Im having problems with my 89 Ford Bronco. I put it in reverse and I get a major grinding sound. So I swapped in a new trasmission with a shift kit and I still am getting the grinding sound in reverse, it did work a few times going in reverse then it just started to grind again. I had a "motorhead" friend of mine take a look at everything and we both came to the conclusion that it has to be something in the transfer case.

I have a push button transfer case and am wondering if something could be messed up with that motor on the back of the transfer case causing the grinding?

I have a manual shift transfer case, I was going to swap it in but it has the wrong output shaft for the rear driveshaft (spline vs yoke).

Any ideas of what I should check in to?

Maybe it's not rotating far enough. If you take the shift motor off you can shift it manually with a pair of pliers. give that a try and see what happens.

Sounds like the xfer case is junk. You can swap the output sections. The BW13-56 has a small problem with wearing out and jumping out of gear. I dunno 100% what causes it -- some blame worn shift forks, some blame oil pump failure. All I know is that mine junked the entire gearset.

One other observation, we opened the T-Case yesterday and found all the fluid to be burned.

I was wondering if it could be that shift motor, it sounds as if it is just not moving quite enough. I will give your idea a shot tonight Paul. Is the motor something I could pick up at the local NAPA?

I would prefer to swap out this automatic T-Case for my manual one, but how involved is changing the rear output sections?

Tore the transfer case apart and found a shift fork chewed up and one of the gears. Not sure where I am going to get new parts from.

Um.... how about that other t-case laying on the floor?

Sounds like a perfect time to break both of them down, swap parts back and forth, and put a manual case under your truck.

I was thinking about swapping the parts but I just wasnt sure how to go about doing it. Any places on the net that show it or can anyone describe it, maybe I could take pictures through the whole process and post them somewhere so it could be on the net if it isnt.

I would prefer a manual shift t-case, I just dont trust all that electronic B.S.
