: Groovy 42's!
wngrog 07-06-2002, 03:42 PM Man,
I am Jonesing BAD to finish Kate....so bad that I sat in 100* heat and 98% humidity and grooved (4) 42" TSLs today......
elf_cruiser 07-06-2002, 04:05 PM nice job, did you take a dip in the pool afterwards?? Hey man, i am in AZ now, HELL YEAH!!
coyote 07-06-2002, 04:09 PM Nolen, I still can't figure out how you got those on your Cruiser? The front is a no brainer but the rear has got to stuff bad into the rear fender....did you get the 10 ply or 6 ply, can't remember what you told me before....I'm debating new shoes for the Cruiser but I stuff 36's into my fender fairly well but after I finish my track bar I will check it again and see if I can get 42's, as I need clearance for my 60's......
What did you use to sipe them? I hear you about the heat, I'm working on mine as much as I can stand it to fix her from overheating. How does siping effect the wear of them?
warpdriv 07-06-2002, 07:00 PM Grooooovy man, real groovy...:smokin:

All I did was put a "shorty" Rancho add-a-leaf on my FJ-55 rear springs and cut the hell out of the opening.
The springs get mega negative arch in the rear to the point that I don't even need bumpstops.
Here it is at FULL stuff
coyote 07-07-2002, 09:15 PM How high in the wheel well did you cut the rears? Th negative arch deal isn't too bad but I'm sprung over with 2.5" springs but want 42's but might settle with 38's as my gearing is near perfect without going lower in the axle....as always thanks.....
High5 07-07-2002, 11:12 PM hey i cut one of my 42's today too!!! only thing is i cut mine on a rock out at 360 today and i now have a hole in the side you can stick your finger in!!! not fun when it is a $300 tire and it is only alittle over a month old. oh well i shoved some plugs in her and rode the rest of the day and i have a spare too so.......

Cut until you can't cut no more!! Pretty much cut to the inner fenderwell. SO with 2.5" springs you should be able to fit 42's easily. My 38's fit easily with just a set of stock 55 rear springs. Which is very similar to what Nolen is runing. Except that he has the rancho thick ass add a leafs..
Kyle LePage 07-08-2002, 11:56 AM Nolen, I never heard what you used to get your groove on?

what different ply's did the 42's come in? i looked today and mine say 4.
Medusa 07-08-2002, 06:59 PM Nolen... What blade (width) did you use on your cuts? I am thinking of cutting wider grooves on the big center lugs and narrower ones like yours on the outer and smaller center lugs.
Free... "Siping" refers to cutting very thin grooves, about the thickness of a credit card. What Nolen is doing is true grooving were you are making significant changes to the lugs in order to allow them to flex and deform more.

I am using the 1/2" wide blades that came with the groover.
Hey Mace, what kind of groover is this?
Mace sent me a link and I bought it. It came from a dirt track racing supply!
My groover is basically a hot iron with one blade width and adjustable depth.
On my 38.5's the depth that I am using on the 42's cut all the way to the bottom of the grooves.
On the 42's the groover did not go all the way down...the lugs are too deep.

Click the above link for the groover I have. Also, the site has different size blades.
Mine came with a #5 Jack.
Jason M 07-08-2002, 08:21 PM This is the one that I have.

The cool part was that it came with 12 blades.. Most of them are similar in price.
Looks really good man.
Hmmm, Who wants to trade some 38.5's for some 42's ;)
Kyle LePage 07-08-2002, 09:31 PM :question:I have a set of 36x12.50 SX's that are at just under 50% tread. Would they benefit from removing the "tie in" bars between the tread blocks with one of these tools? What about creating a pattern like Nolen's? I've read that it helps the tire flex over rocks better when the tred blocks are smaller, but is that only for larger tires:question:
Jason M 07-09-2002, 08:18 AM Kyle, Try it.
More biting edges and more flexibility is always a good thing
Plus you might want to turn the blade over and sipe the tires too.

The sipes on my swampers made a HUGE difference in traction. HUGE!!!! :D:D:D:D
Kyle LePage 07-11-2002, 12:19 PM Well, here's the finished product. I gained a 1/4 inch in tread depth overall. The inside lug count went from 62 to 96! I left the outside lugs alone as they are already beat up quite a bit. I didn't want to risk chunk'n them further. I you look close, I kept every other lug stock in hopes they would stay together and last longer. Time will tell:smokin:

Hard drive = bad if you do not have a little red star!!!!!
Send the pics to me and I'll post them...
TxCruzr 07-11-2002, 02:25 PM Hey Nolen...wanna groove my tires too:D
Its a good excuse for you to come down here and crawl...That big FJ with 44s and flame paint job dropped down to 39s or 40s so its a lot more stable and then we've got my short 40 :D
Maybe with this welded rear I can wear em out and get some 36 SX's :D

TxCruzr 07-11-2002, 08:54 PM yeah, he had 33s with front and rear detriots, everything else pretty much stock. He then went up to a SOA with 4inch leafs, 350v8, 44in boggers and a few other things. About a month ago, I guess, he lowered it some and came down to 39in or 40in TSLs.
ChevotaSS 07-12-2002, 08:59 AM where do you guys get the groovers? who has the best price. im looking to groove my 39 swampers. that is unless someone wants to trade 39 swampers for 42's. :D
