The valve/lifter noise was too much to take. i took off the valve cover and saw that three rockers werent moving as much as the other 5. i took a piece of wook and tapped on the rocker just above the push rod on each area with issues. one totaly broke free and is back to normal. the one next to that one broke free a little bit but when the engine is running and i put my hand on the spring i can still feel a hammering feel and can tell it is related to the tapping noise.the third one didnt really break free and when i rest my hand on the spring it has a hammering feel to it a little more than the partially stuck one. here is the other issue....when i crank the engine without the coil connected no matter where i stop the engine i am able to lift the totaly stuck rocker right off the spring and it has a good range of motion of play....the partialy stuck one has only a small amount of this play, and the one that freed up along with the all the others dont have play at all...please help me.

i dont think i did any damage i wasnt pounding on them hard im not an idiot. I can put it back together from here and try atf for a while like some have told me to.all i did was try to tap them a lil and alot of the noise did go away. i just wanted to see if anyone had another idea i could try while im this deep in instead of just putting the new gasket on and forgetting about it. what is my next step here....lets not forget i got one loose and its back to normal and i got one halfway there!

Lifters... Hydraulic lifters are not lifting any more, it happens in those old crappy IH motors... Oh crud, yes crud also can build up in the oil passages to the lifters, even with the new lifters it still does not work. Check for clogs, replace the lifters.

well the rocker arms are rockings, the two that are still stuck just dont move as much as the others.

You may have bent pushrods by now or a flat cam too.

I picked up a FREE Traveler in Texas last June. It sat for 5 years and was a mess. 304 with STUCK valves, dead lifters. It even had a few bent pushrods from trying to open the valves. Some valves were even stuck open. No bent valves.
It still ran on 4 cylinders though and got itself on the trailer. :smokin:

I pulled the VCs and douched the valves with PB blaster right on the valves themselves. Then I added about 2 gallons, yes 2 gallons of diesel to the oil and let it idle. It probably idled for an hour and then it loosened up. Replaced the bent pushrods and changed the oil. It started to get lifter tap again about a week after that. Did the diesel in the crankcase routine again and since then it has been quiet.

Yes, we got CHUNKS out of the oil when it drained!

We even have beat on it while wheeling since then and it is still quiet. Runs damn good too.

I'm with Shadow man. Check to make sure you dont have bent pushrods. Replace the bent ones. Dump $20 worth of diesel(about 2 gallons) into the crank and let her run. Lather, rinse, repeat.

last nite before bed i poured some marvel down the push rods and let it sit like that over nite. i just started it and the noise is about 1/5 of what it was. i think its breaking loose. how do i tell a bent pushrod....they all look like they are spinning true. even though you guys are fucking with me, you are helping me too...kind of sort of little bit...ill buy a star how much is one.thanks for the help. any more input?

Perform the Diesel fuel TSB.

Look for a loose rocker and also valve movement compared to the others. The valves that are not going up and down as much as he others, check that valve-train. It also will be noisy, sometimes. Depends on how badly the pushrod is bent. You could always pull the rocker assembly off and check each pushrod individually. One at a time. Put them back in the same hole.
Its easy to determine which ones it is too, because that cylinder or cylinders will miss-fire or not hit at all.

Next step is the very small amount of body work the truck needs, paint, then lift and tires. it also needs brakes bad and im working on that stuff today.

I'm still saying it was the lifters...and crud... That is what the diesel does, it flushes out the crud... Marvelous misery oil works too, sounds like that is the way you went. Even though I don't drive one, there are three Scouts in the yard...been there, done that...
If you read past the flames and look at the charcoal, must of the guys were giving you good advise...

with the paint,body work ,big tires, and the valve train in order i bet you can get that heap up to 57 MPH:D
