: Rear Spring Question & Belly Height??
Tex1978 02-19-2008, 08:43 PM Here is what I got in mind for FToy #95. With a rolling frame (engine and dual cases installed)....but too high! That is it....no Ftoy frame on it yet.
Front Springs, RUF w/two Marlin 4" front leafs mixed in. Sky Man. banana shackles.
Rear Springs, Ford F150's all complete w/front hangers under frame and 6" hole to hole rear shackles.
My frame height is 30" I have about 1" of Tcase hanging down. I want to lower this thing down to about 25-27". I think my rear is what is hanging me up, and I thought about going to Allpro Buggy Springs in back but there website shows them discontinued!! I plan to inboard the rears and I suppose I could move the rear/front hanger up and move the rear/rear shackle mount up onto the rear crossmember and maybe run a shorter shackle. I am really thinking the F150s are more applicable to the truggy or fullbody crowd (which is where I started). Any ideas? Thanks
MT4Runner 02-19-2008, 09:09 PM Get rid of a couple F150 leaves. They're what 4 - 5 leaves? How much lighter is the ass end of an FToy than an F150. An F150 is 5,000lbs. An FToy is 3,000 lbs. Probably 1,000 lbs. lighter on each end. Use a 3.5-4" shackle...or mount your shackle above/through/behind the frame.
Get rid of the 4" Marlin leaves up front. They have a lot of arch (by design). Use one or two more stock rear leaves, cut down to a similar length as the bottom marlin leaves.
Do you have a drop front hanger? Set your front spring hanger at stock height.
Tex1978 02-20-2008, 05:17 AM Front hanger is at stock height, maybe a hair lower.
The leafs in front are like this top to bottom. Stock, Marlin, Marlin, stock, stock, stock. The Marlins are very wore and provided very little arch if any. Just used them to get the spring rate up some.
The F150s are 4 leaf, which one do you think I should take out? And yes the back shackle is pretty long. It could be shortened and/or ran through frame.
The front is already somewhat shorter than the rear so really need to focus on the back half of this IMO. Thanks man! ANy more ideas?
It sounds like you need to remove a leaf or two from your front springs. Im with MT4Runner on removing the Marlin leaves. Im not sure about the rears. Some pictures of what youre working with would help alot.
benttoy 02-20-2008, 06:47 AM You will have to play with your spring packs once you have it drivable. Without any weight on it right now you will be changing it around later anyway
Skii4x$ 02-20-2008, 09:00 AM I ended up using Tacoma rear springs from All Pro, they seem to flex really well and are a pretty flat spring pack. My ftoy seems to sit pretty low. Also I would move the rear spring mounts to sit flush with the frame not below them. You will get hung up if you mount them below.
my $.02
ftoy507 02-20-2008, 07:52 PM I started with all pro 3" buggy springs and 27" to the belly pan. I measured tonight and they seem to have settled. A LOT. I am now 24" belly height.
I may order some taller springs from TG.
I love the flex of the buggy spring.

Tell us what your heights are. Top of cage, bottom of frame rail and belly...
Tex1978 02-20-2008, 08:37 PM Well I really dont want to remove any springs from the front cause I dont think that is where the problem is. If anything I would just take out the Marlin leafs and replace them with some the stock leafs. The front sits pretty flat right now. I have always heard that you need like 5-6 leafs in the front (as far as RUF is concerned).
I guess I need to look more at lowering the rear. I plan to inboard the rear springs and when I do I suppose I can raise the front mount and put the shackle where it pivots in the middle of the frame....not under.
As far as I know, myself included, most ftoys run the rear spring front hanger flush with the frame rail.

Ill get you some numbers when I get home tonight.
Skii4x$ 02-21-2008, 10:07 PM So I took out the tape measure. My belly/frame height is 23.5" and the top of the cage is 71.5". If I had to do it over again I would probably try to aim for about 2" more of lift. This would give me a much greater break over angle and you can still rely on suckdown winches. It would also give me a little bit more uptravel out of the rear springs.
Your sitting close to where I was last time I measured with my old 38.5" SX's. Except my cage sits 2" higher on the frame which puts my roof at 73.5"-74" depending on tire pressure.
I'll remeasure mine tonight now that its on 37" Krawlers. I think it raise it up a little.
Thanks for the info  I'm still toying with spring ideas on this years rebuild.
MT4Runner 08-07-2009, 11:55 AM As far as I know, myself included, most ftoys run the rear spring front hanger flush with the frame rail.
BTT for anyone researching lift heights, belly heights, etc. Rear spring hanger flush works well if you're running 3-5" lift springs. If you're running stock rears or anything like a stock rear pack, keep the rear spring front hanger at stock drop (~3" below framerail to spring bolt) to control axle walk--otherwise you have to run too long of shackles.
So I took out the tape measure.
I also agree on building with slightly more lift and planning on suckdown winches.
RIP Kevin. :(
toyotanuts 08-08-2009, 06:55 AM 512 is around 23". Like to get it back up to 25" To low sometimes this year and are springs are shot.
Chrstphrtptts 08-12-2009, 01:02 PM I like the way you think, Im planeing on going the same route with my 1st gen.

they seem to work pretty well this year
zman2day 08-16-2009, 06:05 PM Just checked today.. Mine sits at around 23" from bottom of belly (3/4inch UHMW + 1/8 aluminum) on 37" krawlers.
I like the height just fine.. plenty of compression and plenty of droop. I run TG 5" springs F&R with one or two missing or swapped here and there. Had to change around springs twice already after completing it in May. Just finish the build, wheel it, then worry about springs heights.
Jeep07 08-16-2009, 06:36 PM Just checked mine and its 25.5" to belly. Running Mod'd TG 5" Springs and 40" Irocs.
scrappy1982 08-16-2009, 09:17 PM belly height on #48 is 25inchs, chassis height is 73, thats with alot of comps and trail rides on TG 5inch
