: How to set up older 14bolt like the newer OEM disc'd ones???
altoids 02-24-2008, 11:02 PM The newer 14 bolts that come with disc brakes, how exactly is the e-brake set up for these newer vehicles? Reason being I would rather set up my old 14 bolt the way the newer ones are setup & if had a better under standing of the setup I believe it could be accomplished fairly easy. Any help would be greatly appreciated or if some one has a link or has already achieved this please explain. Thanks.
proudredneck84 02-25-2008, 01:26 AM i cant remeber who makes it just google it there are a couple companys making rear calipers for older 14 bolts that are set up for an e brake. look on colorado k5 i believe someone did i tech write up on them.
HEEPJEEP 02-25-2008, 01:51 AM They use a brake shoe/drum style ebrake using the hat of the rotor as the drum. Try to pick up a set of new style backing plates, hubs, rotors, calipers, etc...

Again, he is looking for the OEM setup with the parking brake inside the disc.
I believe this topic has come up before on Pirate. Give it a search is all I know.

I know hes looking for OEM style but thought the link may help him out, I m at work but I think I have a link for the OEM style on my computer at home, Ive been saving several links for a possible 14 bolt build up one day..:homer:
altoids 02-25-2008, 12:09 PM UCTJ, if you find the link post it. Yeah I've seen all the threads about disc brake conversions, K20 rotors, stud length's, weld on brackets, bolt on brackets, using a line lock, drive shaft brake, etc.... I've found roughly nothing about setting up a 14 bolt like a newer one. I may look into what HEEPJEEP said.

Yeah, if you find that link post it up. I have a 14 bolt and I know they are going to give me crap about my driveline e-brake. All the shops around me are a pain to get anything inspected...wish I could find a shop that would overlook a few things.

Well if your ever in my town Universal City just outside of San Antonio let me know the shop that inspects mine never messes with that. And Ill look and see if I have something and Ill post back up.

Joe_88k5 02-25-2008, 05:33 PM I've been looking into the same thing and I think the newer brake hardware should bolt onto an older housing. The hub bearings are the same part numbers but I haven't measured anything yet. Once the weather gets warmer I'm going to pull the rear end apart on the Dmax and see how the parts compare to the 14b. The only problem I've run into is that any bone yards around here that actually have a newer axle won't part it out and they want over $1000 for the assembly. Buying all the parts individually adds up fast too so it's definitely not a cheap option unless you can beg/borrow/steal a donor axle.
guidolyons 02-25-2008, 05:40 PM See if this helps:
Mechanos' 1 ton fat ass 14B disc conversion (with E-brake in hat rotors from a Dodge)

trkklr77 02-25-2008, 06:07 PM why not just use the complete newer axle? same gear setup and applications.
altoids 02-25-2008, 06:30 PM Yeah, that's the kind of set up I'm looking for. Now does any one know if you can use the K20 rotor & caliper or do you have to use what Mechanos used? I also wanted to know if any body had some pics or part #'s of the newer disc'd 14 bolt's. trkklr77 the newer axle cost's out the ying-yang at junk yards. So I'm not even going to the dealership to see what they charge, but that would be a good way to go if it were cheaper.
fyresq 02-25-2008, 09:28 PM I read on the other post that eldorado calipers have the e-brake setup?
altoids 02-25-2008, 11:13 PM Yeah, they do but there also not that great at holding especially when you've been in some mud.
Joe_88k5 02-26-2008, 05:20 PM why not just use the complete newer axle? same gear setup and applications.
Big $$$$ since they're not that widely available in parts yards yet.
Altoids... you'd have to use the application specific rotor because it has to have the e-brake surface inside the rotor. Caliper could be anything that fits the bracket/e-brake backing plate if they are one piece. If they're separate pieces then you could use any caliper that fits over the rotor.
I can pull up exploded pictures of the newer "14 bolts" and all the part numbers when I get a little spare time.
Edit: Reading through Mechanos' post and I remembered that Dodge and GM rear axles are the same now since they both use AAM 10.5's and 11.5's, as well as Dana 70's. All those parts are exactly the same as on the GM HD's.
altoids 02-26-2008, 06:10 PM Joe 88k5, If you can find that file w/the pics that would be great. I was unaware Dodge & GM used the same axle now.
Does any body know what year they started using the same axle & also what year GM went to disc brakes. Thanks.
Joe_88k5 02-26-2008, 06:12 PM Ok here's a list of part numbers. Let me know if you want numbers for any of the other parts.
Edit: These numbers should be good for 01-07 model years.

trkklr77 02-26-2008, 06:32 PM how much are they worth to you?
they show up in my yards fairly regularly now and are $150 out the door.
altoids 02-26-2008, 06:37 PM So you're telling me you get newer 14 bolt OEM disc'd brake axles w/ebrake set up often out the door for $150. If so send me a PM b/c I can get a deal thru Old Dominion to have it shipped.
trkklr77 02-26-2008, 07:06 PM its not a deal, its the everyday price at pick n pull. and yes , 2000+ 14 disk brake complet, but the diff cover will have a hole in it from how they drain the oil:shaking:
i will be in la this weekend but will be able to check next, they have been around a lot lately.
Joe_88k5 02-27-2008, 09:39 AM Holy CRAP that's cheap! Yards around here want $1200+. I wonder what shipping on just the brake assemblies would cost?
