dirtchicken 02-19-2008, 11:22 AM No metal tag with model number on the back of the case? NP ???

check here this is what I found, check your shift pattern that will give you some info.
ifurlong 02-19-2008, 12:04 PM besides the small lever on the side, which does not seam to do anything, I see no shifter? The guy I got it from says he got it at a military auction 20 years ago.

Count the number of splines on the female input. I can't tell from the pic, but it looks to me like it a 203 that came behind a TH400.

Yup, that's an np-203. I got one sitting in my garage that I unbolted the range box yesterday. Mine looks exactly like that, except mine has yoke on the front output rather than a flange

+1 no doubt
ifurlong 02-19-2008, 12:09 PM I am new to this, I have a 62 scout that I have not yet started to build. This T-case is heavy! it took two of us to lift it. My buddy has a 4-speed tranny out of a late 60's medium duty truck that I could have , any idea what this might be? He also has a 350 4-bolt which I could get cheap. So I was thinking, this T-case, the 4-speed and the 350 would be a good setup? if it all bolts together?
ifurlong 02-19-2008, 12:14 PM wow, this is a really active fourm! the female input has 27 splines. So is this thing any good? can I reasily get parts for it?
ifurlong 02-19-2008, 12:16 PM as I understand it the T-case is the oblong part? this part has the number GM 346321 with the 2 under. The other part that has the female input has the number GM 344268 with 8 under. What are these two parts?

The entire thing is the t-case, that front portion that is bolted on is called the low-range box. That is what's used in a 203/205 doubler. Since you say it is a 27-spline, you can use that behind a th350 or 700r4 trans.
ifurlong 02-19-2008, 12:28 PM how much is this thing worth? everything turns. Shouldnt there be a shifter on it?

I paid $50 for mine. I don't think they are worth more than $100. They are pretty easy to find and aren't that desireable due to their length, weight, and the fact that they are a chain drive case. There should be some sort of shift linkage, but i don't know exactly what it will look like. Mine didn't have any shifter setup connected to it.
jenks21 02-19-2008, 01:21 PM The shifter mounts to the transfer case through the adapter plate (which yours is missing) it bolt the t case to the trans, the stock shifters are junk just so you know, they tend to pop out of gear ( bunge strap them) and after a while they just wear out. You can make a home made shifter for it if you would like, see the two metal tabs on the side of the case between the imput shaft and the front output shaft, one is for 4 lock and 4 and the other is for hi lo. These are a full time case, and you can buy part time kits for them. You will have to get an adapter plate and run the 350 or 700r4 trans, your manual has a different output shaft on the trans and won't work. These cases are fairly abundant. Both that I have has the partime kit, and the one I bought 3 months ago i got the adapter and output shaft for a 400 for less than $100 bucks. They are not a terrible case but less desired than the 205. They are a chain drive case as well. I haven't had any problems with mine in my small truck, but if you are going big then I would try to find a 205. My specs on mine are 350 hp motor, 33" tires, lockers front and rear, 4.56, modified th350 trans.
here is a pic of mine at the races, she is a beater
