: Another blown tranny!
redneckchevyman 02-19-2008, 06:21 PM This is the second tranny i have installed in a matter of 2 months. I am getting pretty tired of having a broken down truck. This is the second th350 i have put in my truck. I did some research and people say 90% of all tranny failure is overheating. I take my truck muddin quite a lot. So should i just rebuild and throw in a tranny cooler or get a th400 or what?
Snowbird13 02-19-2008, 07:21 PM What size tires, and what axle gears are you running?

stock gearing, i think 12bolt rear and dana44 front with 37s.

Stock gears for auto half tons were usually 3.08's. That is putting a lot of stress on your tranny trying to turn 37's with that high of gears. Regear to save tranny's.
As a band aid, put a big ass cooler on it, and also get a tranny temp guage and don't overheat the tranny.
oldblue75k5 02-19-2008, 07:28 PM You definetly need a cooler I used the old A/C condenser a little more fluid but more cooling I ran 3.08 gears and 36's for a while and couldn't keep a tranny in for more than a month now 4.10 with 37's not a problem in a year Cooling is the key...
silversuper 02-19-2008, 07:29 PM x2 on the better cooling, but an upgrade never hurts if you are replacing it anyway.
my dads suburban eats trannies

wow i didnt know it was 3.08 thats pretty low, no wonder im always smelling burnt tranny fluid haha:p. For driving on the road what kind of gearing/axles/etc should i be running? Also if i run a th400 and np205, do I need a doubler kit/extra pats?
jenks21 02-19-2008, 08:48 PM I run 4.56 with 33" tires and a turbo 350 with a transpack no troubles here. I had 3.08 in mine when I started.
here you go pick what you want

morgsie 02-19-2008, 08:50 PM Actually comparing 3.08s to 4.10s, the 3.08s would be considered high, not low.

Oh i see from the link now. Makes a lot more sense when you can actually see the ratios to tire size. Sweet deal, thanks.

2 new trannys or 2 junkyard trannys?
bucksntrucks969 02-19-2008, 10:04 PM if you are in tacoma, wa check out raymond northwest transmissions in downtown puyallup. good guys and will give you the facts straight up, get you a trans quick, and for a good price. but there are lots of places closer in tacoma too

oy.
you have issues that no doubler could fix, dude.
get rid of the high geared axles... if you want mileage, get a geo. try using some common sense instead of common wallet power.
gottagofast 02-20-2008, 01:57 AM oh calm down grumpy..... 4:10 minimum ..... if you mostly play off road 4:56 ..... when you ARE in the mud (I HATE MUD) use LOW range. If you stuff your radiator/trans cooler with mud and keep going you will smoke your trans..... If you smell a hot trans it is already too late...... and yeah grumpy IS mean but he's also right (just this once :D) mudding and daily driver don't mix. Don't get a geo tho..... at least get a honda or toyota... have a lil class.

Well thats why I asked because I have little or no knowledge of gearing yet hah. Thats why I post questions...to learn:)
odin544 02-20-2008, 11:21 PM thats true. you may consider posting some of these threads of yours in the newb section though.
Grumpy_old_fart 02-20-2008, 11:33 PM awww, odin, dont take away the entertainment value!
