Oh, if you must stay with the 4 banger, then search for a used TJ unit, they are a bit nicer, a bit newer, and a bit cleaner. You will probably save some dough there too. Rebuild a 4 cylinder? he he he... crackin my sh** up....

4Bangler 07-08-2002, 10:59 AM Yeah, ever price a Jeep 4cyl from a Junkyard? I got prices ranging from $700 for a burnt one(valve cover melted, TBI a puddle in the intake) with supposedly 60k on it and no warranty, $1000 for a 120k that I could hear run and see smoke, $1200 for a supposed 30k TJ unit with a smashed valve cover and broken rocker, and get this, $2000 for a 20k 4cyl out of a '91 YJ, long block only, fresh black paint, new oil, oh, plus $500 core charge refundable with a rebuildable core! Lots of crack smokin' parts guys out there, I rebuild my 2.5 with lots of goodies and machine work for under $1200, could have been less but I didn't have time to assemble it myself.
cleenjeep 07-08-2002, 05:12 PM I didnt mean a junkyard. He he.. There are enough people around who have taken theirs out, or are about to that you can get a screamin deal on them all day long. See the above post, eh?
