I've had several Ford's over the past 7 years but my current truck seems to be having a few issues. The truck is a 2000 7.3 with an auto tranny. On this truck the EBPV really cycles alot and is very noticable while warming up, this is the first time I have expercienced this. Also while driving with the cruise set the truck sort of lurches, it's not really smooth, it also is only getting about 11-12 miles per gallon. All my other trucks would get around 18. Can the truck have injector problems with only 70,000 miles on it?

I am not a diesel mechanic so take this for what you paid for it.

Things that come to mind:
Air filter
Fuel filter
Injector
Fuel pump

Any mods?
Do you have gauges?

When it was new my 2000 would rev up and down when idling when it was cold, the dealer reflashed it when it was getting other warrenty work done, now it just goes to a high idle. CPS could be causeing some of your lurching, when mine started to go it felt like it would miss every now and then, Ford has a recall on the CPS, see if yours has been changed.

Thanks for the replies. I just put an Edge EZ on last week and it helped fuel milage but it still lurches. I'll check on recalls.

First, I'd disable the ebpv. There is a solenoid at the front of the pedestal, undo the connector and see how it drives. It's the plug at the far right in this picture.

Check your spark plugs!:flipoff2::laughing:

Didn't they just announce another big recall on these over the weekend?

I've heard something about a recall. I'll check into it.

Danger Ranger: I unplugged the EBPV and it did help with the valve cycling now it just goes into a high idle. Now I just need to figure out if I have injector problems.

Are you getting a SES (service engine soon) light? If you are, definitely pull the codes. Are you getting any smoke? abnormal smoke other than black? I think you need to get a bit more technical with the description of "lurch". What scenario's? is it speed dependent? all gears? one gear? blah blah blah.

No service engine lights, no white smoke. I'm just confused at this point. The truck really has no problems but it just doesn't seem to run really smooth while cruise is set. Especially when cruise is set and the truck is going down hill, it feels like one of my old 12 valve mechanically controlled Dodges. Like stated before, I've had several Fords, all with higher milage and this one just seems alittle off. I'm sure it's nothing big but it just bugs me. Thanks for the help.

What you're saying doesn't lead me to believe you have a bad injector. Is this truck auto or man? Did it 'lurch' before the edge box? *edit* go get the cps replaced under the recall... they do different things when going out... you never know and besides it's free ;) *edit*

Thanks captain obvious... cause the 2 gallons of oil under the truck didn't tell me that :flipoff2:

Dumb question here, what does the CPS do and what does it stand for?

Ihave a 2000 E350 with the 7.3 and I have had to replace 5 CPS's in the past 5 years all new Ford CPS's. My van has 175,000 and I've owned it since new. Jim

Will the CPS effect fuel milage? I'm just wondering because this truck was only getting about 11 mpg before the Edge. All my others would get around 18 mpg.

Usually the CPS just goes dead, and leaves you on the side of the road cranking away with no start. It usually doesn't give the symptoms you said.

Mine could stall and restart, Or stall and not restart.

A friend of mine told me today to check the EGR valve. I guess I'll try that too.

GOOD idea... it's right next to the muffler bearing, so don't burn yourself :D

I have a 2000 with 138,000 miles and it does the same thing. Only "lurches" or "surges" between 44-48 MPH on flat or slightly downhill stretches of road when the engine has little to no load on it. An older Hypertech programmer and a K&N filter are the only mods. I have no idea why it does this but would like to find out how to fix the problem if possible. This truck has been doing it for 40,000 miles.

I had an issue with my van that drove me nuts and cost me over $2000 for pro's to try to diagnose. I finally couldn't afford to pay people to guess anymore. Seems there is some sort of filter in the fuel line in the fuel tank inside the sock. I seperated my fuel line near the pump and used and airline to blow air into the line through the tank to blow the line out (make sure to remove your fuel cap before you do this) See if that helps.
