What are the lowest gears available for a D44 front axle? A 'wheeling buddy of mine recently picked up an old Ranger with a D44/9" and was going to use it for a second beater truck if he could gear it for the tires he runs (39's...he didn't tell me what engine it has).
5.89's were the lowest I found with a quick search on Randy's R&P site.

I *think* you can get 5.89's, but anything deeper than a 5.13 and the pinion head gets smaller than the pinion shaft.
So, a 5.13 is the deepest practical gear for a D44.
EDIT: just re-read your post and saw where you found 5.89's. oops.

yep...5:89 is the deepest, but i went 5:13 and wouldn't go any lower. after that the pinion just starts getting too small

If it's a HP D44, 5.38 would be fine too (you'd especially want that ratio if it's got something other than the 4.0L V6)
