MT4Runner 02-23-2008, 08:33 AM There's a lot of disbelief in the air shock thread in the Gen 4x4 forum about Brett's 5th place FToy finish and all FToys finishing.

i just found out. all 5 ftoys that started the race finished the race!!!
matt and nathan were the last 2. they had more carnage than the me and john and it put them further behind. but they still were able to fix it and go.
matt finished with just the front drive line for the last 5 miles:laughing:
surfptrl 02-23-2008, 08:34 PM brett would have done better but he flopped taking a crazy line on sunbonnet trying to get around disabled rig in the middle of the trail ..

my rear was bouncing like it was in a hydralic car bouncing competition...it made it real hard to go fast and it made it dangerous in the woops:smokin:
good times:D
Mustard Dog 02-24-2008, 09:00 AM The way all the F-Toys performed in this race was awesome.
Way to shut down the shit talkers:D
Aaronn 02-24-2008, 10:06 AM I'm pretty sure that Brett was 5th to finish but 4th by time
toyotanuts 02-24-2008, 10:45 AM thats cool. Great job
desertoy 02-24-2008, 03:03 PM What a great race! The Marlin Crawler formula toy ran great. The starting order of the race was decided by a drawing. there were 44 racers. Matt Messer started 4th Brett Porter started 5th, Craig Thomson started in the middle of the pack. I started in the 41st position and Hobie was 2 positions beind me in 44th.
Luckely it was raining a little before the start of the race which kept the dust down. Mike Hendricks and I were kicking ass the first 20 miles of the race. Infact we were able the catch Mustard Dog for a second going up the return road to Sledge Hammer. This is when I realized that we had an air leak and the lockers wouldn't lock. It took us about 10 minutes to figure out that an air line going up the shifter had gotten pinched between the shifter and the trans tunnel. we were able to get it fixed by cutting the damaged piece out and re routing it.
Coming down Sledge we ran into traffic with the first of several broken rigs blocking the course. Luckely they were able to get to the side without too much delay.
At the bottom of Jack North we had a fuel stop and while checking out the rig we realized that the right front main leaf was broken in half. I thought we were done for the day.
We back tracked to checkpoint 6 and found a guy with a welder. He welded the main leaf to the leaf below it in several spots. I don't know who this guy was but he definately knew what he was doing. I worried about that spring the rest of the race and we were a little more conservative in the rough spots but it held together.
There was a parking lot of stuck and broken rigs at the last obsticle on Wrecking Ball. It took us a while to get around that mess. Thanks to Odie from Longfield Enterprises and Bob Roggy for getting us through it.
Luckely, as we passed JR and Chris Ridgeway on Outter Limits, Chris told us that the rear diff looked like it was leaking a little. When we finished Outter limits, we pulled into check point 12 so the guys could check the rear drain plug. As soon as they touched it, it fell out. Aaron plugged the hole with his thumb so the oil wouldn't run out. they couldn't get the plug to thread back in, so they beat it in with a sledge hammer and duct taped it:) .
As we were dealing with the drain plug, Hobie came out of nowhere and passed us with his middle finger in the air and a smirk on his face :flipoff2:.
Mike Hendricks kept telling me " Settle down, We can still catch him". We took of and the chase was on. When we topped out the hill and turned West to go down the MDR course toward the dry lake, Hobie was nowhere to be found. Mike yelled "He went the wrong way". So we took of trying to put as much trail as we could between us and Hobie without breaking the welded spring. When we cam across the drylake, all we had to do is get through the last hill and we were back to the finish line. Well, I got confused where the track was and took the wrong road throught the mountain. We got a mile through the mountain when we had to turn around and back track to the drylake and find the course. this is when Hobie got around us again. We came in about 5 minutes behind Hobie, happy to have finished the roughest off road race in the country.
Thanks to all the people that pitted for us and chased us throughout the race. the pit support made all the difference in the world.
TIN BENDERS ROCK!!!!
ACE-CAGE-#29 02-24-2008, 04:06 PM What an adventure! That was the most fun I have ever had at an event. Driving fast through the desert is way more fun that I thought it would be and then to run 10 hammers trails at the same time. MAN....I AM PUMPED STILL!
On Thursday we pre-ran 25 miles and felt really good about what we accomplished. We brought the buggy back and tightened all of the loose bolts and checked everything over to make sure we were ready for Friday.
We started in the 4th position. The start of the race was exciting because of the media and all of the fans. We made our first mistake 2 miles into the race, I took a wrong turn that cost us 3-4 minutes. After that we ran hard to catch the dust trails of Brett and Drew Goldie (his buggy burned to the ground later in the race). We finally passed Brett while he was getting recovered. Just a few miles later Brett came from behind and blew by me like I was standing still and 20 seconds later my front driver rim and tire flew off. We had sheared all of the wheel spacer studs. This was at mile marker 23 appox. It took us a a little over an hour to get back on the road. All of the other f-toys passed us while we were repairing the lost wheel.
Finally we were back in the race and caught Hobie during a driver change. We ran down sledge, up Jack, down jack north and up wrecking ball where we snapped the right rear axle. We were in a traffic jam with Hobie and Jack from CTM when the axle let go. We struggled up the rest of the trail in 3 wheel drive and had to use the winch multiple times. We proceeded down claw to CP #10 and then back to the trailer to change the axle (it made for a nice lunch break, while the crew changed the axle out).
We were once again back in the race heading for the final trails, the johnsons and outer limits. We completed the final trails with out any problems other than getting off course for a few miles. On the last stretch of open desert we came across Drews burnt buggy and Nathan and Craig. I drove the Trail-Gear f-toy as fast as it would carry us (GPS read 55 mph) through the last check point and into the lake bed when the rear drive line disintegrated and scared the crap out of us. BOOOOOM. It was loud when it let go. We finished the last 5 miles with front wheel drive only. It was truly an accomplishment just to cross the finish line.
My hat is off to Brett for out driving all of us. He did great! I also applaud all of the other f-toy teams in finishing an extremely long and difficult race. WE DID IT! I can't wait until next year. I am already planning for it. Thanks for reading my story, sorry it was so long.
OH yeah, I almost forgot. Both TG rear axle housings (mine and Nathan's) held up great for the entire race. FYI.
Thanks,
Matt
good story guys.
the best part of the race was seeing john at the top of big johnson leaving the trail and i hadnt even gotten to little johnson yet. then catching him 2 trails later at the bottom of outerlimits.
i saw him on the side of the road and my first instinct was to stop and help so i started to slow down, then i remembered last year so i dropped a gear and floored it and left his ass on the side of the road:flipoff2:
then i had the time of my life trying to hurd my boncing ftoy thru the woops to try to stay in front. then after getting lost and turning around, i followed john thru the last checkpoint right in his dust. he started 1 minute in front of me, so all i needed to do is be within 1 minute of him and i still beat him even though i finish behind him. but then he disappeared and i thought he was way in front of me. at the finish line, i asked, so where is john, and nobody knew. then i was kind of worried that something happend...but he came bouncing in after that...
that was the funnest time i have ever had wheelin

Napolian 02-24-2008, 05:16 PM That was an awesome race. We started out doing well, but just before the first check point we started overheating. So we had to take it easy, when we got to the rocks the temp. dropped so we started to pick up some time. Then we broke a motor mount and are steering pump started failing. The broken motor mount eventually caused a broken t-case mount, heading up jack we lost the air compressor for my front locker eventually figured out it was a wire that got pulled out of the pressure switch. Then we lost a rod end nut and cotter pin. Thank you to who ever the guys were that helped get the rig going again. Then on wrecking ball I got on my side a little bit right past the waterfall and the coil wire pulled out because of the broken motor mount. That was the traffic John James was talking about. We finally got it started and we were on are way again. We also lost are air filter on wrecking ball So Craig took off a sock we oiled it up and zip tyed it to the intake. We took it slow through the desert so we wouldn't over heat again and right before the last check point we sheared off wheel studs. We got it fixed (sort off) and limped it across the finish line. That was so much fun I can't wait till next year.

Wow thats a few rigs with sheared wheel studs.
Makes me feel like I didn't waste anytime uprgrading to 9/16" ARP studs

There was a kid walking around the finish carrying an air cleaner asking everyone if they had lost it...said he found it on wrecking ball...good thinking on the sock

Yea I found it back at camp, I was pretty stoked to find everything that I lost along the trail back at camp
ToolBox Guy 02-24-2008, 09:24 PM Alright, my fingers are just now to the point where I can type, they were killing me from white knuckling the wheel!
I still can't believe that we placed as well as we did. We didn't drive overly fast, we just drove consistent. If you look at starting positions compared to finish times, John and Hobie both were hauling ass!
As most of you know we pulled 5th starting position behind Matt in the Trail-Gear rig, I can't tell you how many times I told my brother " Matt's going down as soon as we get over the sand hill".
We got to the first big sand hill and Matt was nowhere in sight. Bryon was saying "Damn, he is fast", I guess they had a little navigational error. And I tell you what, I am glad that John James told us that we HAD to prerun that section. We ran pretty smooth to the first trail after being passed by quite a few big dogs. As soon as we hit Aftershock I think it was a little more than most of them expected we passed several broken rigs, and were riding JT, and Casey Curries butts, but of course when the trail ended they were long gone.
Next up came Sunbonnet, everthing was going smoothly until we flopped trying to take a stupid line around Tom Wayes. Thanks Brandon and Corey for the recovery:D. We lost alot of positions during that ordeal but I hope it shows up on Helicopter footage, because they filmed the whole ordeal.
After Sunbonnet we gained back alot of positions and only ran into a couple more delays. One on Jackhammer, thanks to Hal, and Cody Deschamps and Bill for spotting us through:D. And two on Wrecking Ball.
We ran the last of the desert sections pretty slowly, because I was afraid of the motor blowing. The day before as we were prerunning, we thought that we had blown a rear main seal, we limped the rig back to camp and had a half dozen Benders wrenching on my rig.:D Thanks Flash, John, Aaron, MD, and some guy named Tommy, who I just met and let tear my ventilation apart.:D
The rig ran great and I have to thank Jeff Kirkpatrick, Joe Aumon who spent tons of hours helping me work on it to get it ready.
The list of people to thank is long.
My wife for putting up with me for the last couple of months, Jeff, Joe, Bruce at High Desert Driveline, The shafts held up great! Jason at Impact Sign for always keeping my rig looking good. Jason, and Lacy Kirkpatrick for showing up to help pit, Mike and HT for toquing us down at cp #6, and all of the Benders for the assistance and pit support, you guys rule. Thanks also to Jeff and Dave for putting on an awsome event, I feel priviledged to be a part of it.
Mustard Dog 02-24-2008, 09:32 PM and some guy named Tommy, who I just met and let tear my ventilation apart.:D

ToolBox Guy 02-24-2008, 09:58 PM That's my bro-in-law:D

He walked up and started tearing apart my rig, after about ten minutes he turns to me and goes " By the way, I'm MDs' brother in law, Tommy". I was nervous at first that he didn't know what he was doing but between him and Flash the rig didn't spew over the rest of the weekend. Thanks again guys.
ToolBox Guy 02-24-2008, 10:02 PM Hey, Eric here is one for Rose. You and your #1 fan
Air Ride 02-24-2008, 11:10 PM Thanks John James for letting me take the right seat.
Thanks to all the F-Toy teams for finishing so well and making F-Toys a force to be reckoned with in a game where they were seriously out gunned.
I was in off-road racing for 8 years and never had as good a time as I did this last week. Can’t wait tell next year.
EarlKann 02-25-2008, 12:03 AM Congrats to Brett and all the F-Toys. I didn't see it mentioned in the thread, but the final results are posted and Brett got bumped to 6th, but still and awesome showing.
I'll keep dreaming that I might get to race mine one year.

handlebar 02-25-2008, 08:16 PM Guess it would be rude to mention that KOH was won by an ARIZONA guy, I know , it hurts but if I let it go you guys wouldnt have me to hate. sam :flipoff2::flipoff2:
powdr7 02-25-2008, 09:23 PM I drove the TG F-toy and Chris was the co-driver. I am not sure why the names got recorded like they did.
Matt
More than likely because Chris had the invite.
mtbrjon 02-26-2008, 07:06 AM This was definitely one of the highlights of my adult life. I've done all sorts of motorpsorts competitions from offroad motorcycle racing to on road car racing and never had this much fun! Visiting the Hammers is a life changing experience alone but being allowed to compete in the KOH is beyond description. Thanks to Hobie for allowing me to prep his rig and bring it 1800 miles for this event. :D I knew when I got the call it was a once in a lifetime opportunity that I couldn't pass up. Big thanks to Matt, Craig, and the Trail Gear crew for all their help in getting Hobie's car ready and for making us feel welcome once we arrived on this "strange planet" (Tony kept us cracking up the whole time). You guys were great to hang out with, just wish we could have stayed longer. Thanks to all the other Ftoy teams for the help (John James I owe you a tre). Brett congrats!! and thanks for the horn! The Tin Benders pit support was phenominal!!
My apologies to Hobie for driving my stint so slow. Within the first 100 feet of my drive we lost the rear upper shock mount bar entirely then another few miles the front u-joint. I was really worried about the car staying together for the whole event so I was taking it easy. Then Hobie jumped in as driver and was fawkin bawlin!!:eek: I was pissed (mostly at myself). I said "dude why didn't you tell me I didn't have to go so fawkin slow!!". So we could have finished even better. My bad.
If I ever have the chance to get back out to the Hammers or particularly the KOH I will jump on the chance!!
Warning: Do not pull your 44ft enclosed trailer and dually off the side of the road while in the desert......you will spend a couple hours digging out then unload both rigs and winch a while then dig some more and...........it will suck!
samota87 02-26-2008, 08:52 AM Who got to see john james try and make the by pass on wrecking ball just pass the water fall and get all messed up on the side hill. If he would have fallen onto the ftoy the ran out of propane bellow it could have been bad news. Odie(megatoy66) amd i pulled on that winch line with all we had to keep that from happening. It was pretty exciting.:smokin:
Jeep07 02-26-2008, 09:06 AM Anybody got video of some of the Ftoys going through the woop sections etc?

That was crazy I thought I ran out of propane, but it actually was the coil wire I got a little bit on my side and with a broken motor mount and trans mount the motor pulled out the coil wire. I had a 10" dia rock land on the passenger floor just barely missing me when they were all trying to pass. Thanks for all the help there guys, and thankyou John for not rolling onto my f-toy that could have hurt. Oh and by way the final results show that Craig and I did not finish and I'm not sure why but we did finish and hit every check point and crossed the finish line before the cut off.

Well it was pretty fun. It was good bsing with ya over at bobbys camp .
it would love to see john passing on that side hill at the top of wrecking ball.
that sounds like the best pass of the entire race by anyone. espcially those losers in all the KOH videos with their broken down rigs.:flipoff2:
check me out, i made the pirate4x4 epidsode!!! its when me and john are at the top of outerlimits. you can hear me hit the gass when i see the camera, lol.
now that jon is home. i am glad you made a safe trip. big thanks to jon for coming all the way out here and doing all the leg work and prep work for the race. i would of never been able to do the race if it werent for you.
and dont worry about driving too slow, you can practice up for next year and we will win the whole thing as long as the chassis holds together, lol
YELLOWHOBO 02-27-2008, 10:28 PM Not only did John pass on the up hill side... 2 others did at the same time. At one point john james was side by side with another rig and Scott Ellinger was right in front of them. I was trying to winch our rig out but kept getting distracted by all the crazyness up above. What a great moment!
megatoy66 02-27-2008, 11:18 PM The side hill crawl on wrecking ball was a great time, I got my workout that day trying to manhandle the marlin crawler F-toy driven by John James.
Odie.

You and me both.
desertoy 02-28-2008, 12:49 PM That was great!!! As I rounded the right side of the big rock, i seen Bob Roggy waving me up the side of the hill. I should have gassed it ALOT more but I really didn't know what we were getting ourselfs into.
Thanks to all who grabbed the winch rope and held on as I scrubbed sideways across the hill. As soon as we got past the rigs and everyone let go of the winch rope, it felt like we free fell about 10 feet to the bottom (going backwards). You think it was exciting to watch, you should have been at the wheel .
Good times
