Kinda cool. But, not too practical in my area where weather is a factor in wheeling. Plus, most trails are considered "roads", so you have to run street-legal machines & no way I could get a plate on that. In nice weather, where allowed, it would be kinda fun though

Funny he want's $18k for it...Two or three years ago I was hangin' at the City Market in Moab, and he mentioned he'd sell it right there and then for $13k...I was very tempted at that price!

Yeah, that is what I was thinking as I wantched it flail around in Farmington for the ARCA.

It is pig shit ugly and it is not "built"

I saw the For Sale sign on it as he wheeled it in ARCA.

Looks like it would be a decent Moab rig, but anywhere else....

IMHO - I like the single-seater-wide concept, but not the implementation there...

I have other ideas, but using hydro steering, a single ATV seat, and handlebars... wth a V8, auto tranny, full width axles and 39.5's... Make one heck of a quad ride

what do you guy's all have against this thing? definatly a new aproach that has alot of potential. I think with some refinement it could be really kick ass, Narrower is definatly good and saves weight too. Maybe some wider axles to conter act the height and some work on the suspension and it could be pretty tough to beat

dont know if I agree with this. Its is constructed of not much 120 Dom and I think he set his wheelbase somewhere around 105" sounds good to me. Steve is a really cool guy, and he helps out alot of people when you go to moab. I think he did go wrong somewhere with it though. I would say its that he believes in little articulation. But thats just my .02. I would own that thing anyday, I think its cool as hell.

Hey, I didn't say I didn't like it ... because I do!
It may not be "heavy" but it sure is top heavy. And maybe it just looks like it has a way longer wheelbase.
It sure has a wide wheel base though.
something that can be a big hinderance ... at least in the Farmington contests.
The extra wide wheelbased vehicles seemed to do poorly here this fall.
(Phil Collard sez ... with a laugh ... that he gets equal complaints about his coarses favoring both the narrow and the wide contestants)
I've seen the Centepede in action several times and strictly from an observation perspective I agree that something about it "is just not quite right" about it to make it a viable ARCA contender.
Here's another pic of the Centepede along with a group I was with this January in Chokecherry.
Note the high center of gravity and the huge difference in axel width compared to the YJ, TJ and my little blue CJ at the opposite end.

http://www.monsterslayer.com/jeep/Pics/Chokecherry_Gang_Jan_01.jpg

And, as I said, these are just the impressions I got from observation and comparison of other rigs running the same trails and gates ...

i think the assasin pulls it of pretty well, but all the other skinny rigs i've seen, (only a couple) are just missing something. the centipede looks to be fun to play in, i've seen it around a few times in person, but i dont know, i really like the ones campbell does, how they get skinnier at both ends but wide in the middle, kinda like walker evans new ride.

I was doing a search and found this thread

no borton I never owned it
BUT I watched it being built

and steve wanted to run militaryaxles in it just didn't have teh cash.

and to all of you that think your could build one cheaper that 18k doubt it

ok ok there are some of you hear that could build it for around 13 - 14 and that is about what it cost him - thats including NO labor

and the 208 well its not the best choice but I hammered one for a year and never broke it

I have seen the centipede do obstacles here that no one else in anything have down

and stop to think of all teh rigs I have seen in MOAB

but there is one thing for sure
It always has problems at ARCA
if it ain't one thing its another

?? I dunno

I think you have confused "high center of gravity" with "high profile".

That thing in no way can have more weight up top than anything else in that lineup...

well sense the frame and engine is higher then anything else in that picture I would have to disagree. I think the big downfall is its high CG like I stated above

I think it's cool, i like it better than a lot of other rigs I've seen. I really dont' see anything wrong with it...you all are too harsh sometimes.

exactly

see the thing is the when you lean in a jeep there is alot of metal that is imediatly hanging over the downhill side tire/s

that thing would have a higher center of gravity if it was a wide as a jeep but it ain't

and BTW with 12.50 tires on it the front track width it same as a YJ with 12.50's
plus of mius 1 inch

rear is full width 9 inch

It is also running bigger tires, and more lift... compare apples to apples and then see if your "theory" holds up

OK, As far as costing 13K to build this thing, someone is smoking some serious crack. List off the parts that would cost me that much money. I give it 5-10k MAX!!!!! Tubes, hell you buy in mass quantinty and not too bad. Here is my quote on it

Motor - $1000
Tanny - $1000 (built auto)
208 - $100
Axles (44, 9in) - $1500
Tires - $1000
Rims - $700
odds and ends - $2000

That brings me to $7200 and I was being VERY generous on the parts. IF it was me, I would be able to cut the prices on some of those parts oin half if I was looking for a deal.

I think your missing springs, steering, seats, drivelines, brake hardware, and a radiator. Not to mention the winch and battery(s)

Yup, you can't forget - seatbelts, windshield glass, welding materials, brake lines (hard and rubber), brake pads, calipers, lockers, wheel bearings, seals, motor mounts, tranny mount, shifter, CB, hoses, electrical wiring, tail lights, headlights, guages, speedo, radio...

It's the little things that add up to more than you think at first ;)
