what are the symptoms of a bad throwout bearing, i have a sm465 and it has lots of vibration when going 40 or faster, and when the clutch is pushed in coasting it makes a whining noise. any ideas?

usually when you have a whining noise when you are coasting means that you are having a bearing go out in the trans. vibration no idea

Check your drive shaft u-joints...

u joints are good, also wines when in neutral coasting, when the rpms get up around 2k in every gear it has this harsh vibration???

a throwout bearing will howl when the clutch is let out and it goes away when you push the clutch in

sounds like a bad bearing or bearings in the trans

I had a car do that once, ended up being the clutch was coming apart. Pulled the transmission and about half the clutch was gone.

could you of lost part of the clutch causing the imput shaft bearing to whine and cause vibration? I would say that you vibration is rpm related since it is always around 2k in every gear which would shy me away from the u joint. I would have to say something is out of balance on the motor or somewhere between the motor and trans. There is a pilot bearing as well too correct where the input shaft from the trans goes into the back of the crank, could that wear out causing the input shaft to wobble? just thoughts I am far from a Manual trans mechanic

boy you guys are quick i was typin away and you guys posted same as me.... i need faster finners

ya what they said

That's not true. It's just the opposite.

Pushing the clutch pedal and hearing a whining noise means a bad throwout bearing. The vibration problem sounds like the pilot bearing.

When did these problems start. Have they gradually gotten worse? Did they start at the same time?

they started at the same time, nothing major and have gotten progressively worse, once over 40-45mph it vibrates like crazy and the vibration starts at 2k and up, and it doesnt have a smooth coast like it should, i just bought the truck, had been sitting, guy i bought it from said he just put a new clutch in. but the box was still in the front seat and there was what looked like a new throwout bearing so im assuming he didnt change out the old one.
