I have a few questions that need some sort of an answer that I cant find on here. First is everytime I put my truck into gear the rear axle makes a loud clank sound, obviously something is wrong but what? Also what axles come stock in a 76chev 1/2ton w37" and what new axle or axles should i purchase and install? Thanks for the help.

as far as the stock '76 axles it will either be 10-bolt front and rear or 10-bolt front and dana 44 rear. If it is a heavy half-ton then it will have a 12-bolt rear and/or 10-bolt/dana 44 front. as far as purchasing axlesif you want strength you want a 14-bolt rear and a dana 60 front, you can find a 14 bolt for about a 100 bucks but for the 60 you will be spending anywhere from $800 to $1,500....as for the clank it is probably just the U-joint.

ok, please get your info straight.
a 10 bolt was not available in a truck until 78.
prior to that, the rear axle was a 12 bolt.

unless you get a one ton version with dually hubs, it SHOULD be a straight bolt in. note the "should". there will be a few obvious ujoint issues, but thats about it.

Allright, thanks for the info. Now say I do purchase dana60 front and 14bolt rear. Are both geared the same? Or is it different or what?

Depends, if they are removed from the same vehicle, they should have the same ratio's. Not hard to check, usually the ring gear has the ring and pinion teeth numbers stamped into them. Divide the little number into the big one and you will get the ratio. (Example) If you see 45-11 on the ring gear 45 divided by 11 equals 4.09. While you have the covers off to inspect what you are buying, count em.
