What are you guys running for cams in your 460's? I found some dove heads I might grab up for mine, and looking for a cam to help out on the power front a bit. I dont need 600Hp but to bump it up a bit would be nice. I'll admit I'm no motor guru so :flipoff2:

Btw for those who dont know its for the truck in my sig. :homer:

Do you know the specs on the rest of your motor, like the compression? Is the motor stock or not?

Unfortunantly, no. I know it was rebuilt about 3,000 miles ago, but they guy I bought it from had NO fawking clue what had been done to it :shaking:

So what I know is that it's a 460, its been rebuilt, has 3000 miles on it, good oil pressure, and pulls 15" of Vac.

When I'm not so broke I'd like to get a nice cam, some DOVE heads, and an edlebrock intake for it.

Exactly. The best thing you can do is to figure out exactly what your running now, then get those dove heads hogged out to move air. You can also get them decked to get your compression up. Then get a custom grind cut to match your setup. Just slamming in a generic bumpstick is waaay to hit or miss.

Well I got ahold of the PPO (seeings the PO doesn't know his ass from a hole in the ground). From what he recalls he SAYS the motor was built 4 years and 8000 miles ago. 9:1 compression with an all forged bottom end. The heads look to be stock to me, he doesn't know. It has an edlebrock torkerII intake and a 4-barrel on it. Between the 2 of us thats all we could figure out.

a recipe that i have run a couple of time in the past.

stock type rotating assy. make sure you have the football type rods!
cast pistons lived in my application.

c9ve or dove heads.
dont make the intake ports any larger, just a gasket match.
the stock 2.08 intake valve will work fine
streamline the valve guide,
blend the bowl into the seat,
in the exhaust port, dont enlarge the port opening at all.
install cobra jet size 1.75" exhaust valve,
clean up the short side radius,
remove the air injection bump from the port roof,
streamline the the valve guide,
blend the bowl area into the seat,
clean up the chambers and remove any sharp edges
resurface the deck if you are running pump gas, dont worry about shaving the heads for more compression. with c9ve and dove heads you will have plenty already.
for the cam, Comp Cams 268 etreme 4x4
intake i primarily use the weiand stealth. great manifold.
any good set of headers.

this combo, with good clean porting, in my 79 f150 in 4 wheel drive at 4900 pounds ran a 13.1 second quarter leaving the line at idle in drive.
makes unbelivable torque. brake half ton axles with ease.

my pops has a ranchero with a 429 and when he rebuilt the motor he put in the ford racing cam that they use in the 514 crate motor. i think it specs out at 312/315 , 565/585 at .50. real good soundin cam and makes lots of power all the way through the powerband

:eek::eek: OMG, you left the line in 4H?

brake half ton axles with ease.

And 1 tons on the pavement I imagine. :D

had to leave in 4 hi, in 2wd with 4.11s, the 33" mud tires would boil through 2nd gear.

I've done it before. I prefer low third because the third to fourth shift on a np435 takes about a millisecond but with the right gearing (and motor!)it will pull the nose up dropping it into second high at launch...
