: valve spring pressure
PTSchram 02-20-2008, 12:19 PM I'm finally getting to work on building my 4.2. The heads are at the machine shop (btw-Mike,you apparently did a LOT more damage than you'd thought, I had to replace two intake valves!).
I'm wanting to put a taller cam in than most and taller than I have put in a Rover in the past. Mark at D&D is strongly suggesting I use a heavier valve spring, but my machinist is telling me those I have are fine. Mark says I want 100# closed, but Rover has a spec of 60-65# and my springs are frighteningly consistent at 62# +/- 2# at 1.600".
I'm wondering if 100# of seat pressure isn't too much for an engine that in my experience has enough of a reputation for premature of accelerated cam lobe wear.
Mark is very strongly pushing me to the Crower 60230, a proven strong cam in the Rover V-8, but I'd like more power (insert manly grunt here) but realize the limitations of both the Rover engine/trans and desire for relatively low engine speed power band. Anybody got suggestions or just wanna tell me I'm full of shit and should do what Mark says? The guys at Crower have not been very helpful in the past and the guys at Isky have no idea that we're putting Buick cams in Rovers.
Cheers,
PT
MilSpec 02-20-2008, 01:00 PM I have a Crower cam in my 4.6 Its pretty tall and I have stock springs. Cam has been installed for about 2 years now. I haven't had a chance to check the cam for wear.
evilfij 02-20-2008, 01:31 PM I seem to recall mike putting a high lift cam and higher strength springs in his 4.6 build. While it worked out ok, he main complaint was that it a bit of a dog at low revs--so, yes, you are full of crap.

Your comment critical of me lost all validity when you used such poor language:flipoff2:. I expect better use of language, given your occupation:D.
How tall were these cams in these 4.6s? The one Mark is suggesting is 260' duration by 0.446 lift. I'd like to consider one with 270' duration and 0.451 lift. I'm not too concerned by the lack of vacuum form the longer duration but want the power from the greater lift.

Quoted due to the obvious spelling mistakes:flipoff2:
Why put money into a 4.2? 4.6 blocks are everywhere. Of all the RR V8s the 4.2s seem to have the most issues with dropped sleeves :boatanchor:

Spelling mistake my arse! That was a typo, not a spelling mistake! (OK, maybe I don't proofread all of my posts).
I have a handful of 4.2s and one 4.6 that needs two pistons-it's going in another project after I get AFI's truggy and 109 done. I do however have two 4.0/4.6 blocks that aren't missing pieces off the deck like the 4.6 I have that needs the two pistons.
Believe it or not, I have yet to see an engine with a dropped sleeve. In spite of Serious One overheating this engine, the sleeves all look good.
afirover 02-23-2008, 12:18 AM get back into the shop and get buzzyy dammit :mr-t:
Serious One 02-23-2008, 06:11 AM Tell me how an engine feels different when you have ruined two intake valves? I'm not sure I would know.
Glad to hear I did some real carnage. I'd hate to think that the overheating trip was in vain. :D

My machinist was quite impressed with your work Mike. Not only were they warped, they were warped in multiple planes. For the first time, I may have to worry about valve lash dimensions due to the amount removed. If this had been the first time these heads had been machined, I'd not worry, but as we know this is at least the second time...
evilfij 02-23-2008, 01:00 PM Not 100% sure, but he said it was the highest lift cam he could find for a buick.

Sweet. I'll put that on my resume.
EDIT: Do you have any use for a new set of head bolts? I have the set I didn't use when I got the stretch bolts.
