I'm wondering if there is a company out there that makes piggy-back style campers that would go on the back of a cab 'n chassis?
Seems like you could have a bunch more space if the bed of the pickup was pulled off and then the camper with a larger than normal footprint was dropped on and bolted up.

They used to build 'em that way, and then they got bigger and bigger, and then they just built them on a van chassis and called them Class C. FWIW.

While not applicable in your particular scenario, I have always dreamed of getting one of those short wheelbase Unimogs (old ones, not the new crap) and having a perfectly flat deck put on it, so you could use a "modular" type system for different needs.
A base camp/living quarters "cube" with stand alone supports that you could just drop the legs and drive out from under, the plain flatbed for small 4x4/bike/snowmobile transport etc., etc.
sigh.

I'm thinking that a nice 4wd 1 ton+ would be a nice platform for the expedition vehicle i'm looking for. Thing is, with the bed on a truck, and then a slide in camper, it seems to be a lot of wasted space...

That sounds like a pretty good idea, and cost-wise wouldn't be that bad. 'Mogs go for under $15,000...
Problem with the 'mog is the low top end, no highway cruising for those things... :(
Too bad though, that's the one drawback, but it's a biggie for everyday use.

There's a company in San Diego that does. I believe it's called Callen Campers. They do a lot of the ones that are put on the Doka Mogs.
EDIT: Here's their website:

Hmmm good idea. Think smaller though, maybe a Toyota PU, no bed, bobbed rails. Slide and drop box, with or without legs. One could be pop up tent (ala Coleman) and the others could be toolboxes, etc.
You can take more than one trip in (or use multiple vehicles).

I'm thinking of turning a 3/4 ton 4x4 Burb with barn doors into a camper. Something like this chop of a Chalet into a burb. It would be permanent. It will still end where the burb ends and not hang off the back. Leaving the stock barn doors for entry. Bunk up over the seats. Kids can sleep on the floor with the back seat folded down. Small kitchen built into the driverside with a small RV fridge. Hinged top like a VW Westfailia. The inside would be like a Dorrmobile land rover
Here is a top similar to what I have in mind.

That's the end result i want, without having the $200,000 price tag.:laughing:
But thanks everyone for the responses, really appreciate all the ideas, and keep 'em coming if you get any new ones!

As nice as that is, the cost is prohibitive. And again, too big to navigate some of the "obstacles" i'm sure to run into...

A friend of mine did that on a bigger U1300L Unimog:

I have a smaller 416 Mog with the same size camper but mine is not removable.

Try a little of this. Reasonably priced and very well built.

I read through every one of the posts in that thread, pretty well thought-through build. ;)
I don't know if he ever posted a total price on it though???

I think he was going to give a complete write-up/price list. I don't have the exact prices, but he has let out a few prices of things and with the price of an Alaskan, it at least gets you into the ballpark.
Say roughly 30-35K on the camper. Just guessing.

What about the Mini Winnie? A little lift, swap in a 4x4 drivetrain and away you go. http://canadatrader.com/result/detailinfo.aspx?stfID=976085&ID=31743666

This is more towards what you're thinking of I think. http://www.schwarze.com/PressReleases/A7UNIMOG.html
I found these though which was cool, although having all of your stuff shift inside wouldn't be cool.
