: Tie rod question

After cleaning, repairing, replacing parts for over a year I've finally started the reassembly of my 1980 Bj40. Offcourse i've lost numerous small parts  .

One of the things i've lost are the little clamps that hold the tie rod ends onto the tie rods.
I saw on the rockstomper site that they use locknuts to hold the TRE onto their Tie rods, i was planning on doing the same thing.
Only thing that bothers me is that in the stock Tie Rods, there is a little cut in the end of the Tie Rod were the stock clamp goes over and then tightens and so holding down the TRE.

Will I be OK using locknuts with the stock tie rod's or should I better find new clamps??

My English sucks :flipoff2: so you guys probably don't have a clue of what i am talking about, so I've added a pic to clarify a bit.

Christoff,
Find new clamps. Or remake the rods. Even with a jam nut you will be able to flex the rod apart where the little slits are. And the you will not have any steering anymore.

Bummer....

If you can't find any in your area, I have some I can send (from a 79), but I don't know how much shipping would be. Go with the clamps or change the rods to a solid (no split) design.

Your English is fine

Guess I'll search again for the clamps! The idea of not having any steering doens't sound too tempting :flipoff2: .
Checked my local nuts & bolts place today and the TRE tread cannot be bought here in belgium, if i wanted them I'll have to have them milled by a machinist, wich will cost a lot of €€€€€€

Yoda, thanks for the offer, but i'll try and find some over here in Belgium. If i haven't got any luck finding some I'll be in touch!!

Thanks for the advice.

well, this is hokey, but what if you welded some little flat tabs and tighten them together with a nut and bolt.????

If I don't I'll find some. And they are yours.

You have put way too much work into that thing to roll it at 80.
