: AK gas piston

Why do people replace the gas piston on thier builds? Does this part wear out or is it just for compliance?

Is the original piston supposed to have some "slop" in it? Are there supposed to be gaskets / o-rings on it?

On my build I'm planning to replace the stock, handguards, FCG, pistol grip, and receiver so I should be OK...right?

Some prefer to keep the original stock, handguards and pistol grip, so they replace the gas piston and muzzle brake instead. Your choice really.

The piston should have some slop. No o-rings or gaskets.

Doesn't the fire control group count as 3, and the reciever counts as 3?
Thats your 6 right there:confused:

That's only 4, the receiver is 1 part.

flat + Rails= 3?

nope.

Negative. One part. Rails aren't on the list.

Most common compliance that I've seen is: FCG (3 Parts), Muzzle brake (1 part), receiver (1 part), gas piston or pistol grip (1 part). Total of 6 parts.

Never mind MR ATFman, you can disregard this thread. I thought he had already built the gun. He just had his wires crossed. Though if you do insist on searching his house and whatnot I think he said something about his rectum, you had better look there too.

Myanarchy is safe. We were planning to start bending flats this weekend, so he hasn't even begun to assemble it.

I went with...

FCG = 3
Muzzle brake = 1
Gas piston = 1
Reciever = 1
Pistol grip = 1

So I should have one extra OVER the minimum parts count. Two, possibly, because I hear that you can count the foregrip if you shave the wooden pistol grip off of it. But I'm not sure of that one.

Err on the side of caution and consider it imported.

The piston is often swapped since it does not alter the looks of the rifle, it is fairly easy to swap, and fairly inexpensive to boot.

It needs to have slop in it, unscrew it 1/4-1/2 of a turn after it bottoms out before drilling it for a rivet, DO NOT WELD your pistons in. Having a rigid piston can lead to reliability issues due to a piston that drags on the gas tube or gas block..

Winahh!!

I screwed one in tight, drilled and pinned. Rifle kept jaming. Not closing completely on a new round. Removed carrier and drilled out the rivet. Unscrewed 1 turn, rerivetted. Works great :D
