chevy05 02-17-2008, 07:04 PM I took apart my kingpins today on a D60 axle, I pulled apart the driverside and the kingpin bolt (the allen head cone shaped bolt) threads are completly gone on the inside of the axle housing. The bolt came right out after a 1/2 of a turn. I need to know the best options for fixing this??? Oversized kingpin if they even make one. Or do I try and find a heli coil for this?
Any help would be great.
Thanks
That sux a big one right there, i would get a new inner C welded on. I would not trust a heli-coil on something that important. Also never heard of an over sized kingpin. Good luck with that one!!

Either that, or see if a machine shop could weld it up, redrill it, and tap it. It would be a bit of cash, but that's the only solution I can see short of welding in a new pin.
Good luck man, that sucks ass.
Super Steve 02-18-2008, 10:59 AM holy cow, did u take it off and it was like that? id say weldin it would be fine
BigRed05 02-18-2008, 07:05 PM Dam man, good luck welding it in. Let us know how it turns out. I am starting to rebuild my kingpin 60 next weekend. Hope i dont have the same problem,

A heli-coil is stronger than the threads it replaced if installed correctly.
olchev4x4 02-19-2008, 08:25 AM X2 on the helicoil being stronger than the original threads.

That may be true (so the ads say anyway), but do they make a helicoil that would work? That would be a big fine thread... If they do make a helicoil that size, I would agree though; use it.
Grounhog 02-19-2008, 07:12 PM Heres the story, I built the axle last march, I rebuilt the entire thing all bearings, races, seals, new locker. I did not disasemble the kingpins and check them, but there was no play at all in the kingpins even when the tires were mounted.
So I guess they were obviosuly wore some and after a few trips, and running 39's on them at 4lbs of pressure did a number on them.. To answer some questions yes it was completly loose and wobbly it tooka 1/2 of a turn and it fell right out. PRETTY CRAZY $HIT. at least thats what I thought. I will keep you posted on the out come.
I will be welding it, dontwant to spend the money right now.

BigBlueToy 02-19-2008, 07:18 PM put a BIG chamfer on the end of the threads of the new king pin and weld it from underneath. you also might be surprised how much grip a new male thread will have in the hole.

BBT,
I did have a new kingpin bolt and you were right it did bite some towards the bottom, but I still welded it on the bottom also. I pre-heated the area first then welded it up, got good penatration on the parts. So I think I should be good for a long while...........I HOPE.
Thanks for all the help guys!!

millerxc 02-24-2008, 07:53 PM I had the same thing happen to me a few years ago, I made my own heli coil, I took a piece of cold roll and tapped it to fit a new pin then threaded the outside of it to match what I tapped the top of the C , it lasted longer than the truck.
