: Ultimate Webwheeler Challenge
scwafish 07-07-2002, 04:35 PM Me and Poppy have agreed that it is time for us both to stop posting and get wheeling. Both of our projects have been going for over a year and enough is enough.
The Challenge...we both show at SOR with our rigs running and ready for action.
If only one shows, they win.
If we both show, the better rig wins.
If we both show, and both rigs work well....WE RULE!
nuttzack 07-07-2002, 04:43 PM I know this has been asked a million times scaw, but when is SOR? I know its august sometime. I am gonna try to get mine back together for it, but it's kinda tough one handed. I just realized someone else is gonna have to answer this question cause you'll be working on your rig:flipoff2: Good luck
scwafish 07-07-2002, 05:09 PM Aug. 8-11 I believe, you bringing that bad boy down? Got a LOT done on the rig today...been at it since early this morning. I'm gonna get it done in time.
Toywagon 07-07-2002, 05:17 PM Scwa,
It is still very much allowable however, to post pics of your progress yes??

Tusker 07-07-2002, 08:39 PM It is about time for the "driveway queens" to duel :D :D . Seriously, I gotta see these two go at it. Should be awesome! Get wrenchin guys.
zuk88 07-07-2002, 09:06 PM Hell, I'll hangout at Spider Lake until Saturday just to see those two go at it in the box.
scwafish 07-07-2002, 09:12 PM So Poppy's got me beat in the big rubber department, hows the engine coming along....mine is ready to play!
scwafish 07-07-2002, 09:19 PM The detail is insane.... look at the custom chopped, extended and gusseted double thow-down throttle cable stop...
scwafish 07-07-2002, 09:20 PM The madness continues with the fast and furious intake...
M.Martian 07-07-2002, 09:45 PM So if neither of your rigs show, does that mean you guys have to walk and we get to throw you into Spider? :D
poppycock 07-08-2002, 01:42 AM hehehe ok so your engine looks a little better than whats under my hood. :flipoff2: i gotta go replace a couple seals still and get a flywheel.
scwafish 07-09-2002, 05:26 PM Finished my bumps stops and ps today...a few things off of the list :D
bobaki 07-09-2002, 05:58 PM Hey swaydude you got any pics of the rig more than a mile away from home???????????:D
poppycock 07-09-2002, 05:58 PM i havn't even seen my truck since this thread was started. :D
scwafish 07-09-2002, 07:26 PM Bobaki-I need taillights or I'd venture out of the sacred valley.
Poppy-I'm headed back out to the garage...better head to the hood and get this battle goin'!

Wilson 07-12-2002, 10:04 PM I should be up there that weekend in the yota. I mentioned it to my room mate "project super sami", he'll definitely want to go now. I didn't know SOR was that weekend.
incontrol 07-14-2002, 11:25 AM Neither one will do squat....It's been so long since they wheeled, they both back to newbie status. :D :D

scwafish 07-14-2002, 03:42 PM Geez Incontrol...I thought you were on my side:D Ever figure out what to do about your cab?
scwafish 07-14-2002, 03:52 PM Ok Incontrol...whats with all of the tape? Leak? Gonna have yours fixed by SOR so you can show us how its done???
bobaki 07-14-2002, 05:48 PM Both are great WEB WHEELER's........:D
scwafish 07-15-2002, 03:10 PM Cooling system is a go...idled the rig in my garage with 95+ degree weather for almost an hour and the e-fan held it to 175-180 easily....sorry Bobaki but I went crazy and put in a guage with #'s. Still want to get the OEM temp. unit working right though. Its really fawking hot here this week!!!
bobaki 07-15-2002, 06:24 PM ALL GOOD......:D knew you would opt for flash when we talked

The highway patrol objectioned to have the windshield blowing around on the freeway.
Unfortunately, I have been having a hell of a time to find a cab, roof or a windshield frame. But as soon as I do, I'll get it ready. So in the mean time I'm making rear disk brake caliper brackets. You know, the exact opposite direction from what needs to be done.
bobaki 07-15-2002, 07:00 PM DO THE NEEDFULL JIM........:D
incontrol 07-15-2002, 07:23 PM Yes, I do have needful things........
scwafish 07-15-2002, 07:27 PM I have been having a hell of a time to find a cab, roof or a windshield frame.
That sucks...I'll keep my eyes open. Exta cab obviously, does it need to be red, or will you paint one if needed.
knew you would opt for flash
Gauges that tell you something....very flashy  Actually I used Jason's 2 5/8 gauge trick and it was an easy install and it looks great.
scwafish 07-15-2002, 07:43 PM All you need to do to put gauges in is use 2 5/8 gauges and the push into the stock holes for the central vents and clock. The wiring for the clock has an ignition hot, headlight hot and an ground. All you have to do is run wires to the senders, and a common engine ground. Simple.

That's what I did. except all my autometers are broke:( I guess I'll try the fancy liquid filled ones next time.
bobaki 07-16-2002, 10:50 AM webwheeler's don't need the liquid filled ones they just take it easy when they get to the end of the drive ........:D driveway that is

FAAAwlk you! I don't drive it, I push it to the end of the driveway... so I can mount up my bender:( :flipoff2:
scwafish 07-16-2002, 11:55 PM Finished welding the cage tonight...not much left to do...Poppy??? Hows it going on your end.
poppycock 07-17-2002, 02:00 AM :( waiting on longfields and hydro steer... still gotta do driveline mods, front shocks, exhaust, brake lines, fuel lines, electrical, stop the leaks in the engine, get a clutch, and figure what i'm gonna do for floors... but i got it under control :flipoff2: the poppy shop is :smokin: this week.
scwafish 07-17-2002, 06:43 AM I'm picking up my second try at new rear springs today and a longer tie rod, need to finish trimming the tunnel, bolt the body down, add a rear bumper and thats it! Hope to shake it down at cow Friday or Saturday.
bobaki 07-18-2002, 08:58 AM Poppy ,swayboy is getting more posts than you .....come up......:D
scwafish 07-18-2002, 09:07 AM New rear springs are in and they are way better! New tie rod is also in! Also finished the gauges...starting to make killer progress...woohoo!
poppycock 07-18-2002, 12:52 PM what springs are you using scwa? get away without a traction bar in the rear?
scwafish 07-18-2002, 05:48 PM I had stock cjs and a sami overload, but the overload was just "teetering" on the bottom of the cj pack making lots of wrap and bending the cj pack in weird ways. I tried a set of Superlift 1" cj springs but they were really stiff and longer than stock which messed up my shackle angle and I lost a bunch of flex. Now I'm trying a 1" Rancho pack and they fit a lot better.
I would like to add a traction bar, but it will have to wait until after SOR...not enough time.
poppycock 07-19-2002, 03:36 AM took some pics today... it's close... we'll see what happens :D
(the mini van is for sale ;) )

scwafish 07-19-2002, 07:41 AM I was hoping to test today or tomorrow, but I don't think I'll make it...maybe Monday. Things are going good though so far....giving the tub a little love before I bolt it all the way down...some minor rust that needs to be fixed and more tunnel trimming. I will finish the tub today.
scwafish 07-20-2002, 04:19 PM Tub is in place, all of the mounts are in place, all of the remaining rust is fixed and the tunnel trimming is @ 100% complete....I have fiberglass in my lungs and arms, spark burns on my head....damn that feels good!!!
I start final assembly this evening, should only take a few hours.
incontrol 07-20-2002, 07:24 PM Originally posted by scwafish

UHHHHHH. Pictures?
scwafish 07-20-2002, 10:02 PM I'll post pics as soon as the bbs is happy...any luck with a cab? What years do you need...I'm going to the local boneyard on Mon.
incontrol 07-21-2002, 10:25 AM Just got back from Arkansas. Did some calling around and found that as lon as I don't want a front clip, I can find a bunch of them.
BTW. the fishing was great.
incontrol 07-21-2002, 10:26 AM Not to mention. You can always email me.
Roksamy 07-21-2002, 12:24 PM good looking rig , i've got a red headed stepchild similar to it!
scwafish 07-26-2002, 02:27 PM Poppy:
Hows it going????? I just finished everything except a rear bumper...bending that up at Incontrols in SR tomorrow. I'm gonna make it baby!!!!!!!!!
incontrol 07-28-2002, 10:52 AM Now SCAWFISH has a back bumper. :D :D
Sarcastro 07-28-2002, 02:56 PM Poppy where did you get yer seats?
incontrol 07-28-2002, 03:45 PM HELLO POPPYCOCK
poppycock 07-28-2002, 05:32 PM well i would have made it.... but i spent all my money on a new tow rig. :D my buggy is pretty much done except for driveline mods, hydro steer, floors, and some other little things.
incontrol 07-28-2002, 07:35 PM :shaking:
scwafish 07-28-2002, 08:17 PM Like Incontrol said...we got the bumper done yesterday. Incontrol did a sweet job and major thanks to him for all of the hard work and the tube bending.
As far as the "webwheeler" challenge goes, I'm diqualified... since I returned to the realm of the "actual" wheeler today. Me and my son drove the rig down the road and played at Cow Mountain for a few hours.
All in all the rig worked well, plenty of flex, great traction, and insane turning radius. About the only thing wrong is the motor isnt making quite as much power as it should. The check engine light is on, need to get the codes read.
The cops even ignored our rig going down the road with rubber hanging out, no glass, and no mirrors.
Pics...just a couple
incontrol 07-29-2002, 10:59 AM It poses and it wheels.

poppycock 07-29-2002, 02:38 PM i bet your happy scwa. that looks sweeeet! excellent work and congradulations on your promotion to real world wheeler. makes me want mine done even more now.
scwafish 07-29-2002, 04:21 PM Poppy-Felt great to actually get out and go wheeling in my own rig. I have to leave for Colorado on Fri. and don't come back until SOR so I don't know if I'll get my motor figured out by then, but I'm stoked as heck its a runner. If I don't make SOR I'll be on the con soon.
Whats your status? No chance of getting it going? What did you get for a tow rig?
poppycock 07-29-2002, 06:22 PM i don't think mine is going to be done in time. theres just to much work and not enough time. lots of little things left... lots. tow rig is a cherry 87' ford f-250 with 51k miles on it. has the the supercab, longbed, 4 speed, and 6.9l diesel... it's getting a turbo asap.
somone21 07-29-2002, 07:37 PM Hey Scwa how did your gears feel on the rocks?
MuddMachine 07-29-2002, 09:10 PM Hey Scwa, sweet ride you got there  Love those beadlocks, I'd love to have a set but with our dollar bein worth about 15 cents U.S. it'll cost me a fortune, oh, i stand corrected, the ole lady says 12 cents U.S. lol, hope you enjoy that ride (i would) :flipoff2:
scwafish 07-29-2002, 09:52 PM Hey Scwa how did your gears feel on the rocks?
The 110:1 experience was buzz-killed by the unhappy motor. It creeps awesome but was stalling under a load that even Tuskers motor ( a legendary :bender: of a unit ) would have plowed through.
I spoke with Brent at TT today and he was damn helpful. I read my codes with a paperclip and a notepad and it says I've got trouble with my MAF and VSS. You gotta love this modern shit...I knew the speedo wasnt working but now I just need to figure out whats wrong with the MAF.
incontrol 07-29-2002, 10:12 PM Hopefully the MAF came with a "AKI" warranty. :D :D

Hmm.. That raises an interesting question. What speed do you want the VSS to see? I can hook mine up to my tranny, or the back of the t-case. I was tending to lead towards the tranny as it also controls the 4 speed auto, but I have seen other swaps where the automatic really gets confused when in low range.. I'm open to suggestions on this one.
Scwafish, you also mentioned you have a great turning radius? You are running the Toyota front end with birfs, is this correct? I am expecting to loose turning radius with the Toyota axles on mine. Please expand.
Glad you got that sucker running. Those 16 valves can take a little playing around to get them going. I have 3 friends that run those in their Zuks, and they do kick butt once you get them ironed out. You might want to look into the late model distributors. Coil is in the distributor, and I'm told it has made a nice improvement. (Brent is a good source on this one also.)
Also, if you suddenly loose power, and or the engine will occasionally not start, the common problem is the ECU. Petroworks is a good place to fix that one. Other then that, they are very reliable little engines.
Interesting side note. When we went to buy a distributor cap for the coil less distributor, we were lucky, as the local PepBoys had one in stock. When we opened the Borg Warner (I think) box, we discovered it had a Suzuki OEM bagged part inside. Borg Warner tried to put a sticker over the Suzuki sticker but missed. The funny thing was it cost less then Suzuki sells them for. :)

scwafish 07-29-2002, 10:59 PM Warranty not incruded...It may just be the harness. TT spliced the MAF and ATS connectors into the harness, might be a bad butte connector? I don't know what a MAF sells for, but if its over $5 (and it has the look of an expensive doo-hickey), I can't afford it at the moment.
scwafish 07-29-2002, 11:04 PM You are running the Toyota front end with birfs, is this correct?
The front axle is an Allpro d44 hybrid with custom knuckles, and it turns like a beotch.
I think the VSS just need to tell the computer its moving, its an on/off not a variable thing....at least thats what I understand. I have a custom toy to zuk extended speedo cable and its all hooked up but isnt working, I need to look into it.

Have you checked this connection yet? What makes you question the harness?

Ahh, the hybrid. Guess that explains the hubs.
The VSS is a actually a variable device that tells the computer how fast the vehicle is going. I think it gives out something like 1024 pulses per MPH. (I'm probably off on this as it has been a while.) Actually, that doesn't sund right at all. Anyhow, the Suzuki and Mazda vehicles use the same VSS set up. A small reed switch tucked up into the speedometer. A little maganet swings by, and makes a pulse. The faster it is going, the more pulses. The computer reads the pulses to figure out the speed, and adjust the engine and tranny (if automatic) as needed.

scwafish 07-30-2002, 04:48 PM What makes you question the harness?
When TT adapts the 16v harness to a sami they splice in the multi-plug for the MAF with butte connectors. Butte connectors have let me down a time or two.
Pappa Smurf 07-31-2002, 11:11 PM in the throttle picture are those dual mikuni carbs
scwafish 08-01-2002, 06:51 AM Nope, just the throttle for a 16v heavily modified to use a stock sami cable.
You prolly already know this but if your motor revs when you ease on the gas but not when you boot it and or bogs on anything unless you're really slow on the gas then you've got a MAF problem. Check the connection right at the MAF, these are known to be troublesome (I chased a problem for 3 months before finding that a simple wiggle at this connection "solved" my problem). I'd be reluctant to blame the VSS as the vehicle (unless it's an auto) will run pretty well without it. In fact I ran mine without one and even passed the sniffer. Your ride can't live without the MAF though. If you don't have or have access to the Suzuki tech training manual on "Electronic Engine Management" is the best place for diagnosing and testing all of your sensors and their inputs. It also has the infamous pulses per Mile figure in it. The VSS will make your truck run better (bogs less during shifts, increases fuel efficiency and helps in the emissions dept.) but it isn't necessary to get "normal" power from your motor.
Oh, and although you guys probably didn't notice, I'm back from a couple month long hiatus from the board. I'd like to thank Web Wheelers Anonymous (WWA) in helping me with the addiction recovery process. O BTW :flipoff2:

Rudezuk 08-01-2002, 10:53 AM SCWA, I have been running for a year now with out a VSS.....Even passed smog with out it!
Runs a little rich but that is it!
rotozuk 08-01-2002, 12:42 PM Here is another issue with low power from the 16 valve.
Correct me if I am wrong, but you are running 1600 into Toyota t-cases. How bad is that in high range? Even with 5.29 gears in the axles, I'd think that a poor combination. That 16 valve is rather low on power near idle. You might want to do like my Toyota club member that starts in low first at each stop light. Then shifts to high 1st, then second. (He runs twins with 5.29s on 38" boggers, and has a healthy 4 banger.)
-Wayne
scwafish 08-01-2002, 06:06 PM The gears arent the problem, because it stalls like crazy in low low, which is 110:1, it should be hard to kill. The final gearing combo I have is very common in toys with 35s, Ive got close to the same hp and weigh a 1000#s less. It has something really wrong with it, it essentially sounds like Dumb's diagnosis.
rotozuk 08-02-2002, 12:37 AM I'll check with my buddy. His 16 vlave is much stronger then it used to be. I know he has played with the distributor several times. The current setup is pretty nice. But that 16 valve is low on torque at an idle. Sounds like yours is down right sick though.
