i just found a 76 terra in good condition with the 345 commanche in it. i am not into hard core wheeling and was just wondering if i was to lift it up a bit and put some 33's on it would i run into trouble wheeling it on intermediate stuff? i know it has stock 44's front and rear and a dana 20, but i am concerned about how big the damn thing is. what are your thoughts on this any input is appreciated.

Wait, a 345 "what" motor?

The Commanche was a 71 800B, and the only sv that it came out with was a 304.

It'll be ok if you have 4.10 gears. I have 3.07s and it's a turd offroad :(

I have an air cleaner housing from a 4cyl 800 and it has 'comanche 4' on it. Runs a scout II sized filter but with a 1 barrel hole in it.

Anyway, its long and there is a lot of metal to hit on shit. Enjoy!

The Comanches also came with an I-6, which my I6 in the 66 1000 I had was only a 1 barrel carb.

lots of folks wheeling full size broncos and the like. scouts aren't that big. i used to take my 800 down quad trails before they closed the local wheeling park. bit of work to squeeze between trees, but it was always fun. my terra is going to go on some intermediate trails and some slightly harder, but none of the crawler/breaker stuff. 33x9.5s make much better trail tires than 12.5s. easier to steer, don't rub the springs on full turns and still good clearance. my scout still (!!) has the stinkin' no good lousy 2:72 gears IH put in. got a D60 with 4:10s and that's where i'm goin. my scout has still kept up with the jeeps i wheel with and pulled a few out to boot. use common (misnomer) sense and you'll be fine.

IH also called the 4 cylinder engines "Commanche" and had a printed sticker that went on the valve cover. Most likely one of these got put onto the 345 in the truck.

I had such one back in 2001.

im not sure what the fuck it is...the kid said it was the big v8 but the air cleaner reads reads "commanche 80" or something

In your other post, you stated that you had a 304 motor?
do i need to regear for 33's assuming i have a 304?

There were only two motors available stock in the Scout II's, the 304 and the 345. Measure the intake valley, at the peaks where the heads meet the block.

-7" across would mean you have a 304 sv (small v8 if you are wondering), unless somebody swapped in a 266 (why I don't know, but I have seen it in a 74 p/u).

-8" across would mean you have a 345 sv, unless someone swapped in a 392.

As for the Commanche stuff, I can see the air cleaner the reason why. I was just jumping in on little flaming. :flipoff2: Just take it with a grain of salt.

interesting....see i originaly thought it was the bigger of the v8's now im not sure....im gonna go measure....im gonna have to give you guys some pictures....you cannot find rust anywhere on the vehicle except one fender....the axles and everything still has most of the factory paint on them......no leaks no wierd shit no nothin....heat and air and everything still work great and the stock cig lighter has never even lit a smoke....single owner before me, the scout has never left colorado. im shocked i finaly found one for cheap in this kind of shape!

If it has no leaks and no "weird shit" then it isn't factory:flipoff2:

Sounds like a good rig, go take it out, beat it, and take some pics.

Oh, and just to stay on topic, I wheel my fullsize mid 70's Dodge Pickup and that thing is huge! I keep up with all of my Wrangler buddies pretty easily, you just have to be more creative.

x2 on re-gearing to 4.10's

And the 196, and the Nissan Diesel, and the AMC 258.

I was meaning the V8's. He knows he has a V-8, just different posts with different v-8's listed
