What should i look for on a 1995 discovery to make it as pleasureable as possible.

I drove it today, front is a little floaty, it has 210 on the ticker but ran like a top it had a little oil on the bottom of the motor, which would be expected. It had an ABS light on and a none working fuel gauge. All windows, sunroof's, etc work. It's about 1500$.

I have a mechanical background so i am not to worried about some wrench time, i just wanted to see if there were any reasons not to buy one, what major things to check.

Thanks guys!

it is probably worth 1500. i have a 95 and it is a pretty solid running rig. but as a dd, it sucks the gas. and it is a dog. and you can't really tow with it.

but hey it is after all a LAND ROVER!

i wouldn't get it.

Me neither. I have a 96 and buying it was the best and worst decision I've ever made. And I've been married twice.

a 95 is probably one of the best fawking years going.

No GEMS
much better engine system.

and is very simple to work on. I have a 96 and while I love the bitch the engine management kinda sucks but I do all changes and service intervals and she keeps going.

all I can say is the Disco is a Durable truck. keep on the repairs and she'll last a long time.

I can't really think of a reason not to buy one.
well unless one has a big ass family
and don't want to pay big at the pump or work on a vehicle.

otherwise than that a Disco to me is a good choice.

Huge Strong Chassis
full-floater axles
Body on Frame build
low gear T-case
Suspension flexes pretty good stock
Aluminum Body

In looking at a 95, your should look for one that says "TOYOTA" on the front and "Land Cruiser" on the back.

YMMV

Bah! My '95 has 223K miles on it. Only complaint I have is I wish I'd paid more attention to the rust.

It'll be ninety billion in the midwest in august, but it'll be humid here -- and where PT is.

I actually agree -- keep up on the maintenance and they're fine vehicles, if a little wierd. And not having GEMS is nice, I'd bet.

Bah - GEMS gets a worse rap then it deserves...

My '96 has never had a GEMS problem, no matter how hard I beat on it. Maybe it's all that premium gas that's been run through it instead of BillyBob brand 82 octane Mexi-gas. Everything else has broken on it, but never a GEMS related part.

thats true, however it gets pretty humid here during the monsoons in august as well...but i don't think it is quite as bad as the midwest and deep south:smokin:

Im in a similar situation, but a bit late to ask. I just bought a 97 with 147k on it for my wife yesterday. I know they are durable, but how good are they? Im not too sure about my wife going off road in it (she thinks its too pretty) but she used to in her cherokee and in my grand cherokee. there are some minor repair issues needed with mine, but i think i can handle it (replace a cat, seat motor, seatbelts, bulbs) but there is a constant squeeking coming from the belt, on the pasanger side, I have not really looked too deeply into it yet, but the belt seems tight. WD40 on the tensioner pully? This is the first non-domestic vehicle i have owned... Ok, dont laugh at me.. if it were a jeep ii would have half of it apart by now, but i am alittle intimidated buy the engineering of this. I see above there ia alot mentioned about '95s & '96s what about '97??? whats good or bad about that year? anything serious too look out for? I have always used 20W50 oil in engines over 100k, what about doing that with this one?

Replace the belt first.

This truck has a '63 Buick engine in it. Dino oil of 10W30 is fine for it.

Buick??? ugh.. ok i'll deal. I guess I have alot to learn abou these quirky vehicles. Maybe I should have my wife give it its first tune up (with some guidance). I made her do it on my comanche! Im not looking to do any major modifications on it, but i do want it to last, and use it to teach the wife about doing some 'wheelin so that we can go out in both vehicles as something the whole family can do.

no problem. Easy to work on. Just rethink and get past the Jeep knowledge you have. Get a rave CD and start wrenching:D

PT will answer anything just ask him:flipoff2: He's helped me a time or two

Generic Engine Management System. An early Bosch fuel injection management system, the first distributor-less EMS in a Rover. Usually bulletproof except for the occasional CkPS failure.

I own both a 96 and 97. My 97 seems to have a much better fuel map than the 96.
