finally getting my jeep fixed to get it to arizona and after sitting for a year i put a new distributer in. i spent all day removing and reinstalling it checking tdc on #1 over and over again turning it 180 and trying again, wouldnt start changed Everything, then i figured out i needed to set the choke, and then it started but now i'm getting this Loud popping noise from the intake. Pretty sure the dist is right with how many times i checked it and when i turn the dist. i can keep it running right where i had it set, and make it run bad and die each way advanced or retarded. Now there is Old gas in there i but I put some gas dry in it. Could the gas somehow be causeing it? stuck lifter or valve? changed the oil befor i started also and primed the oil systerm.
Any Ideas
regular small block truck avenger carb alum. intake ran fine last year. pulled dist for a friend just put a brand New accel dist in and coil

Your more then likely 180* out , I have checked , rechecked , and checked again and still managed to get a few builds 180* out .

you want to tell me that its a 180 off and its running? you guys are dumbasses. What kinda popping are we talking about? Like a backfire, a metalic pop, a firecracker, what?

check the plug wires and firing order again. there are probably a couple crossed

You need to set this with a timing light, just setting it close doesn't work good enough. 180* out would not start, but you can be quite a bit off and still start-but with driveability issues. Also look under the hood at the plug wires -in the dark-and see if you have any sparks causing misfires. You could possible have issues with a stuck valve or something after sitting that long.

I have had one 180 off and running. Timing was also waaaayyyy off as well. granted, it barely ran and I thought it might come apart.:laughing: also got 3 foot flames up and out of the carb.
that was way back in the early days of me messing with cars.
