: csb carb fire!!!
lumberjack52 02-16-2008, 06:28 PM ya so this is what i have! 69-79 csb? going in a jeep. i have a mechanical fuel pump(new), 1405 edelbrock carb(new) HEI(old), and older heads that dont mach the block, supposed to be better, so im told! anyways, i got #1 cylinder to TDC, placed the #1 terminal off the cap to the #1 plug wire, and hooked everything else accordingly! after a few attemps of turning the engine over, a fire started in the carb! ya let me tell you, i wasent ready for that!!! so i figures i would turn the distributor a litlle, and the same result. so i turned it as far as it would go clockwise, and the same thing! so i turned it counter clockwise as far as it would go, and it fired right up, but i could still see gass misting out of the carb??? so i said fuck it i musta mest up TDC somewhere???? so i repeated the same process of TDC, and..............got the same results? so now im stumped? i dunno if its the carb or the timing, also had a freind tell me that the pressure of the fuel pump is ajustable with spacer plates and i might be getting to much pressure to the carb? but that doesent sound right to me? so now im here asking for som advise so i dont burn my house down, thanks
Filthy McChevy 02-16-2008, 06:55 PM Make sure your plug wires are on the distributor right? HEI is 1 off from a points distributor. Is this a new build or a running motor out of something else? Lifters primed? Valves adjusted? Are you watching your timing marks on the harmonic balancer when you first line it all up? Edelbrocks always need a inline fuel pressure regulator. Theres some basics for you.
lumberjack52 02-16-2008, 08:20 PM ya this is a running motor, the valves were deff backed off for the motor to sit so we just adjusted them, plug wires are deff right 3 times over! idunno about the lifters tho? this is my first build so im kinda learning as i go, but have some local help, but nobody said anything about primim=ng the lifters? i do have oil pressure, and when i got it to TDC the 0 mark was alligned perfectally and the harmonic ballancer, i do have an inline regulator, but its not hooked up. i had a ford with mechanical fuel pump and there wasent a pressure control in it so i didnt think one was needed, as was as the chilton doesent say anythiong about it either?
Grumpy_old_fart 02-17-2008, 12:05 AM sounds like either the float is stuck in the carb, or you have junk in the jets and its overflowing.
clean out the carb.
if it runs, you got something right. if you have too much fuel, check float levels.
as for "points being one off from HEI", someone is smoking crack. the firing order is the same, between the two. It honestly doesnt matter where you put the #1 plug wire on the distributor, as long as the rotor lines up to it when it fires. from that point, follow the firing order. 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2
or... 6-5-7-2-1-8-4-3...
or...
you could sandpaper the asshole of an aligator in a phone booth.
look this isnt rocket science.keep a wet shop rag handy, a cloth one. if and when the carb catches fire, throw the wet rag at it. dont miss. pound it out with a hat. or a towel.
fire goes out. dont let your fear of flame keep you from working on things.
fix the floats.:shaking:
Filthy McChevy 02-17-2008, 07:38 AM Call me superstitious but I line up my plug wires by the book. :homer:
Any updates?

I line mine up so i get the most adjustability out of the distributor.
some intakes leave you wanting more advance as the runner gets in the way of the vacuum advance canister.
think outside the book.
lumberjack52 02-17-2008, 11:35 AM yep u are right on the money! i was thinking about that last night, and found TDC again pointing the rotor at the #8 piston and it gave me more timing advance, and she ran like a champ! oh yeah with her purring straight out of the headers, its kinda loud!
lumberjack52 02-17-2008, 11:36 AM i was wondering tho, if this has any possabillity that i have an aftermarket cam? or any other doodads?
Grumpy_old_fart 02-17-2008, 05:13 PM did you break in the cam correctly?
lumberjack52 02-17-2008, 06:14 PM well i didnt think i had to since the motor has already been running befor i bought it? but could be totally wrong
