Ok so my dad has what we believe is a 1968 IH 4door 4x4 1ton? pickup. It has a 392ci engine, 4sp with granny gear and what I believe to be Dana 60's front and rear.
Can anyone tell me what 4sp it has (name ratios, etc) axles (gears, lockers? d60's?, FF? kingpin, etc..) TC (ratio? shafts, etc) and the durability of all the componets.
What are the componets and thier strengths/weaknesses of the above.
I was thinking of possibly swaping it all (minus the engine) or just the axles into my jeep, or will i be better off running a GM d60 front 14bolt rear, sm465, np205 as I originally planned?
Since it is all free, that would leave me $$ to refurbish/upgrade the parts need to make the axles stronger, and everything else ready to be trashed.
Thanks

4 speed is most likely a T98. 6:32:1 1st gear.
Axles should be a D70 closed knuckle front -- IH big azz rear could be an RA-15 (almost ZERO parts avaliable other than seals and stuff).. any ratio from about 4:10 - 6:72 (??). You could get a locker for the rear from the factory (I think) - front is gonna be open.
T-case is either a divorced NP205 or 202.... 2:1 ratio
Everything is bull strong under a stock truck -- not very good for wheeling. And it all weighs a metric shit ton.

None of it will work under your heep  Keep the truck stock and it will be very good to you AS IS :flipoff2:

If you looked at it for even .5 seconds, you would realize its a waste of your time.:shaking:

I say swap like you planned to. That would be an awesome rig. I would search for parts for the frontend already under it. Maybe keep the D70 that is in the front and just swap the rear for a 1 ton GM 14bolt.

or buy a K20 for 300 bucks and swap in entire drivetrain.

You've got to be kidding? a D70 closed knuckle -- what is the turning radius? Something like 2 miles :shaking:
and 40 year old coarse spline axle shafts --- yeah - those will last a long time in a wheeler :barf:

Bob the bed and wheel it.

used 60 c's are cheap, as well as outers. the swap is not hard but the only thing you will gain is a larger ring and pinion then a 60. not worth the effort unless running a high horse motor. the rear RA15 is a brute. no-spin option from the factory. just sold one yesterday. keep the truck stock as your tow rig. :smokin:

Thanks for the input guys. I think im going to stick with my originial chevy drivetrain build idea, and use IH as a tow rig. and then one day swap in rockwells and 49"s for a Top truck rig.
