: Dont ever buy a Ryobi chop saw!!!!
jeeper111 07-06-2002, 08:45 PM I was using it today to cut some 3/8 plate and the damn thing quit working. This is the second saw in like 4 months that has quit working on me. I dont have my rciet anymore but I am going to go down and bitch to the people at Home depot and hope they will let me switch to a porter cable or I hate to say it but I think even a dewalt would be better than this piece ofr crap.
P.S. Just picked up a brand new millermattic 210 yesterday and man does it blow my old 110 chicago electric away. Just had to tell someone.:D :smokin:
Miller = GOOD Ryobi = BAD:flipoff2:
Tx Outlaw 07-06-2002, 08:51 PM Dunno if you know (or care) but Porter Cable use to be the company known as Rockwell.
Just some info for ya.
jeeper111 07-06-2002, 08:59 PM well thats all the better then. I think that I have had the dana 35 of chop saws up until this point.
Priest 07-06-2002, 09:14 PM It sounds like you don't like Dewalt but I ended up going with a DW871 and it cuts like a champ. With a 5.3hp motor it was the largest one that I could find. I paid $189 from tyler tool online with free shipping. Someone said that this is also the saw that TinBender uses at his shop and he hasn't killed one yet.
Here are some specs.
Amps 15.0 AC/DC amps, Horsepower 5.3 HP, No Load Speed 3,800 rpm, Spindle Lock ,Quick Lock Vise , Wheel Arbor 1", Wheel Diameter 14" , Max Capacity (Round) 5" ,Max Capacity (Rectangular) 4-1/2" x 6-1/2" , Tool Length 21 ", Tool Weight 40.0 lbs
ROCK HUGGER 07-06-2002, 09:43 PM I also have a Ryobi, it is a pile of krap:mad3:
I have been nursing it along for severall years but I dont like it.
Toyota_Jim 07-06-2002, 09:54 PM I bought the dewalt multi cutter with the free blade!
badassjeepguy 07-06-2002, 10:23 PM i have the home depot life time garunteed RIGID............... it works flawlessly........... maybe theyll work a deal for it
elf_cruiser 07-06-2002, 10:45 PM HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!
That thing blows chunks. I'm not surprised after i blew it up the first time. All i was doing was cutting 1" plate, i mean c'mon what a POS!!!
Good Luck, see ya in moab!
P.S. - Phoenix Rules!
moveaside 07-06-2002, 10:57 PM Come on man you trying to get mad at home depot? You were in the store comparing the different brands and specs and said yup the Ryobi is the one I want cause it was cheaper than the others. You got what you paid for. No lie its crap its for cutting drywall and the weekend home fixer guy not for cutting out metal in a rig. Oh well hope the new one lasts good luck
orbitcat 07-06-2002, 11:00 PM I must have the only working one that they made. I have had my Ryobi 14" chop saw for about three years. I've cut just about everything with it and have used it hours on end. I chose it over the others because it had a cast base. I have not had a day of trouble with it.
I'm knocking on wood right now though.
jeeper111 07-06-2002, 11:05 PM Actually it was the same price at the time but I didnt know that it was junk at the time. I think that they were out of the dewalt ones when I was there before so I just went ahead and got the one that looked like it would work. Unfortunately it is the crapiest tool I have ever bought. If they dont take it back, is there a way to fix it. I was cutting with it fine and it started to hesitate for a second. I stopped and then came back to it and it wouldn't start again. I would say over heating but it was only used for a short time. Any ideas?

Its dying let it go in peace or use a BFH on it to put it out of its misery and then go tear those guys at Home Depot a new ass why they can't keep things in stock. Ask them what kind of margin they make on air! None now stop flirting with the other employees and do some work and stock those shelves. Get em kick some ass:laughing:
Benny 07-06-2002, 11:51 PM You seriously need to calm down. There is no need to go in there bitching at the people.
Simply take the saw up to the counter and tell them you bought the saw 4 months ago and it quite working. No receipt needed. They will give you an In-Store Credit instead of cash though. Just take the card and go buy a Delta with it.
Actually, I didnt see the Delta there last week. And I dont see it in the Pro-Book. So you may be getting the Milwaukee. Its $188 and the Ryobi is $149. The delta Was $199.
Get this instead. I just go one and I love it. ;)

moveaside 07-07-2002, 12:10 AM Ya that'll work too. Just kidding anyhow I managed at a Wal-mart I always get my way at the returns desk receipt or not you just have to be polite and calm. Yet never agree to what they want to do. By the way I got a Ryobi too never had any problems though:beer: good luck to you maybe you should build your own chopsaw with a chainsaw motor of something.
BornInAJeep 07-07-2002, 07:43 AM I don't like chop saws, i've got a, well i have no idea what the hell it's called, but it's like a horizontal bandsaw. cuts 90's, and miters, not as fast as a chop saw, but WAY more accurate.

TONY K 07-07-2002, 10:16 AM I gotta say, I love my bad saw. Had a porta-band first and thought if was great until I bought a regular band saw. Quiet, fast, super straight. All I do is cut tube all day long. best $ 269.00 I've spent.
It's kinda funny how friends with a chop saw will never switch. Why do guys love chop saw sooooo much?
Anyone else used both? what did you think?

Rudezuk 07-07-2002, 10:39 AM I have the Milwakee chop saw.............Works awesome!!! Used it almost everyday now for almost a year............Awesome!!!
My Ryobi 14" chop saw has been cutting anything I pay in front of it since 1995.... Only problem I have is overloading the circuits in the garage at times :p
Milwaukee portable deep-cut band saw is kinda handy too :cool2:
Maine Jeepah 07-07-2002, 01:33 PM I have the 14" Ryobi, and I bought it BECAUSE it was cheap.
I've cut everything up to 1/2" plate with it no problems.
Only reason I don't have a RIGID one is they were out of stock (go figure) and the Milwoaukee one was too expensive as I recall.
Like the others said if you bought it there and its crap bring it back and get a credit...most stores nowadays are pretty good with that although I seem to recall my local HD is getting militant about reciepts.
FWIW these cheap chop saws arent made to cut heavy stuff constantly...metal cutting band saws are for that.
:D
MJ
Got my Makita 14", 15A, at Home Depot 3 yrs back for $119, never had a problem with it, still cutting like mad...
I've had a Jepson (the folks who make the Milwaukee saw ) 14" chop saw for years...... never had a problem
RHINO 07-07-2002, 03:59 PM i wish someone woulda told me the ryobi was crap when i bought mine 8 years ago, to think all these trouble free years of cutting with a junk machine, what was i thinking??
oh and i have a bandsaw too, but i find the chopsaw to work better on tube type stuff and the bandsaw for solid and REAL thick material where the chopsaw would just build too much heat.
i think the power tools nowadays are just getting cheaper and you end up spending alot on a machine that lasts. i basically try to stay away from plastic and cast mystery metals.

ChevyGal 07-07-2002, 07:39 PM The older Ryobi things I have and use are decent enough and I actually like them... but I have used some of the newer stuff here and there for some of the volunteer projects my church does and my gosh they are really crappy. I personally broke two 12v cordless drills some people brought. They would lock up and the plastic would break inside when I was drilling into some stucco on homes to put up grab bars by steps....... funny how the Makita tore it up and worked fine and fast! :)

I saw that out at Tommy's last time I was there :D They sell them ( maybe not as good as that one) at Tractor Supply for about $200. I was thinking of getting one.

jeeper111 07-07-2002, 09:05 PM Just went down today and bought a band saw at tractor supply. I will use that for tube and things and I think thyat it will be more acurate but I am going tomorrow to give the chop saw back and get a credit so I can upgrade to the milwakee since you guys seem to think that it is better. I would definitely like to have both tools because the band saw will only cut up to a 45 degree angle but the chop saw will go further if you hold the metal or clamp it down in some way. Thanx for the advice. :smokin:
BadDog 07-07-2002, 10:35 PM I've got a cheap HF chop saw and small band saw that do ok (so far) for what I need. I love having the choice between them, depending on what I need. If the chop saw dies, I’ll probably be looking for a “Rigid” replacement at HD (based on what I see here).
However, I really wish I could find something that would do compound angles. I just had to notch a piece of 1.75 round tube to fit over the corner of a piece of 2" square tube. Basically like a tube fish mouth but with a sharp corner in the bottom to fit the square tube. All these tools and I had to use a 4.5" angle grinder with cut-off wheel to make those 2 cuts. Not a big deal but, it would have been quicker and neater to have something that would cut on a compound angle. My cuts weren’t exact and required quite a bit of grinding. Something where I could cut in on a 45 and stop half way through, roll it over, and cut the other side, would have been perfect…
ToyFamily 07-07-2002, 10:42 PM For about the last 5 years I've been using my Black & Decker miter electric saw with a metal cutting blade instead of wood. It has worked great. My son bought a Milkawki (bad spelling) about 2 years ago and it has held up well unfortuanely he has it at his shop and not mine. Now (for the last 2 months) I've been using a plasma cutter that I bought for a really good price. The Black & Decker and cutting torch have been gathering dust since.
Good luck at Home Depot!

dumplin 07-08-2002, 01:27 AM I just bought a Makita saw and it came w/ 5 discs , paid $179 total . Also met Ms. Makita in the process ,woohoo ! Have a buddy w/ the same saw and has used it in a commercial setting and no problems . :flipoff2:
4x4junkie 07-08-2002, 04:43 AM Maybe Ryobi has some quality control issues (or changed designs or something).
I have one thats not had any problems at all (even abusing the thing trying to cut a piece of 3/8 wall 3" tubing to the point of the motor getting that "hot" odor). I bought it about 3 years ago.
It does seem a bit underpowered, though.
cbassett 07-08-2002, 08:40 AM Like Orbitcat and DRM, I am thoroughly pleased with my Ryobi 14" chop saw. It's a few years old, so like 4x4Junkie said, maybe Ryobi is under more "efficient" manufacturing processes now.:(
My chop saw has built 4 complete suspensions, multiple cages, bumpers, tire carriers, you name it, the thing will not die. It does blow my cheesy-ass ciruit in the garage now and then. :D
slorunner 07-08-2002, 12:03 PM The first Ryobi 14" Chop Saw I had shot sparks out of the motor and then Died:nuke: after only 20 seconds of cutting. Took it back to HD and traded it for a new one. Has worked flawless ever since (knock on wood) Their Quality control must be pretty lax.:usa:
Grizzly 07-08-2002, 01:00 PM Ryobi?? Boy if this were piratetools.com you get laughed out. I understand the temptation to save a buck or two like tools in every trade you eventually learn whats good and whats not. Ryobi is light duty home owner grade at best.
DeWalt provides alot for the money, but Makita, Milwaukee, Porter Cable, Bosch and the like are the way to go
Grim Reaper 07-08-2002, 01:38 PM Cheap peice of crap $49 Harbor frieght job. Little low on HP but it does the job. I don't mess with much over 1/4 inch box. Getting through the flat side have to be carefull not to tool harden. It was worth the $49 for the little crap I do.
I want to get one of tha band saws in the future. My bud has the harbor unit for $179. It takes it's time but it does a good job and never seems to whine about it. Saw an even nicer unit with a built in oiler at Northern. Didn't catch the price but it was a few notches above the Harbor unit. I bet it's more in the $250 or so range.
Ohhhhh Little low on the price. I think this is the one they had in the local store. Little expensive for me but 7 x 12 capacity :)

It's supposed to be - "out the ass"

jeeper111 07-08-2002, 07:08 PM If anyone is :rainbow: here bud its you. Keep talking and Ill drive over your truck in moab. HAHAHAHAHA!!!!
Anyway I went and bought the tractor supply clark metal worker band saw and it is a bitch to put together but it seems to work allright. I needed it for control arms anyway.
I went back to HD today and they gave me store credit just like you guys said. I went strait to the tool section and got the milwakee version. It was only another 30 or so bucks but I can already tell that its heavier duty. :D
Thanx for helping a fellow wheeler out! to you guys

I work at the Home Depot and I just put that Ryobi saw back on the shelf, with the box all nicely re-taped back up. I like selling them twice. :flipoff2:
