I just picked up three more used SM 420s for $ 150.00 and every one has the same casting number on the tower that my problem one has. The first tower that I tryed fromone of these old junk yard klunckers went right into place on my military tranny and it works perfectly...I will research more on this tommorow and see if I can come up with the final answer.:usa:

Good luck, I picked up my 1964 SM420 for a 30 pack, threw a bunch of new bearings and brass in it along with my NOVAK mainshaft, custom built a reverse light switch, and installed it all in my YJ only to find out that it won't stay in 2nd, and most the time won't even go into 2nd. Just paid $60 for a guy to bring a supposedly good 420 into town, he told me they pulled it from a running dumptruck a couple of years ago, it turned out to be a 1949 trans and they pulled it in 1998 and left it outside since, it was rusted solid and the bottom of the housing was cracked from freezing. Now the guy won't return my calls, but I'll get a hold of him if I have to throw that old POS through his front window. The old trans did have a cool parking brake lever that I'd like to adapt to a t-case mounted disk type e-brake.

I didn't see your last post on it last time I read it though.
I apologize for being a smart-ass. However, I don't care if you have been a machinist for 1000 years, you're still a newbie here and being picked on about it is part of being here. I went through it, too, as did everyone else.
