Its late and I am tired..can someone tell me how I should have my C4 tranny rebuilt for my buggy. First I will be running a 3.8 mustang motor.. Later on I may run a 302 or 351 so i need it to take some abuse..

What stall should I have ..

Any upgrades should I do..

More torque will make the same converter stall higher... so you'll need to buy a "looser" converter for the 3.8, and then change to a "tighter" converter when you drop the V8 in.

Manual valve body, chromo input shaft, 6 pinion planetary, good clutches, steels and bands... you should be able to beat on it for a while.

Look at the parts upgrades that are used in transmissions for drag racing.

EDIT: stall speed is really based on personal preference and rig setup... generally, 1800-2000 would work well in most situations, and would be loose enough to not push the brakes bad in low-low, if you have a doubler or crawler gears.

I feel, much higher than 2000 and you'll have to worry about keeping the trans cool.

It will overwhelm most shops.

Main reason the tranny is soo old. Most shops will do a stock rebuild, you've your work cut out for you to find a good 'local' one. At least for me they will all tell you they do the best job.

There are several basic mods the C4 should have as a standard build. You don't need the 6 planites gears, a Quality C4 build will handle both motors. Follow the link above, best site I've ever read.

I rebuilt my own C4, and suggest it to anyone who can follow directions... that and be diligent with the cleaning! It's holding up nice behind a health 5.0. Make sure you've a gauge and a couple of HUGE coolers.

Absolutely, either find a good builder or read up and do it your self, don't trust it to just any trans shop. I lucked out and ended up using one of the best builders in the country, when my trans was right it was perfect, unfortunately I was still able to screw it up:laughing:
