I thought by then the 44 was balljoints. If it's closed knuckle, I'd bet 60.

Ford always used the same brakes on all their models, so the 75 F-250 44 was just like the 60; closed knuckle drum brakes. The open knuckle 44(ball joints) and 60(large kingpin) began in 76, but the 60 was still the less desirable low-pinion. Both had disc brakes. The only trucks that received a Dana 60 front prior to 77.5 were the crew cabs. If you want to do a quick reference, check the size of the cover bolts. A 60 uses 3/8" bolts and takes a 9/16" wrench, a 44 uses 5/16" bolts and takes a 1/2" wrench.

i checked the bolts on the diff cover and they are half inch but i noticed that the steering knuckle has a kingpin setup on the top instead of the normal 44 setup with balljoints.
would it still be a 44.

The closed knuckles all used small king pins top and bottom. The open knuckle 44 went to ball joints, and the open 60 went to a monsterous set of king pins.
