i am going to do put a set of Waggy Dana 44's under my Jeep and goin to go SOA. Problem, the front D44 was mounting SUA, and the perch is on the center section. I am going to have to fab up a plate, weld it on and figure out some way to attach the spring:mad3: :mad3:

what have you guyz done on an axle type like this on SOA

well i know 2 people that have done this and i am about to do the same so i've been asking around. one guy i know just took a plate and curved it to fit around the part of the diff that the ubolt sits on so it would sit flush. the other guy i know (this idea seems better to me) just grinded down the peice that was in the way, but then the spring perches weren't level, so they just took a flat peice of 1/4" (?? I think 1/4" not sure though) steel and welded it to the other spring perch to level them out. let me know if that makes sense.

ok.....so, he ground the flat part where the spring sat round to fit a U-Bolt? then put a peice of plate on top, to make the SOA....

All I did for mine was I ground downpart of the casting towards the pumpkin ( had to move the perch in a little) and just welded a perch on top of the raised part. Then welded my other perch on and welded a 1/2 plate on top of that everything is level and it worked out fine.

same here. Its not hard at all. People do spring over's on scout axles all the time and they have even more webbing to grind off than a Wagoneer

While i don't own a Jeep, I have a D44 from a Wag under my pathfinder with a spring over. While I didn't design the bracket, it looks like it's going to be total overkill (which is good). It uses one u-bolt and just two long grade 8 bolts. The perch is welded to the axle shaft on one side and the rest is held by three plates that surround the casting. The U-bolt goes on as you'd expect on the right side of the perch, and the left side mounting plate is held by the two longer bolts (the bottom of the bracket extends to allow these bolts to go through w/o hitting the casting. Sorry for the crappy explanation, I'll get pictures if anyone cares.

Have you tried todo a search? This has been talked about before.

But inany case you grind down a flat spot on the perch, And weld in a perch.

Just did the same setup for a buddies Jeep, we ground the factory spring pad off the tube and welded it to the top of the housing after a little grinder work, then we fabbed a taller pad for the tube side to match. We used a flat plate and four bolts for the housing side spring mount, but a little grinding would allow you to use u-bolts.

thankz guyz, any1 have anymore pics??

By the way, the whole reason we ground off the tube side pad to weld to the housing is that they are both cast steel so we could get a better weld, be sure to use high nickel or stainless rod, I'm no stick welder, just a 220V wire booger maker, so I left that job to my buddy.

i am just goin to weld a piece of plate to the top of the housing, and use straight bolts. ill have to raise the other side. also...grinding that much off the housing seems to me like it would weeken it quite a bit...i will still have to grind quite a bit but not as much. if you guyz have any pics of SOA on a waggy axle, please post them

thanx

cool....you just welded a plate on the housing....did you have to do any grinding on the bottom of the housing to make the U-Bolt fit?

Yeah I had to clearance it a little but it was VERY minamal.. like a minuet or 2 with a grinder. That was only to round some edges.

what about the fact that the perch needs to go in 1/2" on each side to make them fit the YJ springs???? I have a 74 waggy front dana 44 and trying to figure this out my self. currently I just spread the hell out of the springs to make them fit. I had to get it in quickly. but now that I am going back to redo it I am going with spring over. I really don't see how I can move that perch in 1/2" AND make it a SOA.

I like these pics and would really want to see more if anynoe else has them.

Mine is a 79. All I did on top was simply cut a 1/2 out of the casting. I took a grinder to it and it was short work it took maybe 10 min. There is a lot of material there and I highly doubt it weakend it at all. It is a pretty simple matter dont make it harder than it needs to be.

The pass side pad on the left, shows how much shorter I made it to match an out of the box pad.

I just put one on my '91 Wrangler. I did it the same way Jeepdude did using standard spring pads and just cut one out to lay flat on the housing, then drilled a hole to allow for the center pin. I just ground the housing on the opposite side to allow for the u-bolt.

You may be able to see it looking here http://photos.yahoo.com/bc/snobrder Look in the off roading folder it is the one labeled front dana 44 from 87 Wagoneer Just don't expect to see it very well...

Here's the best I can do right now. I didn't take a pic when I built it. And yes, it's pig dirty and leaking oil.

I've got my waggy d44's in my garage right now ready to be built up. I like these pics of the installs you guys did. I'll plan on setting mine up the same way. One question...as far as welding is concerned...I've got a 220v MIG I'm pretty handy with. If I pre-heat the cast metal and prep it really well, do you guys think it'll do to MIG it rather than stick weld it?

Your best bet is to pre-heat, stick weld it with high nickel content rod, then post heat and cool down slowly. I have also heard of people having good luck with migs and welding to the cast steel, but I prefer the stick for stuff like this.

220 mig will be fine just preheat some and wrap it in something to where it will cool slow.

Like said below, it probably wont help but it has been done and I did it the way Jeepdude Jay did it.

Look up TT's fabworks they make spring perches for doing SOA on waggy's.
