: Ford 9" swap questions

I'm swappin an HP Dana44 and a ford 9" into my 2000 Ranger.

I know this may be Pirate4x4, but don't give me shit for not goin with a Dana60 and a 14 bolt :flipoff2:

I'm 17 and learning most of this as I go, and I'm trying to do it the right way.

What's the best way to go about swapping in a 9" and keeping the stock 1piece drive shaft?

Part numbers are cool too!

Thanks,
Adam

thats a HUGELY loaded question. too many possible options and ways to do it.

best idea is to spend like a year searching and reading on here. if you know nothing about how to go about it, youve got a long road ahead of you. and that single question is not goin to do you any good. plus youll not likely get a descent answer.
sorry, but its the truth.

Ok, is there a way to use my 8.8" pinion yoke on my 9" ?

I think it might be best to build an 8.8 from an Explorer.

get an adapter u-joint. or get a driveshaft made with that end on it

I've got a heafty mo-fo of a drivehaft in there already. And I already have a geared and locked 9" I got for cheap. And I'd rather keep the 9" because I have a matching D44 up front. So this is what I'm set on.

Any links to any adaptor u jonts?

Well I think that before anyone can give you any helpful advice?
it would be helpful to clue us in on your capabilities?
can you weld and fabricate? how comfortable are you in doing this job?

do you have a auto trans?

Some of my close friends work at local fab and off road shops. I can always resort to them. I've taken basic welding and automotive courses.

I'm trying to not rely on them for every little detail, but when it comes down to the big shit, I've got their help.

I called a local drive shaft shop and they said they can cut off and weld on the new appropriate end.

I've got the original driveshafts from the bronco i parted to get these axles. I'm going to see if one of my fab buddies can fab up a bastard child drive shaft for me

doesn't your 8.8 have a tone ring in it?

Any driveline shop should have or be able to get you a conversion joint for your application.

Hell if I know. I havn't done much work on this be-atch yet. All I've got is a wicked torsion bar crank, and a 3" bl and 35x15.5 swampers. This is the first major process I'm tackeling

here is a link to dana spicer's list of u joints including their conversion u joints:

im just going to take a wild guess and say you may need the 1310 - 1330 but don't rely on that. just find out what the stock u joint is for the ranger, then what the stock u joint is for the vehicle the 9 inch came out of and you should be able to figure it out from there. also make sure that the bearing caps are the right size..

ya I think the conversion joint if from some older t-birds or other large assed cars with a 9" in them. I have it in my explorer, works good. However some 9" did come with 1350 yokes so check first.

great. you need to do more research. That ranger should have a tone ring on the 8.8. putting a nine in the back removes the tone ring. your tranny's going to shift like shit without it.

As for what u-joint it needs. I have never seen or heard of a 1350 u-joint on a stock ford nine. Aftermarket, yes.

Ford used 3 different sizes for u-joints on the nine. 1310, 1330, 1330 with a larger cap, but still smaller than a 1350 series cap.

your ranger is probably a 1310 series u-joint.

where did the 44/9" come from ? what are you planning on doing for a suspension? radius arm front/link rear???

Staggering_Genius

The 44 and 9" came from a 79 Bronco w/ a 400.

I'm planning on using the Bronc. radius arms, coil buckets, shock tower/trac bar mont, and rad. arm drop brackets. I'm in the process of fabbing up a new xmember because the arm brackets are way further back then my tranny x member.

For coils I'll be running Wild Horse 4x4 4.5" Rock Crawler Springs and procomp es3000 shocks.

For the rear I'm not getting too fancy yet. I'll be swapping in a set of 63" Chevy leafs, with the over load leaf pulled and 2" shackles from belltech.

I'll be running F350 BrakeLine extensions.

For steering I'll use a standard crossover system. The ranger ps pump works with the bronco steering box. I'll have to fab a bastard child steering shaft using the stock bronc. steering shaft and the existing ranger shaft. Well, part of it at least.

I don't plan on keeping the ABS. This truck now hardly sees the road and I'm not a big fan of abs off road.

As far as differentials go, the PO had 4.88s installed front and rear and a spool in the rear. Eventually I'll move to 5.13s.

Cutting the IFS x-member out and removing the rack adn pinion steering is gonna be a bitch, but oh well.

As soon as the snowy season clears I'll be ready to get to work!

who cares about ABS, refer to post 22. If you do not do that your trans is not going to shift very well

I read into it. I like the idea of mounting it on the pinion and fabbing a sensor. I've got some stuff to toy with. My friend's neighbor did the swap on an explorer w/ a 4.0L and an 8.8"

I'm headin there tomorrow to see just what the hell he did.
