Guys,

I want to tow this with my WRX from DC to Chicago

http://www.uhaul.com/guide/index.aspx?equipment=trailer-4x8

and I wanted to buy this to tow it with

http://www.etrailer.com/pc-H~11318.htm?vehicleid=20049016

Is there any reason why I cannot do this? It appears from the specs that the gross weight wouldn't be a problem. I don't want to do something unsafe so I'm here to ask for advice.

Also can someone direct me to what wiring harness I should be buying.

Here is a link for wiring harnesses, I just don't know which one to choose.

http://www.etrailer.com/c-ELEE.htm

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Your tow cap on your wrx is 2 grand (I guessed it was a 2004)... the gross weight of the trailer is 850 ish with the gvwr 2500.... I dont know if u haul will let you leave the lot with it behind your wrx, too much liability. Sure you could tell them you are only going to load 1150 or 1200 pounds in it and be under your tow cap, but you would just be guessing at weight, and it could come back on them if you end up in an accident...

That hitch you listed was a Class one, which is:

Class 1 (Class I) hitch

Trailer hitch with capacity of up to 2,000 lbs gross trailer weight and 200 lbs tongue weight.

Thats straight off the uHaul web site....

You might be able to DO it with being smart and not over loading the trailer at all, but

I wonder if uHaul lets you rent the trailer

my advice would be try calling uhaul and see if you can rent the trailer at all with your wrx before buying any thing and possibly wasting your money

if you arnt moving, you might be better off with renting a pickup to make the trip with, if you are moving, rent a truck from uhaul and a trailer and put the wrx on that.

I really don't plan on overloading it weight wise. I'm getting it mainly to tow my kegerator which doesn't weigh that much. I think total weight that I want to haul would be less than 500 lbs. When my fiance moved up to Chicago in August ahead of me she took all the heavy stuff (my tools, our furniture......) which leaves me with very little left to take. I basically only need to bring my kegerator (chest freezer) my mini fridge, and my clothes. If Uhaul will rent it to me and I only put say 500 lbs in there, or even say 800lbs would this in theory be safe?

Then check craigslist, ebay, and walmart/Kmart.
You can buy a small fold up trailer big enough to haul that on for roughly the same price that the rental will cost you.

X2, depending upon how much a trailer plate costs you could buy a new trailer and plate for less than the rental:

40"x48", 1075#capacity, $179:

40"x49", 860#capacity, $139:

For a difference of 50 bucks, only a complete moron would buy anything but the bottom one.

I had the 48" by 96" it was a good trailer to have very nice. They were pretty easy to put together. I know in Va it is around $ 70 to license a trailer of that size and weight. The good thing is you can turn around and sell it for about $250 when you finish and you get your money back. Seems like a win win situation.

rent something from a 1 way optional company like u haul... pickup or van and a car trailer.

don't be towing or putting a hitch on that poor car :)

If you ignore the advice and tow with that car be sure to put the weight toward the front of the trailer so that you have tongue weight. If your trailer wants to to a wheelie it will sway as you pull it down the road and cause an accident.

If you call your local U-Haul dealer they have hitches and wiring kits in stock for most vehicles ... even cars. And they offer installation.

Also give them the Y/M/M of your vehicle and they will tell you which trailers they will rent to you based on the curb weight.

I vote rent a 10ft truck + AT and hual the WRX ...

<- worked at U-Haul

I vote for no truck or trailer at all.

Option B
1) Go behind local warehouse and ask one of the guys for a pallet
2) strap all your shit to aforementioned pallet
3) Find a LTL shipping comapany that needs a job
4) Tell them when you need the pallet picked up
5) Drive to Chicago in WRX and meet the pallet there
(If the above seems too complicated, call a company like PODS that supplies a container and arranges the shipping for you)

Option C
1) Sell your kegerator on CL
2) Pack clothes in WRX
3) Buy a new kegerator off CL in Chicago

I would be surprised if Uhaul would even rent that to you...but it's just a hunch.

I think you would be better off buying one of the ones shown from northern just cause it's so much lighter than the one you showed...that uhaul trailer you showed weighs 850 lbs empty. Thats a load behind a little car like that. The shipping company idea sounds pretty good.

Thread winner!

Either of the options is more sensible than trying to tow with a car. The car could probably do it, but why put more stress on you and the car when there are other ways that are likely as cheap or cheaper than towing?

don't beat up your car. either sell the kegerator, ship it, or rent a U-Haul Box Truck and put your car and kegerator in it and drive.
