: JeepSpeed Axles
Philly2Crazy 02-25-2008, 04:20 PM I'm looking at way too many options right now. My thinking is Front HP44, rear 9'. I like the idea of a third member, but just kicking around ideas at this point. What is everyone running and what is the thought process behind it?
Thanks
maxyedor 02-25-2008, 04:42 PM I would use 9" front and rear, being able to drop the 3rd member has saved a couple races for us, using a 9" has really saved our ass when we broke a ring gear and another team had just rolled and let us use their ring gear to finish the race. The 9" is going to be lighter than any 44, if you use a Spydertracks housing it will have about the same clearence and you can put it together for nearly the same cost, but it will last so much longer your final cost will be drasticly lower. If you run 35 spline axels I can almost garuntee that you will never twist one, much less break it.
Philly2Crazy 02-25-2008, 04:44 PM What about uptravel clearance in the front?
maxyedor 02-25-2008, 04:54 PM That's a good question, never having built a JeepSpeed I have no clue, although I think that's what the Termiator was running, somebody who knows for sure will chime in.
9" doesn't fit in the front.
jonkrell 02-25-2008, 07:57 PM Barnett's truck ran a 9" in the front for a while....but they took it out because of weight i think.
I bet Erik finds a way to stuff one up there ok.
mobil1syn 02-25-2008, 09:50 PM 9" doesn't fit in the front.
is that why shaffer went with the toyota/44 hybrid?
NRT_Chris 02-25-2008, 10:07 PM 9" doesn't fit in the front.
The 9 will fit but it will limit up travel. I have sold about Three 8" ford fronts in the few years, the gear ratios are kind of limited though.
Dusty Booger 02-25-2008, 11:26 PM I also recommend the HP Dana 44 front & 9" rear. It really seems that the 9" would limit up travel too much in an already limited class. I had to hammer in my Dana 44 cover to get another 1" of travel.
Having removable 3rds has obvious benefits for the rear due to ease of gear change & quick replacement during races.
jonkrell 02-26-2008, 12:22 AM whats the up travel interference? Oil pan? Has anybody ever notched a 4.0L oil pan for clearance?
maxyedor 02-26-2008, 12:37 AM If the 9" limits uptravel too much, how about a Toyota diff? It's got all the advantages of the 9" just not quite as strong.

shaffer had toy/44 hybrid for the 1000
GoodTimes 02-26-2008, 07:30 AM whats the up travel interference? ?
Yeah, the oil pan.
Philly2Crazy 02-26-2008, 12:24 PM I also recommend the HP Dana 44 front & 9" rear.
Did you go with 5.13 gears or 5.38? I want to do 5.38, but that is a tricky size to find for an HP44...
GoodTimes 02-26-2008, 02:16 PM We run the 5.38 in 4wd. At some of the shorter 2WD races we run a 6.0.

5.13 is the lowest HP44 I could find. I would have gone 5.38 if I could have.
FYI: The 1st point of contact for me was the track bar with the front diff cover. This could be solved be changing the track bar set up, but for now we are running a "stock" Rubicon Express track bar & bracket.

.
I have a reverse D44 5.38 that I got from Precision Gear. I wonder if they made more than one???
Dusty Booger 02-27-2008, 10:20 PM It's not in the PG catalog. Was it a prototype? I have not seen one advertised by any of the other Mfg's either. Anyone post up if they are aware of one. It would not be an immediate priority to re-gear as I think I still have bigger issues to address with the car 1st. However, at some point I would not mind going a bit lower.

Tweak it in the bender and be done with it. I ran one for years and it hit the diff cover. Drew modded it adding a second bend to the bar. He didn't even bend it enough to damage the powdercoat. You can sort of see the second bend here. Nothing binds either.

RE used to make a front track bar with a heim end that had this bend in it for 3-4" lifts. The Extreme bar only has the one bend. (RE may still make this, I am not exactly sure)
Dusty Booger 02-27-2008, 10:51 PM Frank, I probably will do a little bend like that. I bet we could get at least another safe 1/2-1" of up travel.

Superior doesn't have one, talked to Jeff today he doesn't like the pinion size or teeth count. Did some searching and see Motive gear does - we have had really good luck with Superior, so it will be a hard choice to put something else in...

Damm Frank. When did you get that kit? We haven't done single bend TJ track bars for about 4 years. The new (4 years ago) track bar has two bends in it and is a larger diameter (1 3/8") and thicker (.188wall) material .
Nice pic by the way.
Beat95YJ 02-28-2008, 09:44 AM I put the kit on for Moab 03 EJS. Bolted the kit on over the weekend, aligned it Monday and headed for Moab monday afternoon. I have beat on it for years and it is still doing fine.
FWIW I was not present when this photo was taken. My Jeep was taken to "lunch" one day when it was at Poly getting the rear coilovers mounted. After lunch this was e-mailed to me. It takes it though!

It's not exactly a new number, but it's in the "08" catalog now.
Jeff Knoll 02-28-2008, 11:23 AM 9" doesn't fit in the front.
:D You sure? LOL muhahahahahahahaha:evil:
DJR might have a HP44 for sale soon.

How soon :D
FatCity 02-28-2008, 11:51 AM :D You sure? LOL muhahahahahahahaha:evil:
It would probably fit in the Wrangler's because the motor is so much further back, but the 3rd member hits the oil pan in the Cherokee's even if you cut the webbing out.
Jeff Knoll 02-28-2008, 12:18 PM What if it was 3/4 of an inch smaller on the top and bottom?
http://www.diamondaxle.com/front_steering.htm
As far as how soon to sell the HP 44 might be after Terrible town 250 in April. It will be missing some parts.
FatCity 02-28-2008, 12:47 PM What if it was 3/4 of an inch smaller on the top and bottom?
No, it's not a problem with the housing so much as it is with the 3rd member itself. That's why we opted for the D44R.
Jeff Knoll 02-28-2008, 01:11 PM Gotcha.
I would say buy a wrangler, but why spend the money to DNF.:D

I'm not saying your boy doesn't know what he's talking about but... Your boy doesn't know what he's talking about.
The tooth count on a 5.13 is 41-8
The tooth count on a 5.38 is 43-8
