: New to this board; check out my site.
Second Mouse 07-08-2002, 09:42 AM I'm glad i finally found a good message board for the IH people out there. I have been working on my 1980 Scout II for almost 2 yrs. off and on. It is inspected and registered, but I have a little ways to go. Gettin' too hot here in Texas and getting a little burned out myself. Anyway, check out my massive web site and feel free to give my some feedback on the progress. thanks.

Second Mouse 07-08-2002, 10:10 AM Well, since yahoo and geocities don't offer much data transfer for a free site, it might be temporarily down for a bit until the next hour. So if it gives you a temp. down error, then it is just because there are a few of you going there and checking it out.
thanks

I've heard there a few people on this board that might know a few things about wheeling. Are you just bitter that we don't buy nothing from you? I bought a flip cert from ya a while back.:flipoff2:
Mechanos 07-10-2002, 08:24 AM Not exactly my choice of frame color, but hey, it's not my Scout. Looking good man. How did you end up attaching the front bumper to the frame? Did you just use the two through bolts like the stock setup or did you tie it back to the frame rails? I was thinking that for a winching application, you would need more that just the two through bolts for attachment.

OH THE PAIN! :jester:  :jester:
Second Mouse 07-10-2002, 05:08 PM Torc: the biggest reason for a yellow frame was so that it would be obvious to anybody that I had it down far enough to paint it yellow...but if I had it to do over again, I would have gone with gray or silver.
and yes, i did use the stock through holes for the front bumper... I know...a little cheesy, but i really couldn't come up with anyway better to do it at the time. by the way, Snoopy should be proud of that bumper....i copied it straight from their website....i just loved the design.... i thought it came out pretty good...and I should stay out of trouble with Snoopy as long as i don't try to start selling them, the design (for a Scout II anyway) can't be beat, I couldn't find any other front winch bumper that compared to how good looking that one is.
Snoopy: you handle some of the wise asses around here very well, I have heard good things and a few bad things about you guys, but you won't find me saying anything bad....you guys were more than patient with me and very helpful, not that I agree with everything you say, but all the input that I got from all you guys up there has been greatly appreciated.

Second Mouse 07-11-2002, 07:14 PM Ok, ok....lets see if I can start over here......I am the kind of guy that really wants to get along with everybody.... sometimes I can get a little smart mouthed... but since I was new to this board, I really thought that you were being serious about giving snoopy a hard time, because on the BB chat room, there was a guy there (T.M.) that didn't have anything good to say about D&C...and it kinda left a bitter taste....I think everybody comes to places like this to find others that share in their love for their Scouts, so I was just trying to step up to his defense....and that was my mistake. Like it says under my name.."Newbie"...so let me off the hook this time. I do enjoy reading your replies...they are always witty and funny for the most part.
Just a question, though. For somebody who has replied to this board over 2000 times, I have not been able to find anything on you. No pictures of your Scout, no webpage, no restoration, nothing. So what gives? Are you just all talk (on Bulletin Boards) or do you really know what you are talking about? Where is your “build-up” ? My whole life, pictures, home, Scout, family, etc... is on my webpage.....for all to judge....but I find nothing on you. So far, all I can find about you, is an e-mail. And I did look for a bit (search)...but if you do have something like that, it shouldn't be that hard to find.....are you not proud of your Scout, or anything? Put it out there for all to judge. I am sure that if you stop replying to all these boards so much, that you would have plenty of time to make some sort of page up to show all of us your accomplishments.
And if you do have something up, then my mistake, and I would like to see it.

As far as the post count, let's just say I've had nothing to do for the past 7 months at work :flipoff2:
Snoopy received his licks when he showed up on the scene as well as everyone else. You have to remember this a college level board most of us do our own work and fab. So we don't spend a lot of money with D&C, kinda makes you wonder why he puts up with us.
I have a few posts on the board here in the IH section. I'm also on the BB but under another screen name. I wish I had the patience to put together a web page but I'm always in a rush.
You won't find any restro info from me :p and I find it had to believe you could not find any pics of the rig, consider I respond to just about every post in the Binder section.
But I'm purely a web wheeler at heart, matter of fact I'm hitching a ride through the con next week cause my Scout's on 31's with no lift :rasta:
Here's the bomber
Joe
JoshC 07-11-2002, 10:10 PM And me...
My shit is all over the web. I don't have my own web page, but I'm all over the BB and the POR, and anythingscout.com
My wife and two boys are at nearly all of my BBQ's and wheelin trips.
DandC however, does suck. :flipoff2:

Second Mouse 07-12-2002, 05:45 PM Do I smell a mid-life-crisis? I think your anger problem is based on the fact that you’re about to turn 40. Ahh, nothing like a healthy dose of attitude to go around. Makes us all feel like the big happy disfunctional family we are.
I like what you are doing, although I am not a big fan of the rainbow colors. Tub one color, suspension one color, but then, I don't really care to color code my rig so knuckleheads can figure out what I have done. I figure folks will see it on the trails and know it has been tweaked a little.
You need to step up to a different tie rod. That one is going to pretzel on you in short order. Maybe you have one on order already, but I didn't read about it.
Also, what is with the steering stabilizer? Is this a trail rig or a DD? guess you might need it on a DD. Awfully big for a DD though.
You sure took a big chunk out of your tranny pan. I would not have expected it to seal with that much taken off, but you drove it, so I guess it does. Lots of RS sealant?
I keep looking at where you dumped your pipes out, and cannot figure out if I like that spot or not? All the pipes I have seen that hang out very far past the rear tires, end up getting munched when you have to back up a rock or obstacle. They catch, grab, and pretzel in about half a second.
Why not tuck them in right behind the rear tire? Much less likely to hook them on something.
Why does the rear cage end so far forward? Why not run it closer to the back corners of the bed, put oversized feet on it and pick up the body mounts? Seems like an odd place to end it, right between the wheel well and the tailgate. Damian? Is that so it fits under the soft top?

I was eyeing that myself. I tore the hell out of the stock step bumper my rig came with coming down over a fallen tree. Anything coming out the rear is as good as gone, which is why my bumper is now a lawn ornament. :p

Second Mouse 07-13-2002, 05:00 AM holy crap!!! didn't think I would get this big of a reaction..... from what I saw, everybody's quite the smart-mouthed around here, I was just biting back a bit....didn't mean to offened anyone.... and Joe...I was just giving you a hard time.. and if you're the same Joe, then from what I understand, you have been working a lot on the Jeep for awhile....you should've know that I was just giving you a hard time.
And by the way...someone posted something about me having other people working on my Scout...... then you didn't go through my site enough...the only thing that anybody has done on my rig is cut and turn front axle to obtain the proper caster....other than that, I have faked my way through it all.
ah..by the way...how do I get myself out of this spot? :rasta:

Second Mouse 07-13-2002, 05:04 PM Ok...now for a serious reply:
Hooper: the deal with the tail pipes is that the parts Scout I used had just put them in that rig before his tranny took a crap, and being lazy (and not thinking about it really) I just took them out and installed them in my Scout....but you are right, they will drag everything if I don't do something about them. By the way, I went to your web-site, my only complaint: there isn't more. You have an awesome Scout, and I just kept looking for more. Really tough, man.
And didn't realize at the time of the order, that D&C was shorting me the long roll bar. Should've specified "family bar" But that is what you get when you don't fab everything yourself. ;)
Second Mouse 07-13-2002, 05:17 PM Sorry, I didn't answer all of your questions.
The tie rod........show me something else to put on it. I couldn't find anything else that was cost-effective, but I'm all ears for something better.
The rainbow.....I've got no excuse for that one.
The tranny pan.....I did call a few places where they only left about 1/8", so I thought I was doing good with leaving about 1/4" , and by the way, no sealant was used, I just trimmed up the gasket with sissors and I have had no leakage at all.
The steering stabilizer.......it is just a Rancho 5000.....nothing out of the ordinary...?....In fact, someone told me that with 35's, that I might want to put 2 on there.
So far it is nothing....not a DD or anything, but my wife did drive it to work for awhile while my car was in the shop. There I go again, having someone else work on my vehicles. :rasta:

I learned the hard way also about pipes, although not on my rig. Two scouts in one day lost tail pipes the same way, backing into/over a rock, and took us a long time using a hacksaw to cut them back and rip them off. Why couldn't they have just had rusty pipes, would have been easy. Since then, I have taken to carrying my grinder with a cutoff wheel and an inverter along. Haven't had to use it, and truth be told, I'm not sure how long my inverter will last with the grinder on the end, but it beats a hacksaw under there!!

Dang, get me in my soft spot why don't you. All right everyone, I guess he is OK after all ;) My scout is one of the smallest, and least built rigs on this board. I am a true newbie, and rookie at this sport, but I have been on the trail and on this board long enough to know that the old dogs have lots I can learn from. Every now and then, a question comes along that I have dealt with, so I throw my 2 cents in the hat, but I do a lot of listening, hence my low post count. I wheeled my rig before I started building it. Building it one step at a time. Build it, wheel it, see what doesn't work the way I want, fix that, and go on. My latest addition was the ladder bar to control spring wrap and hop. Got to try it last trip out. Guess what, it works, and works sweet. Works so well, that rusty, after doing a awesome imitation of a rocking horse on the same obstacle, to the point that he literally hopped all four wheels off the ground at the same time, already has started planning his bar. Hmm, we might have to change his name from Rusty, to Rocking Horse..... Don't believe me, I have video I will be capturing and uploading here in a day or two. Just like a porpoise, or a rocking horse. But then, I can't jab him too bad. After all, he was able to winch on up because his engine with FI ran, while I had to winch down and drive back out. Only two or three DNF on that one, and I led the way. :(
BTW, with your SOA, first real obstacle you hit, you will be moving your driver muffler outboard (I recommend a turbo style, takes up less space outboard of the frame, and less likely to get tagged), so you can run a ladder bar right down that spot. Or, maybe, (hopefully) you can come up with a better idea/method to control hop. I know Damian likes his kicker shocks, but the ladder bar does a better job. It is a lot more work, more complicated, and it *may* reduce articulation slightly (jury is still out, I will be using the roundup ramp to test that) but I had no rear axle hop. Kept the tires nicely planted, and if it were not for stupid fuel delivery problems, I would have crawled right up those rocks!!!
Speaking of fuel delivery, you can guess what my next project is...
And didn't realize at the time of the order, that D&C was shorting me the long roll bar. Should've specified "family bar" But that is what you get when you don't fab everything yourself. ;)
I have to say Damian is as honest as the day is long. Not sure why he designs his cages that way, but I am sure he has a good reason. Still waiting to hear though.... Hey, Damian??? ;)
You do your own work. That will earn you respect around here. Hard to know when to mouth off and when to pull in the horns. You will figure it out. Takes everyone a while. One thing I can guarantee though, no matter how big you talk, whether in jest or in seriousness, no one will take you very seriously until you get your rig out on the trails and show us your work. Paint and shine impress mall wheelers, but these guys are more impressed by flex, dents, and scratches. Heck, I had to paint my driveline last week because the driveline shop painted it red and the red showed up in a picture. Two cans of hammertite charcoal grey on the undercarriage fixed that for me. Not knocking your colors, to each his own, but get it finished, and get it on the trails.
Edit: had to add a few end bold codes....

Sorry, I didn't answer all of your questions.
The tie rod........show me something else to put on it. I couldn't find anything else that was cost-effective, but I'm all ears for something better.
Only cost effective till you have to buy a few cases for the guy that bailed you out on your first run when you pretzel that one. Pony up and buy a beefed up tie rod. I think Comer sells them, and Fleck from Back Country Binders, also.
Mine is a BCB Stainless Steel. I keep painting it, cuz I don't like the shine, but paint won't stick very well. In any case,

The rainbow.....I've got no excuse for that one. Don't need one. If you like it, great, as I said, to each his own.
The tranny pan.....I did call a few places where they only left about 1/8", so I thought I was doing good with leaving about 1/4" , and by the way, no sealant was used, I just trimmed up the gasket with sissors and I have had no leakage at all.
Cool. As long as it works, that is the important thing.
The steering stabilizer.......it is just a Rancho 5000.....nothing out of the ordinary...?....In fact, someone told me that with 35's, that I might want to put 2 on there.
Yeah, for driving to the trail, and at the mall.
So far it is nothing....not a DD or anything, but my wife did drive it to work for awhile while my car was in the shop. There I go again, having someone else work on my vehicles. :rasta:
That will teach you. But, I don't have to worry about that. My wife is too short to drive mine. It is cool your family is involved in the project, since these things seem to take a good chunk of life. My wife puts up with with mine, sometimes happily, sometimes not so happily.... ;)

you're the same Joe, then from what I understand, you have been working a lot on the Jeep for awhile....
Jeep, now your really pissing me off. Have not owned a heep since I was 18 (did get a lot pussy in it, but that's a different story).
SM, you got to understand something about this site, it's not what can I show you I did, but what I can show you how to do now.
Almost all the standard Scout 101 sheet was discussed in the Daily Topic threads, kinda like the BB FAQ's but with a :rasta: twist
My 2 cents, I'm tired from working on my Jeep all day :flipoff2:
Lil Bears Daddy 07-14-2002, 12:49 AM Secong Mouse, I gotta say you did an awesome job on that website, especially for a hippie ! :flipoff2:
The step by step pics are great, cant wait for page 8....
Good Work.......
Second Mouse 07-14-2002, 08:48 AM Thanks for everybody's replys.....good to get feedback from people. That is one thing I will need to learn: when to keep my mouth shut....I have a bad habbit of popping off before thinking. :goofball:
But my whole point of starting this thread was because I was new to this site, I know how hard it is to find a good site on a step-by-step build-up of a Scout, even if I didn't do everything right. I looked and looked during the build-up of mine, and they are hard to find (that are very detailed anyway) So I was really putting it out there to help others get ideas and to get advice from the likes of much more knowledgable people who know better (at least I know that a lot of you guys are the real experts on this stuff, even though I've been kinda diggin' at some of ya.)
Joe, I must have you confused with a guy that I was chatting with on Rockcrawler, sorry.
Oh yeah, thanks for the compliments LBD, and my hair is longer now than it was in those pics, makes for a real bitch when your out trying to work on the rig. :smokin:
And Hopper you're right, 'till I get it on the trails and take some "see how good it does" pics, then the respect won't completely come, it will just look good going up my tie-wall. But, sad to say, I have run out of money for the lockers, and while I could take it wheelin' like it is, I'd prefer to wait till it is "more" completed. ;)
Second Mouse 07-14-2002, 09:02 AM Sorry, I have to add one more thing:
Joe, I disagree about the "not what you've done" but "what can I show you now"
And my perfect example is this: while doing my build-up, nobody I talked to, called, e-mailed, ....I mean nobody could give me a straight answer on if I could put a 1330 style CV joint on my front driveshaft with an automatic tranny. Everybody I called or talked to had a different answer. Anything Scout, if I recall corectly, said it wasn't possible at all. Somebody else said that with the amout of lift I had, that one notch in the side of the tranny would be all I needed, he ended up right, but for somebody out there like me, $400 on a front driveshaft with a 1330 oversized joint with an automatic, it was huge risk to take without knowing if it was gonna work. And by the way, that is a high angle driveshaft with a 12" slip spine. And now there is no question about whether someone can do it, because I have the pics on my page as proof.
And to my knowledge, that isn't covered in any "Tech 101 for Scouts" that I could find.
So, although it is nice to put out a web site to brag a little, I think there is a definate need for people to see what you have done too, so they can see the obstacles you ran into and solutions that you came up with.....but don't get me wrong, there is also the need for how can you help me now...because I need alot of that too.
Just my 2 cents.
